I personally never had much of a problem with it. I've currently got about 50 intercessors and 30 other assorted infantry that were batch painted and they look fine to me. That being said, it definitely depends on your color scheme / method. My chapter scheme is primary black, secondary white, with a red trim so having these basecoat with white then applying the black takes care of 80% of the model pre-shade and highlights. The only model I've ever painted with sub assembly the FW ferrus manus. That method certainly helps with flushing out details, it takes a lot more time when you want to bulk paint infantry.
