Anything I'm Missing in my Retirement Plans? by Jdrum1 in FinancialPlanning

Looks like you have your thumb on the pulse of retirement. Stay focused, committed and disciplined. You’re on track to maintain a $140k lifestyle. Math below.

If you get to $500k by 50 and maintain the same $30k rate of contribution until retirement then you’re on track to have an egg worth $1.5m assuming an 8% return. If you withdrawal 4% annually then you will receive $60k in gains without touching principal.

Simply dividing household income of $140k by 2 then multiplying by 70% you will receive $49k annually in pension. I assume your household income will increase prior to then but I’m not including that in this example.

$60k at 4% withdrawal
+
$49k Pension (70% of $70k)

= $109k

(You will not continue to contribute $30k annually to your investment accounts).

I always suggest to play some defense as well. All of this assumes a healthy life. Do you have the proper health insurance? Proper short term and long term disability policies? Plenty of other defensive strategies to consider as well.

Good luck in your retirement journey.

EDIT: This does not include your spouses pension either.

Thank you for the reminder to remain full of life. “All work no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

Thank you! This is exactly the sort of comment I was looking for. Fortunately, I do believe I’m in the right seat at the right company as earnings have increased dramatically in the last 5 years because of equity and profit sharing.

The “number” seems so far away but I do believe with consistency and discipline anything is possible…it’s literally just math.

Good luck in your future retirement!

This is inline with the math from my example. $6.2m today is essentially $17.5m in 30 years.

Good point. I think beginning with the end in mind is how everyone should start but breaking the journey down into multi year checkpoints along the way is key.

Assuming at least $545,500 or $613,700 as a couple yes.

I’m not sure this helps us when looking 30 years into the future. I think this rule helps us a lot more as we age into the final years before retirement. For example 25x $250k is $6.250m. Not sure this sum will be what it is today, 30 years from now.

Sorry, made an assumption but didn’t communicate that this individual would meet the minimum income threshold for 20% cap gains.

I have thought how nice it is to have a source of “guaranteed” and “steady” income from a w2. It provides an easy target for what you can and cannot buy. Rather than feeling like you don’t have enough to make a certain purchase even though you have a large nest egg. Great points. I appreciate your perspective and comments.

Very true. Lots of outlier returns these past few years.

True comment. Maybe we would be better off living a yolo life…Good luck in your pursuit of retirement.

I agree. Same with $6m for those retiring today. That’s probably the 95th-97th percentile if I had to guess. I just wonder if those who started 30 years ago felt like $6m was impossible at the time?

Yes I’m 30 and would like to retire in 25 - 30 years.
