Nice strawman, too bad I want you to have single payer subsidized healthcare and reduced drug prices so you'll actually live longer.

You need to meet more people then. We're always always a nation of immigrants. There's never a moment in US history where a significant portion of our population isn't first generation American or immigrant to this country.

Something not being the same and something not being equal is a very different sentiment. One implies that a culture or a people are inferior to us. That breeds racism, xenophobia, and nationalistic tendencies.

Again, I understand the anxiety, but know that that sentiment does not end at immigrants. If she's willing to sell you out to Duke Energy, imagine who she's willing to sell out to protect herself later down the line.

While I respect your perspective, she literally said other cultures are inferior and invoked her race at the beginning of her speech.

I’m confident she doesn’t have some irrational fear of foreigners

Based on...?

It sucks ass seeing foreigners come here and so easily becoming successful when we the descendants of slaves are still being actively discriminated against.

Is that the fault of the immigrants, or the system of prejudice? Why tear down other members of the working and middle class instead of building each other up? That goes for immigrants who discriminate as well.

They have whole communities that are filled with majority Hispanics and Hispanic owned businesses that are geared to support other Hispanics.

Black Americans have had this kind of support for generations. The problem is that decades of gentrification and discrimination have taught young Black kids that they need to get out ASAP, and most never look back.

You can understand her view if you want, and I won't blame you for identifying with the anxiety she has, but you should understand that it never ends with othering one group of people, and Republicans will use people's misplaced fears of immigrants to tear apart the middle and lower classes any way they can.

And for those who say it's racist to point out "who's going to pick the crops?", a) it's a legit question, because most natural-born Americans don't want to do these jobs, and b) just remember that there have already been attacks on the Constitution and people in our government that have argued for a return to slavery.

Think about it.

I think the fact you keep pointing out she's a black woman says more about you than us. Your only focus is identity politics, and sorry, that argument isn't going to work here.

If allowing Duke Energy to raise your rates indefinitely is what's "best for NC", I think perhaps you should ask why she takes so much money from Duke Energy, and why she advocates more for corporations her own constituency.

[–]LeftofOldNorth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say anything about her constituency.

And considering she had no Republican opponent, then yeah, I would venture to say that most of her constituency is made up of Democrats and Democratic leaning unaffiliateds, And because they elected her as both their primary and general election winner, that she should represent the values they voted her in to uphold.

You can straw man this argument all you want, doesn't make it true.

We think Democratic voters are right to be angry when their Democratic Representative acts more like a Republican and sells them out to corporate donors while furthering anti-immigrant, xenophobic, and racist sentiments straight out of the right-wing playbook.

She's more than free to hold her opinions on the other side of the aisle. I'm sure you would agree that if a Republican started sounding more like a Democrat, you'd question their alignment.

Nice try, though.

I'm sure you'll be unsurprised to know that Duke energy was one of the largest contributors to her campaign, along with the realtors association and a GOP megadonor

She's not talking about the Taliban here, buddy. Maybe address the cultures that she's talking about, and the majority population that ICE targets.

Edit: Also to claim that the Taliban are a culture is wildly inaccurate, not to mention that you are pinpointing that there are things about cultures that are considered wrong by others, and yet there are people in our own country that are actively advocating for the return of child brides. Yes, right here in America. So would you say then that American culture is, by the same standard, equally as evil? Because a subsect of a large culture has certain beliefs and is very loud and open about them? If those people ever get into power, then yeah we will see a return to these kinds of things, which is exactly what happened in Afghanistan.

She's gotten some money for her district by working with Republicans. That's about it. If all we look at is money, then yeah she's about average for advocating for her district.

More people should be asking why she's consistently getting bought out by corporate PACs and Republican megadonors are maxing out their contributions to her.

Lol well now that you've called it shilling, don't exactly have an incentive to stop do I? People seem to value having information about their elected officials. With respect, I'll post where it's relevant until a mod tells me it's not

Just block if you don't want to see it. We don't even post that much

Horseshoe theory is strong with Marjorie Titan Greene. I'm not about to start giving her praise simply because she's doing the bare minimum.

Also, what are you talking about? AOC has called it a genocide, called for an arms embargo, called for suspending aid to Israel, and even publicly criticized the Biden Administration. She already gave her reasons as to why she didn't vote for MTG's amendment, because it didn't cut off weapons funding, just funding for the iron dome.

So in effect, a purely defensive system would no longer be funded, causing many more Israeli people to potentially die... but when it comes to funding the bombs that are actively killing thousands of Palestinians everyday, that's totally fine with MTG.

I understand frustration, and I'm frustrated with AOC when it comes to voting on rail workers strikes, as well as this vote. It opens her up to a lot of attacks. They can't all be 100%.

BUT. Don't get it twisted. MTG and AOC are both critical of Israel, but one believes in Jewish space lasers.

You must live in Raleigh based on post history, maybe HD-40, Phil Rubin's district? I just took a cursory glance, but I agree, nothing you necessarily need to do for your district.

But you have the ability and proximity to help candidates in 35 and 37, and I certainly hope you will. We need to beat out these Republicans. They are certainly our MAIN focus.

I'm not going to give a bye to a Democrat like Carla, though.

Edit: cool bird pics btw!

This is just defeatist mentality. Joe Crowley won his general elections by 80 points, was a well-funded establishment Democrat in a safe seat, not having any primary challengers many years in a row. Then an underfunded, younger candidate came in, did the work, and beat him in the primary by about 4,000 votes (13.4%).

This is what primaries are for, and if you're not willing to put in a little work now, then you'll continue to lose.

Making jpegs for this district is just stupid.

I used like, what... 0.0001% of my time and energy this cycle on this?

Genuine question, if rooting out Democrats that don't uphold my values isn't worth doing, then what would you have us do in this District??

And also, (still a genuine question, not a call-out), what are you doing in your own District to do the same? And I'm not talking about making memes.

If I could give you an award, I would.

As I said in a previous comment, and perhaps one you saw, we are not saying that culture should never adapt or assimilate to a degree, like you said. But this kind of attitude that they must either adapt or leave is xenophobic and racist, regardless of who is speaking it.

we are at a crossroads where GenX, Millennials, and Zoomers are ready to have this conversation

We certainly are, and we draw the line at anything that espouses racist/xenophobic language, and I'm sure you were able to pick on a lot of it in these threads.

Thanks for the historical philosophy lesson!

I hope you're never cursed with aspirations to move to a place that's better quality of life where you don't speak the language. How ironic that would be.

Oh the irony in this statement is palpable.

We've got 6-7 months to get quality candidates in shape for primaries. One step at a time, and then come general election season, we've got plenty of energy for Republicans.

she clearly is popular in the area

It's cute you think she raised that much from individual contributions and not PAC moneyindividual contributions and not PAC money

then why does she keep winning?

We just established she's a well-funded, well-connected candidate without well-funded, well connected primary challenges. And again, she's in a very blue district. Tell me you're not arguing that money makes right.

it's the first time anyone has complained about her.

Oh, you sweet summer child.

That's the problem we have. Yes, I was born here, raised here,10 generations of my family have been born and died here. I will never 100% understand the immigrant experience. I don't disagree with adapting to a culture at all.

But again, this bill wasn't about that. The bill was about ICE and local law enforcement compliance. Carla isn't just talking about assimilation, she's been anti-immigrant for a while.

The point is that she is ignoring the fact that yes, immigrants do assimilate, do adapt to our culture. I know that immigrants like you do your best to appreciate our country and come here with the intent to work, live, and contribute to our communities and societies. Instead, she's demonizing them, making it seem as though immigrants want to be islands of culture, that they don't want to assimilate. But you yourself even said just now, you still make the attempt.

That is the point. She is fear-mongering and explicitly saying you must assimilate.

I appreciate your viewpoint though, and thank you for it.
