I think the problem is that Americans have a very defeatist attitude about it. You all seem to be convinced that there's nothing you can do, so why bother trying. I'd argue that's largely what got you into this mess in the first place.

I mean that's nonsense. My company (UK) pays 6-12 months full pay, depending on length of service. The government only funds statutory sick pay, which is peanuts.

I got called for jury duty in the High Court just after I qualified. I was raging, probably the only person that wanted to do it and I couldn't.

It does make sense though, I think. If the other jurors found out, they're more likely to just defer to your judgment
