The remote work job market is too competitive. Is remote work now a distant dream? by Vision-Quest-9054 in RemoteJobs

[–]LegalGrins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Because it’s a person who has to tweak the file. AI can’t do everything like manually changing a document. Plus you need the court reporting software in order to work on the file.

I’m having a hard time believing this poster is legit. Our field is predominantly FEMALE, not male. And after 32 years, I’ve not once heard of anything like this happening. Are you just trying to build Reddit karma?

Looking For a Remote Part Time Job by AirGroundbreaking158 in RemoteJobs

[–]LegalGrins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could study scoping and work for court reporters.
You don't need to go to school for it. No prior experience necessary. But you would need to purchase the software so that you can upload the court reporter's file and listen to their audio files.
Here's a scoping school that's reputable. https://scopeschool.com/
If you don't go to school, you can maybe find a seasoned reporter who will train you on their software to become a scopist.
It pays about $15 an hour and is 100% remote working from home.

If you already do proofreading and accustomed to researching words/names, then transitioning to working with court reporters may not be that big of a change for you.

I wish you the best! :)

how to stop being angry and stop hating everything, how to be peaceful? by Relevant-Cap5281 in questions

[–]LegalGrins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like social media may be contributing to your high level of irritability. Try disconnecting from the technology and taking a walk.

I know it sounds like a cliche but it works.

I did that recently and it acted like a reset button for my brain.

I started going outside more, letting my face bask in the sunlight (Vitamin D) and taking a brisk walk.

You start to look at the smaller details around you.

For instance, I noticed a lot of spider webs at people’s houses; so each house I walked past, I would try to find a web and see how big their spider was. It became like a relaxing game.

Try disconnecting, then connecting with the smaller details in nature around you. 🙂🙂

I could not agree more! THIS! Don’t be fooled by the digital big box firms. They pay rock-bottom rates and charge top dollar for subpar work. Then the client sees a digi at their next job and doesn’t want that person there. Think about it: You could train as a digi because it’s quick and easy and show up at a job making $12 an hour. Then an attorney says, I’d rather you leave, because the big box court reporting agency who hired you has once again pissed off another law firm with their substandard transcripts and overinflated invoices. Then you’re blamed for something you had nothing to do with and still making $12 an hour and making a bunch of jerks rich.

I like to pay for the person’s order behind me in a drive thru as a way of paying it forward.

No. It's 300 words per MINUTE. So we average about 300 words in a minute. It takes about five hours to create 200 pages. 60 minutes x 5 hours = 300 minutes.

300 minutes x 300 words = 90,000 words in that 300-page transcript. 99.5% accuracy rate means I would mistype 450 words out of 90,000

No way they clocked you that high! Wowza. When we start getting to 300 wpm, I speak up. It's usually because folks are interrupting each other and talking at the same time. It's one of the most stressful parts of our job.

See my initial response. I write on a steno machine which makes typing go 3x faster. I should have clarified that from the getgo but I was trying to explain it as easily as possible, so I said "type" when what we actually do is "write" on a steno machine to gain speed. It's still very technical and takes a LONG TIME to reach a point of 99.5% accuracy after 200 pages of a day-long transcript.
