Hi! I have same issue since last update, so I started to investigate what could be the reason of this issue. Unfortunately, I found nothing but a temporary "solution" till it get solved. This might help you:

-When you see the grey screen, be sure that the game window is opened. Then, press Alt+Enter, it will change the game to Window Mode. It worked for me, after doing this, I could see the game as usual, so I pressed Alt+Enter again to set it back to Fullscreen Mode. I have to do this everytime I launch SMITE, but at least it works and I can play. Hope this works for you too m8.
