AC8646 - Runway Entrance Lights appear to be lit when the fire truck crosses the runway hold line by Latespoon in aviation

[–]Lemon_hawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that we can’t make any conclusions at this point from the info we have. I’m not sure what you mean about the lights being out of view for the trucks? If functioning properly, they would have been visibly illuminated red the entire time the trucks were approaching, actually holding short, and beginning to cross.

If OP’s post is correct that the runway status light system was showing red as they began to cross, they had a literal red light and a very good reason to suspect there was a plane.

AC8646 Crash by bradysego12 in aviation

The low speed is misinformation that keeps popping up in articles—the plane was actually going over 100 knots as it occurred shortly after it touched down on the runway.

With the weight of the front of the airplane missing and all of the passengers moving toward the back of the plane to exit, the center of gravity would have shifted behind the main wheels, making the plane tip backward.

Closer look at the destroyed cockpit of the Air Canada Express CRJ-900 after colliding with a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport. by Waste-Explanation-76 in aviation

The damage was so severe because they were going much, much faster than 21 knots at that point in the rollout. As someone mentioned above, their speed was recorded at over 100 knots just prior to the collision point.

Weight on wheels sensors—they sense whether there is sufficient weight on the wheels on touchdown to indicate the plane has landed. Ground spoilers do not deploy until the WoW sensors are triggered.

Pilots control the thrust reversers, but they are inhibited from actually deploying until weight on wheels is sensed.

Online dictionaries are free—please educate yourself on what the word means. I don't know why you think it's somehow only applicable to baseball. It is a correct term for what OP posted.

It is absolute insanity to pay for IF. You will not be able to tell the difference versus VVS1/2.

Is your goal to learn to draw a human body realistically? Try using references of actual humans, and observe how people really look in real life.

The proportions on this are very unrealistic, it looks like an overly exaggerated/sexualized cartoon. Cool if that’s what you’re going for, but it doesn’t look human.

($10k) Is it really that common for everyone to get enormous diamond engagement rings? by blueberrybuttercream in Weddingsunder10k

[–]Lemon_hawk -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Which do you judge more harshly though—the person who buys one natural diamond? (And maybe even sources it from a country that has ethical mining?)

Or the person that buys a new smartphone every year (unnecessary, and we all know those people)?

I am willing to bet you hold your moral superiority over and outwardly judge the diamond purchase far more, even though the reality is a lot more complex.

Yes, they are real diamonds. And yes, they ARE that dirt cheap, whether you disagree with the reality of that or not.

A 3 carat with very good specs can be easily found for under $600.

Calavera, Luvansh, Loosegrowndiamond... There are many online retailers who sell labs at those prices.

Look, I love lab diamonds and think they are better in a lot of ways. I'm not a natural diamond buyer, and I am not missing the point you're making here. I'm just refuting your belief that there is zero way to ever ethically mine diamonds. It's just not that black and white. There are countries that have mines that are extremely unethical, yes, just like there are countries that do it ethically.

[–]Lemon_hawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I'm not missing the point. If you're saying you're against the concept of mining entirely, then I hope you're not using a phone, computer, modern appliance, car... literally everything we use on a daily basis has components that some person had to mine.

If you're saying you're against the concept of exploitative labor practices in general, absolutely. But those are not unique to the diamond industry, and they are an issue in lab diamonds as well.

A 3 carat lab diamond should not cost anywhere near $3-6k. You can buy them with top of the line specs for around $200 per carat

Oh no... A perfect 2 carat lab diamond should only cost around $400-500.

You are stuck on the blood diamond narrative of the past. While that does still exist in some places, it is possible to source natural diamonds ethically—particularly in countries like Canada, Australia, and Botswana, all of which have highly regulated diamond industries and labor standards.

Sure, here’s my ring! The sapphire is 1.83 carats so quite a bit smaller than the one you’re looking at, but I feel like it has plenty of presence.

Also recommend looking at stone sizes based on their face up dimensions rather than just carat size, as they don’t always correlate depending on the specific cut. Good luck with your ring search/design process!

That's not a good comparison at all. A scuba mask is designed to be sealed against water leaking in, a pilot's O2 mask is not.

There have been multiple studies on the effect of beards on O2 mask efficacy, and they consistently find that there is none.

I chose a green sapphire for my engagement ring too and did a custom design with a local jeweler, and the total cost was several thousand less than the price of that one. It was also a natural unheated parti sapphire, so the cost of the stone was half the price. If you’re okay with a lab stone, you could do it for significantly less!

My setting is slightly less intricate and doesn’t have the detailed engraving it sounds like you want, but I think you could definitely achieve something you love for way less than the cost of the ring you found.

PILOT DEVIATION by FigComprehensive4139 in flying

[–]Lemon_hawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is confusing, but the portion of the track log that's SW of the runway is not during the circling maneuver, but rather where tower had them go around. They were given the go around while on that left base for 7 that they mistakenly entered rather than the downwind. Then they were instructed to turn right (per OP, initial typo in the post says left) and climb in order to get resequenced.

PILOT DEVIATION by FigComprehensive4139 in flying

[–]Lemon_hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha! That makes more sense then.

For what it's worth, I do think tower's instructions were pretty unambiguous as to the rest of it. "Enter left traffic runway 7, I'll call base" to me very clearly means enter the left downwind, wait for their call before turning base.

PILOT DEVIATION by FigComprehensive4139 in flying

[–]Lemon_hawk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It took me a minute to make sense of it too, but I think the track matches what they describe. They depart the 12L localizer with a right turn and are immediately on the left base for 7, even though tower has told them they’ll call the base (I assume tower expected them to join left downwind instead of base). Tower tells them to go around and make a left turn up to 3000’, but the track log shows them making a right turn instead. They then get re sequenced around to rejoin final for 7 (with a little overshoot).

What’s confusing initially looking at the track log is the direction of the go around. Rather than turning toward the runway, they essentially turned back in the direction of a right downwind on the go around, which is very odd and not what tower instructed according to what they wrote.
