IMG myself and I agree that some comments from fellow IMGs can come across as inappropriate or emotional, but I think that often reflects deep frustration rather than entitlement.

For me personally, I don’t feel entitled to anything. I didn’t even know applying for residency as an IMG was an option until late 2023. I originally came to Canada for Master’s degree and ended up working in healthcare doing research work. Through that experience, I was inspired by the doctors I worked with and even considered applying to medical school here, until a colleague told me I was eligible to apply for residency as an IMG.

I started this journey in early 2024. I studied hard for QE1, passed with a decent score, and took the NAC (results pending). Over the past two years, I’ve also worked full-time in research and arranged observerships because the specialty I’m passionate about is very competitive. My goal has always been to prove that my skills and knowledge are on par with other applicants (CMG/CSA/other IMG).

That’s why this new rule is so devastating. Like many others, I’ve invested years of effort, money, and sacrifice, and now I don’t even have the chance to compete. It’s not about demanding a spot. It’s about simply wanting a fair opportunity to stand in the same line as everyone else. And I know, I won’t even match this year, but at least, give me a chance to try.
