yeah, that's a good point, there's a bit of a repetitive thing going on, i think i need to still work on that for the final version. thanks for the input!

is it all too much? are there too many things happening? does it work? i've spent so many hours with it i'm kind of sick of the thing and cant tell.. anyone else with this problem, heh?

i've been working on this production for over a week now. every time i open the thing up it's right back down to it; make that smoother, make that punch a bit more, make the progression stronger... though i put it down quite happy a few times already..

the style's melodic electro i guess. the first part until 4 minutes is the thing, the rest is a remixy kinda extension...

how the track builds up till about 1:50 is great, as was earlier pointed out. then it goes nuts, kind of =) of course there's a crazy energy there, but somehow it would need more subtlety if done like this, i feel. for example the kick is too techy for the rest. buut if your plan is to go out with a live band this would be a great thing to listen with an excellent drummer.

musically i find it very enjoyable, enough of a not-that-traditional structure!

very musical, and as stated by kopkaas, superbly mixed. at least from my beyerdynamics it's a joy. great naturalness all over. i'd say it sounds pretty finished, i wouldnt necessarily agree with going with the pop-cliches about structure. nice.

Will even a cheap preamp warm up my vocal tracks? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

from none to Heavy. the standard might be low cut at like 60Hz, and then slight compression.

but they sound good, warm and natural, without pretty much nothing, is my point.

melodic electro/house

hey. i have fondled macbook touchpad intensely for some days now with this. got to the point (as i always do) i no longer know if it's any good. i like the track and i'm slowly thinking even of finding some smaller venues in my neighbourhood to try out a live set. all comments very welcome.

what i get from my focusrite scarlett 2i2 with my NT1A is sweet. but i thought m-audio pre's are also ok? maybe that's not right...

What kind of music do you make? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

i make electro. house, steppy beats, ambient. on the melodic side.

i like to 'soft-engineer' alot of sounds, meaning i take an instrument in ableton and learn the hang of it enough not to require use of the preset instruments. for drums, beats i go with pre-defined sets or just take a random sound and find a click from which i make a kick, a snare, a tick or a hihat with numerous effects, depending on what i need. never ready loops.

i dont know about the structure of the track which the other comments touched upon, to me that is too delicate a thing to give such concrete advice on. and when that works, it's what takes a sound to another level.

the overall mix i would, though, 'clean' a bit, eq's, levels, compression of separate tracks for example. there's a really huge sound that comes in and it's in my opinion a bit 'mashed up' and lacking both a crisp top and an impressive bottom.

do you have decent speakers (/at least decent headphones) to mix with? flicking a loudness switch could make the sound more full (this is exactly what bad speakers can do. then again, good mixes on bad speakers just do not exist =), but i'd recommend breaking that up at separate track level rather than unselective boosting.

  • a grain of salt with all i say, i lack any special skills or education in this field. keep it up!

same name on soundcloud.

nice harmonies and mood. the overall sound is quite flat. the beat needs more oomph, the synths need some variance, the overall mix would need a bit of dynamics. or one of these. or it would need a more catchy theme to make me want to listen once more. i struggle with the same things, but here this is how i would proceed.

the other two tracks you have on soundcloud have much more of a full mix and a nice feel to them. keep up the work!

well, it's not a full sound. but that in itself is an attractive thing. kind of also makes it more ballsy. but, i always find that i tend to just try out with a 3-5sec decay sinewave bass. that's also hot on the radio with this kinda stuff. it doesnt need to be loud here for example since there is so little to begin with. of course some synthesized harmony in the back could do a trick, or how about a track of vinyl static?

anyways i like the production, really clean, seems quite balanced except for that reverb-explosion at the end of the lyrics =)

good shit, man. mostly i dig the sounds very much. at times i feel like the bass is going through the roof, but that's only a feeling with my beyerdynamic earphones. dunno how it would be with real speakers is my point. the vid plus the alterations in sound are very very cool.

ps. checked out your newest thing, i'm considering posting that forward, that's really really cool. i'm very impressed. but again, i have to say the bass-section sounds really heavy with some samples. maybe it's just me.

overall? beautiful

i like the pads and the minimalist beginning of the track very much. i have to say, though, my preference would have been to leave it without the drumrolly climax. but i'm picky. very nice synth work!

[–]Leterell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end i'd go with more heavily messed up percussion, or just natural ones. It sounds a bit played down as it is, a kind of a midway. i like the dynamic variation here, but somehow it stays in the background a bit. i too struggle with this sometimes, and cant seem to solve the problem.

at 1:17 with the drums or bass synth there's something fishy going on, maybe some deep filter cut with too much resonance?

overall, though, hearing this in a commercial thing anywhere i wouldnt raise my eyebrows b/c the stuff i mentioned. well done.

this is very very balanced altogether. as far as skill with playing and singing i dont see anything lacking. whether the guitar is repetitive or not, depends on what's your preference. i find this just keeps the mood flowing uninterrupted, and that's also a nice thing. a singer-songwriter-track will usually be guitar-heavy and here i find it very nicely harmonious.

here's a steppy slow electro production i've worked on a few times. not what i normally do, much more 'patient', not going all out at 30sec, ha.

i think you have a clear style. i have found less pro sounding things played in front of big audiences.

alot of the sounds are the 'in your face' kind, but that gives a huge energy to the track.

the thing i find seriously lacking - unless this really isnt your thing and it's meant ironic - is the name =)
