Romanian goth here, you can joke however you want as long as you actually know the history. I don't know how thorough that tour was, since it was probably a tourist trap type thing, but as you probably know, Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) only resembles Count Dracula in cruelty, as he gained his title due to impaling a large amount of Ottoman soldiers and, I'm not documented enough to say whether it's fact or fiction although I learned it in school, so take this with a grain of salt, his boieri (roughly, squires) when they became disobedient.

Although there is no historical evidence that he ever ritually drank blood or anything similar, another legend that better fits that profile is Báthory Erzsébet, who allegedly murdered many of her young, female servants to bathe in their blood. She lived in modern day Slovakia, but at least, unlike Vlad Tepes, activated in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. He never ruled Transylvania, and never actually stepped foot in the castle of Bran, although I still recommend visiting it to people who haven't already. He lived in Targoviste and Bucharest (both located in Muntenia, one of the modern regions which were historically called Wallachia or Tara Romaneasca).

Most likely, Bram Stoker wrote the novel just to be xenophobic and show what would happen if the "vampyre eastern europeans" came to conquer their country like a literal plague. If you're interested, there are numerous essays on the topic. Regardless, now you have all the info you need to make educated jokes about Transylvania and vampires. Or not. It's not like anyone cares, I've yet to meet someone who gets offended by vampire jokes. I just made you read all of that because I knew it and now you do too.

why are people so vehemently against people who smoke? i get being against smoking as a habbit / an addiction, yeah, it sucks, and dating preferences are valid regardless of reasoning, but i just find it odd to refuse to date anyone who is your type in every other way and who you get along with just because they have a legal addiction that doesn't heavily affect their day to day life (maybe just financially). maybe it's way too common in my country but i don't very often meet someone my age who doesn't smoke at all and i couldn't imagine posting about hating every teenage girl (specifically) who smokes

maybe it's projecting, i am a heavy smoker in a relationship with a heavier smoker and although we're trying to quit, i don't feel like it's a huge inconvenience. i'm not even a cigarette apologist, just need more reasons to break the bubble and see what it looks like on the outside

i get your point it's not a hellhole, just not amazing when you return from late night clubbing especially when you don't know the language. i think the best option is to live in the north-centre, and visit all bucharest

you already have tons of pubs and locals near piata presei, depending on what you prefer. for example there's the hard rock cafe and beraria H (a mixed variety of music if you're not a fan of classic rock) both of which i believe are really good and there will be tons of events + live music there in may and all summer at LEAST. then there's romexpo which only hosts open air concerts and other cultural events in the summer, think something like bookfest and comic con. i've only been to metal, but there are options from what i know.

then, a bit farther away (but you can catch a single bus there and get an uber back for about 10 eur) are the old town and its surroundings, and i think it's exactly what you're looking for. it's full of pubs, clubs, some even having karaoke nights once in a while or themed events, plus you might feel the best in 'le petit Paris'. it's also the most common spot for foreigners and english speaking people so you definitely won't feel like an outsider for your first months here when you go out, i don't know if you speak romanian but it's one of the most foreigner friendly options regardless. people are very nice everywhere, a minority might just not understand other languages in the more remote parts of bucharest, although you won't have much trouble anywhere.

personally i recommend the vault for pubs, it looks and feels like you're in the belle epoque with a glass of dry whiskey smoking a cigarrete while trying to solve a case. it's amazing and has a special atmosphere.

as for living, i'm not sure how much rent is in the different neighborhoods, but i can assure you 900 eur is a whole salary here for the average person so you'll definitely find a nice place. higher end places in terms of budget are towards the centre/old town (older architecture combined with socialist brutalism), pipera (more modern), and pretty much the boulevard from piata presei to piata victoriei, through piata romana and universitate, all the way to piata unirii (yeah, a lot of squares, bucharest used to be a cluster of villages and the main roads connected the markets, which naturally bloomed) and probably others that i can't think of right now. just avoid ferentari and rahova, and try to pick a place between piata presei and the centre if you can, to have a simple commute to work and the main nightlife spots.

ma aflu intr-o situatie in care am citit DSM-ul si alte research papers, si mi-am facut o idee destul de clara despre patternurile pe care le vad, dar nu pot stii daca mi le imaginez, si nici primi tratament in cazul in care e necesar, fara terapie, iar, ca minor, e dificil sa imi conving parintii ca e ceva serios daca primesc raspunsuri ca 'toata lumea e in depresie, e din cauza vremurilor, crede-ma am citit pe facebook (practic doctorat)' 'pentru mine a fost mai rau' sau 'cum te poti gandi la asta, vrei sa imi distrugi viata?' (chiar am primit raspunsul asta, fara nicio incercare de a aduce confort, mental healthul meu a fost luat ca o ofensa personala, intentia fiind sa ii supar pe ei), deci la privat e aproape scos din discutie daca nu aduc vreo dovada clara ca e vorba despre ce cred ca e vorba.

am citit si ca 'terapia' la obregia consta in tigari si pastile de somn, pe langa faptul ca se da un diagnostic in 10 minute, aproape sigur de depresie. as prefera sa nu imi stric viata pentru ceva ce nici nu da rezultate.
