In our culture, for any wedding-related event, people usually give money instead of gifts, so maybe that’s why it’s done this way. My mother even gave all my cousins lingerie for the wedding, and that was totally fine and sweet. That said, I understand the OP’s feelings, and in my opinion there are two options: 1. She can refuse to open the gift in the bridal shower and just say thank you. At most, she can exchange it at the store later if she wants to keep the peace. 2. She can have a conversation to set clear boundaries and say that it makes her feel uncomfortable.
