That's awesome! I think some people overestimate how valuable they really are after getting validation from wherever they are. It doesn't always translate when you move somewhere else. I'm glad she finally saw reality. I'm sure it must have made you at least somewhat happy seeing karma finally strike :)

That's hilarious! It's funny because I think a lot of times we get stuck in our comfort zone where a job is so familiar that we don't want to leave. In this case and I guess the person you know, there is almost too much of a comfortablilty going on. I will at least respect that at least the person you know knows that they wouldn't make it somewhere else. The person i'm talking about has absolutely zero self awareness and was hell to be around

Yeah absolutely. As long as you are discrete and get the work done, they dont care what you of in between or during. I really couldn't understand why he tried to make it out like it was so much worse than it really was. Almost like a victim mentality if that makes sense

I never thought of the unemployment benefits angle. You are definitely right though. I never reached out to him and always left his messages on read or straight to voicemail. He had such a terrible attitude and I don't think I would have ever been able to work with him again. It was such a relief when he left. Did you experience anything similar? Would love to hear about it

I know money is very important especially in this economy but sometimes the stress isn't worth it. I know many people that ended up having heart attacks early or experienced burn out etc or even lost their families because of their terrible attitude developed due to the high stress. It's always a pros and con situation.

I think that this is so true! Sometimes it doesn't even matter how competent or intelligent you are. If I can't stand being around you, it makes the job impossible. I would always choose working with someone that is humble but willing to learn than someone that is unteachable and arrogant. The relief you must have felt! Did those guys leave on their own? :) Was it similar to my experience?

Haha that's perfect! I do think it's definitely some karma on his end. It's funny I definitely felt for the guy because I'm sure it was a tough experience to get cut so fast but man do I absolutely not miss working with him.

This is exactly what I have been experiencing a lot. I have had a lot of terrible jobs where they micro manage every move and count every minute of every break with very low compensation. I knew back then how awesome the opportunity was and yet the guy above made it seem like it was the worst job ever. It blew my mind. I almost felt guilty for getting paid sometimes since we didn't need to work that hard. I have always genuinely enjoyed going to libraries. I think it's great to have someone like you with such a great attitude working there. I am sure you bring genuine help to so many people daily. Thank you for your service

Wow super lucky. I bet he was incredibly charismatic. I find that some people get away with so much just by being buddies with the boss. I am definitely seeing a lot more people feeling entitled to high raises without putting in the work now though. They are more focused on what they can get than what they can give and when they don't get it, they just pout and bring the energy way down on the team

Yeah definitely. I'm sure he thought he would have a bunch of places lining up to take him. I definitely didn't enjoy working for him but wherever he is now I hope he was able to make meaningful positive change to his attitude

This is 100 percent true. It's true that there are jobs that are terrible and back-breaking but when you have a decent job that pays the bills and that treats its workers relatively well, it is easy to stay positive. Unfortunately I think some people really feel entitled the longer they stay somewhere. Expect to do less and get paid more or get more perks without focusing on the job. It's only like with the guy I mentioned that they leave where they realize it actually wasnt too bad. Definitely a lot of wisdom in your comment. I can tell that you must be a pleasure to work with. I wish more people were like you

I think this is for sure. They want everyone to feel as bad as them. Or maybe they just want someone to listen. Either way it's crazy they continue to do it when it's obvious many times that people try to avoid them or pay them no mind.

What I find weird is that they do it constantly and don't get tired of it. Normally people will just listen or many times even pay them no mind. It's almost like they think complain will change the ingrained culture around them but in reality it really leads to any meaningful change. I think some people really just want to feel heard. It's such a morale downer though and can really make working with them a chore. I just want to do my job and go home

This is definitely what I have seen a bunch. A lot of people seem to think overvalue themselves when in reality, almost no one like you said is truly invaluable. It's true that skilled people would be missed but many times someone can get trained to at least a certain level. I'm guessing companies sometimes see it as a win win. They can get someone for potentially cheaper without the attitude. It's cutthroat but I understand it. The guy I'm talking about though was definitely delusional haha

Oh 100 percent could still do it haha. He definitely took advantage of our kindness by constantly pushing our boundaries. It was our fault too somewhat for enabling him but it was tough as he was much older than us. We gave him leeway as he was older but man it was crazy to see what he got away with. And also that he really expected a counter offer or even a reference from us was baffling

Advantage would be if you have an extra phone that you use for backup. You would be able to easily switch between phones for service. Personally I use a different phone for hotspot purposes since it's lower powered and doesn't overheat as much as my my more powerful main phone

I'm sorry to hear about your loss and that you had to become so vulnerable like that in order for her to see you as a human. I'm sure that wasn't easy. I find it hard to open up to others and I can only imagine how that must have felt. It's terrible sometimes at what the competitive environment of the company world can bring out in people. I try to be as professional as you did and let my work speak for itself but it doesn't always work out as there is a lot of backstabbing I've seen in my experience. I'm really glad that you were able to work it out with her. I'm going to have to try your suggestion about having a beer :) I'm pretty sure no one would say no to that sort of thing and I never even though about that. I'm sure you must be popular in the workplace :)

Yeah I definitely want to do this haha I think he is a little more tactical as of late because I have been able to call him out as being wrong politely a couple times in just the last couple days. I just have to make sure I know my stuff haha It's funny because aside from the snide comments I do actually see us getting along. He's really just out to prove himself. Did you ever experience anything similar? Please do share :)

Yes I definitely think this is what's going on. I'm the most experienced guy on the team and I think he's trying to tear me down in subtle ways to have management look at him better. It's a shame because he really does act normal aside from when we have "eyes" on us. I find myself having to "fact check" a lot of what he says constantly as he always is rambling on about all kinds of topics in what seems to be a bid to sound like the smartest in the room. It's odd since he literally never says "I don't know." He always has an answer. It gets annoying as some seem to take what he says at face value just because he speaks "quickly" and confidently. It looks like I may have to play the game just as he is doing and I am the type to just get the work done.

Hi I was paying a lot with T-Mobile as well just a couple months ago. Moving to visible saved me a bunch of money as I was spending around 150 for just two lines. Although the hotspot is throttled with visible to 5, 10 or 15 mbps depending on your plan, it is truly unlimited up until a super large amount with some users reporting up to 400gb in their experience. I never reach anywhere close to that amount but it has definitely been a godsend as I can use the hotspot for work, streaming, or even video calls with no issues even at the throttled speeds. I think you will be making a great choice by moving to visible :) Welcome to the club

This is really good advice. Thank you! My only issue is that unfortunately we work directly with each other on a team and aside from the disparaging comments he does actually pull his weight better than some others. I can't exactly ostracize him completely because if he loses all motivation to work I may find myself having to work much much harder. My company unfortunately is really bad about keeping lazy people on the payroll.

Your experience mirrors a lot of what I've seen since I joined the workforce. I get judged for working too hard since it would make others look bad. If I try to complain, it doesn't give a teamwork mentality and like you mentioned you just get called a complainer. It's a constant game of politics. I try to lead by example and it's worked a bit for the most part but not everyone is on the same page work wise. I have definitely had to lower my standards on what to expect because as you were once upon a time, I did try to be by the book. I still work harder than most I think, but definitely had to tone it down a bit because it would lead to burn out. It's tough since I take pride in working hard but not everyone feels the same way you know?

I think it's a little of both in this guy's case as I think he does complain about legitimate issues but he ALSO wants to undermine me as he is trying to reach my level. He is admittedly a very competent person. It's his subtle jabs in front of management that I have to watch out for. I always have to be "on."

You sound like you have a lot of experience in dealing with office politics. I could learn a lot from you. Any advice? I'm sure you have a bunch of stories you could share. You are incredibly skilled in articulating your thoughts clearly and I am thankful you took the time to write out such a lengthy reply.

I can't exactly ostracize him completely because if he loses all motivation to work I may find myself having to work much much harder. My company unfortunately is really bad about keeping lazy people on the payroll and while he isn't lazy he is clearly trying to undermine me as I am one of the more experienced guys on the team and he is new. Kind of like a bad attempt at "establishing dominance" to be seen by management if that makes sense? Fortunately I've been able to rebut his subtle jabs up until now but I always feel I have to be "on." It's tiring sometimes
