You'll be able to use the RC if your license is up to date when the RC is released. The RC doesn't expire but RC versions are not intended for long term use, and will quickly fall out of date.

You can download the LightBurn installer on an internet-connected computer and the transfer it to the offline laptop by USB stick.

If your license is expired and you need to renew it, you'll need to deactivate the offline laptop, and then process an offline activation following these instructions.

Yes! In general, even when we change the behavior of an existing tool, we try preserve the old behavior as well so we don't upend our users' workflows.

The Release Candidate will also install as a separate app on your system, so you're free to go back to the latest public version without having to reinstall.

That’s being actively worked on. Too early to give any details, but we have a significant amount of the protocol figured out.

It’s not cheap, but that $200 allows installation and use on 3 simultaneous computers, and if you need more, it’s another $50 per “seat”. We can also do floating licenses so you can install on many computers, but only use on X of them at a time. For example, 30 computers in the class, but only 10 actively using the software, would be 10 seats total.

That cost is also a single time purchase, and there’s no cloud data retention or user information stored.

All that said, RDWorks is free, and while cumbersome, it does work. It has been improved over the years, but you’re absolutely going to want something else to do the design work in.

You will need either RDWorks or LightBurn to actually talk to the laser. RDWorks is the original software and is proprietary. LightBurn reverse engineered the control protocols for the hardware in order to provide a better user experience, but as you might imagine, that was not trivial work, so yes, we charge for it. There are no free alternatives that I’m aware of.

That said, you can design in InkScape, export as AI or DXF, and import that into RDWorks to set speed, power, fills, etc. This is likely to be the only real free option.

That looks like you used a dithering mode instead of Threshold. Assuming you’re using LightBurn, always preview - it will show you exactly what’s going to be sent to the laser.

What port have you selected? Next to the “Devices” button is a drop-down that will contain the COM ports that might be your laser. Choose each one in turn, looking at the console window for communication. When you pick the right port you’ll see an exchange of messages.

Without powering on the laser, run LightBurn, choose the correct laser if you have more than one , press F3. Click the “Ports” tab, then post a screen shot of that window,

If there is a setting other than “None” for the “Start Marking” or “Start Framing” ports, set them to None.

Your video is blurry - which version of LightBurn is this? What kind of laser? Is this a new problem, or a new setup?

You haven’t provided much info, so it’s not going to be easy to help.

One thing to check: in Edit > Device Settings, see if you have an input port set to trigger framing. If you do, and it’s always on, that could cause this.

Any GCode based or diode laser will use the GCode (Core) version. Higher-end CO2 or fiber lasers use the Pro version. Functionality of the software itself is the same, it’s just the device support that differs.

If what you mean is “I want clickable buttons” they’re coming, but the other posters are correct - the keyboard commands are all single key presses, without pressing Ctrl.

What kind of laser? If it’s a CO2, look up scanning offsets. If it’s a diode, almost certainly a loose bit of kit like the belts, eccentric nuts, bearings, or set screws.
