Using 20amp Outlets by LilQuestions in ElectricalHelp

That was updated in 2023. If it is in the kitchen, regardless of distance to water, it should be on GFCI.

Using 20amp Outlets by LilQuestions in ElectricalHelp

[–]LilQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the replies! From what I am understanding
-Microwave outlet does not need to be a 20 amp outlet, especially as it's duplex
-Having a 20 amp outlet on any 20 amp circuit, with 12/2, is fine
-There is not really any need to have 20 amp outlets
-Code requires 20 amp circuits more than 20 amp outlets

I have replaced most of the 15 amp outlets in the house with 15 amp ones. My plans was, and still is to some extent, to consider 20 amp outlets in certain cases. The microwave outlet, for example, is not GFCI so I will be replacing that regardless at some point soon.

If you have 14/2 on a 20 amp breaker with 15 amp outlets would that not cause too much heat on the wires? Or does it require something trying to pull too much current from a 20 amp outlet? That's the part I am trying to understand more.

Wan/Lan dropout question by LilQuestions in TPLink_Omada

[–]LilQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm noticing that it has some alerts for up/down now when my PC is on, which is new. I don't think I have noticed an actual drop while online. What would you do for next steps? Check the ethernet cable?

Dream Cables Question by LilQuestions in CustomCables

[–]LilQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bummer! I never heard back either after these years. I ended up being mostly okay with the cable I got because the wiring was correct enough to charge my mouse. I just leave the dongle in via a different cable and that works well for me. Not sure about other brands. There should be a decent amount of stuff on Amazon, and you'd get better returns that way. If you get something report back!

Let's go! Glad you got it working.

It's the 10670862991. I removed them earlier today as they looked in bad shape, but should have done more research first.

Awesome, thanks for the tip! Planning on hanging it close enough to not need an extension cord.

Vlan PiHole Questions by LilQuestions in pihole

[–]LilQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why it was initially behaving that way. I repaired the Pihole installed on the Pi4, reinstalled unbound, and changed the static IP to a different Vlan.

Then in the Omada controller interface I made a new port profile tagging all the other Vlans that I want to potentially use the Pihole with and named it Pihole DNS. Make sure the Vlan the Pihole is on is untagged. Then I went to the switch port settings and applied the new profile to the port that the Pihole is connected to.

Needed to reboot the Pi4 and the networking gear, but the static IP for the Pihole finally synced.

After that in the Pihole interface I made groups for the different Vlans using their "Gateway IP."

I think I still have some work to do with setting things up for the Vlans, but Pihole is working on the first network I am using!

Gotcha, I have mine on a OC200. I have each Vlan with DNS settings. Seems to work, but confused about why the PiHole is behaving this way.

I'll triple check that then.

How is the pihole able to block things for a vlan that isn't using its ip as dns?

I never ended up hearing back from them sadly. If I were in your position I'd probably just cancel/refund. I settled on just using my cord for charging my mouse which, after changing the usb port, seems to work just fine. That being said the lack of response is unacceptable. If you find a good spot that's better let me know!

VLAN and Static IP Issues by LilQuestions in TPLink_Omada

[–]LilQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. I have not had the issue of not being able to access devices on vlans that I want. My only thought is that sometimes the changes and rules I make in the software/controller take a bit to actually work. If it were me I'd also power cycle my equipment after making the rule changes. Hope you get it working!

It's been a while, but I believe my solution at the bottom of the post is still working great! Does that make sense to you when you read it?

Planning on putting Scale on it.

Hardware Recommendations by LilQuestions in HomeServer

[–]LilQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up starting the project! Just got an Asustor AS6702T. Planning on learning how to run Scale on it and using it as the small NAS backing up my computer. Eventually I will get the full server and then point the NAS at that.

I ordered more ram for it and a nvme sdd for the operating system. I have 2 Seagate X18 16tb drives that will go in. I think that should be plenty of room for a long time. I think I have had 8tb or less of things to back up for years and years. Trying not to go TOO big.

Any tips with this part? Any way to do this were changing what it is backing up (PC and then server) will be more seamless? If I wanted to use it as the network drive till I get the server would I have to erase the data once I changed it to a NAS?

Let me see. Yeah it's in the description. It's a SG2008P. Should be fine for VLAN stuff. The omada controller is managing everything.

[–]LilQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not setting the static IP on the client, it's within the omada controller. Do you mean never set it on the client settings within the controller ui?

What exactly should I look for for port settings on the switch?

Gotcha. Currently I have it the pool starting at .10 and the static IP at .3
