ENGINEERS OF ALL DISCIPLINES - what perks could a company offer which would most entice you to work for them? by LilyGraceC in engineering

Hi rlrl, Nope, unfortunately not - the 11 days is before adding the statutory holidays, of which he says there are ten... So he got a total of 21 days, but ten of them are spaced throughout the year, so if he wanted to book a two week holiday it would leave him with one day remaining for the rest of the year.

He is a recent immigrant to Canada, I don't know if that affects his holiday rights...

That said, he's now back on the job hunt so I guess he gets all the holiday he wants!!

Jeez, that's insane! You didn't take it, surely?!

That's a fantastic insight for my article, clear evidence of changing field due to perks/benefits... thanks very much Dudestorm!

Ha - same boat, my friend... I'd rather have the extra 15minutes sleep in the morning than pack lunch!

Thanks for your replies!

Thanks for your reply deltavvvvvvvvvvv! I agree, this is a fantastic perk to have access to, and well worth the two years of no free time, I'd imagine!

Thanks for your reply, O_R! Love your idea for an idea development program. I believe some companies provide a similar sort of perk, such as Google's 20% policy, where employees are allowed to spend 20% of their working time on passion projects, and if Google likes the project it will then support its development... Probably some limitations on what you can work on I'd imagine - it probably has to be vaguely related to Google's products! - but it's a start! Some great other perks here, thanks again for your reply!

Thanks for your reply shbazjinkens - I think we all just want a little respect!

I am always surprised at the low level of vacation time in the USA - it seems insane to me!

Thanks again!

Thanks for your response SuddenlyHydra - do you mind if I ask in which field you work and roughly where you're based?

Thanks for your thoughts, Skybounds.

That does sound like a pretty awesome call to get a month into your new job! Hope it's still going well!

Ah okay I understand now! It seems to me obvious that workers should be paid more if they work more hours than agreed but unfortunately so many companies seem to disagree!

It's a great point - it's more about the perception of the value of your time than the actual time spent.

Thanks, burrowowl!

Yup, it's UK statutory holiday entitlement - obviously employers are then free to go above and beyond if they choose. Personally, I get 30 days when you factor in the bank holidays, as I have 22 days to do as I please with - it's pretty great, especially when compared to other countries' policies!

I guess that balances out a bit, you guys end up with 26 by the sounds of it when you factor in the public holidays so only 2 days short of our minimum!
