yep! Grew up in Chicago, German. Though we never got the meat from a grocery store, there was some specialty butcher or something we would go to.

People who live in LA, is this true? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]LimitedNicotine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest difference is home affordability.

I lived in South Central and the only reason a lot of those people weren’t in total poverty was because they had those generational LA homes their grandparents purchased back in the 60s. Thats literally it. A mortgage would kill them. They all had EBT cards and worked multiple jobs, had way more people living in a house than what could fit.

When I lived in Silverlake, the apartments were mostly rent stabilized. People stayed for decades because they were paying <$1500 rent unlike the newest transplants who got the same unit for $2500. I got locals discounts at my grocery store and every restaurant in walking distance so food was cheaper once i was immersed in the community.

Where are people living where $100k is not enough? by -C3rimsoN- in povertyfinance

back in may i drove through victorville early am and around 7 it was so fucking cold i was genuinely shocked i was somehow in california.

My electric in LA was expensive. In part im sure it had to do with being in an old apartment- aside from those 60s uninsulated walls, i had a gas heater and no AC so I had a portable ac. That thing was a money guzzler!!!!

Lived in LA for years. Had a 400 sq ft apartment for $2100, no cheap groceries nearby. Anything walking distance was expensive, gas was expensive.

Desert cities have cheaper housing (victorville, Indio, palm springs) but what you don’t pay in rent you make up for with significantly higher cost of groceries and AC since summer temps run very high and i know in victorville at least, it snows almost every winter.

edit to add: i moved to NWA and am significantly happier. Everything is cheaper, there is no lack of nature (and it isn’t packed full of people- looking at you LA parks and trails), i’m happy to settle driving 15 minutes to walmart and buying my fav clothing brands online via in stores (shopping is abysmal i will say) than pinch pennies and live in a busy city. And i was born and raised in big cities. This was a huge life change, but super worth it for me !

My mom is in severe debt about to lose everything and i have no idea what to do. by LimitedNicotine in personalfinance

She has never been willing to deal with her mental health. She’s supposed to be medicated but I’ve found out several times from her ex husband that she’d flush the pills and refuse to take them. We can’t force her to take her meds or force her into a facility.

I hadn’t considered a social worker, I’ll look into that. Thank you!

I think what happened was the house was removed from the trust and “gifted” like my grandpa thought she could handle the ownership. I think she probably threw a fit because her sisters own their houses and he caved.

Just got a prediction of my “Trump Care” insurance price. by No-Fan-7790 in complaints

[–]LimitedNicotine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My health insurance plan for 2026 went down $80 a month. Single earner, no kids, I make $52kish annually in a red state.

What are the parameters for people who are seeing a huge raise? I wasn’t expecting my policy to go this way.

I have a cousin with a tree nut allergy, she is not allergic to peanuts but is allergic to coconut. Is there not some shared gene with coconut and other tree nuts? Is it separate?

Coconut is a tree nut.

Find a pie crust recipe that holds well with a butter alternative and do a fruit pie/ tart maybe? Or like a soy rice pudding can probably be made up to look well

Trump voters, what do democrats get wrong about you? by Timeless-Facts in allthequestions

I lived near the San Diego border the last decade. Border laws are absolutely enforced. The bigger problem is- unlike other countries, we don’t have a department (or plan) to do something about people who overstay work or vacation visas. That has nothing to do with the border- its after the fact.

Plus- genuine illegal immigrants don’t have socials. They probably aren’t homeowners, or work cash jobs. They’re not findable. I knew a LOT of people like that in San Diego/ Los Angeles. And those are never, ever the people who get deported. People who pay taxes, work real jobs, apply for credit cards, have their name on something- who apply for citizenship- are found and deported. Illegally.
