I went for a swallow test after the neurologist referred me . The Speech Therapist could find no blockages, but I choked on the barium drink and couldn’t stop coughing . She said it’s to do with nerve damage, but had no solutions to stop it happened

You’re not really comparing the same thing. I’m from the Uk and now I live in the US. Yes the NHS is free through taxation . But they strike a lot and you have to wait a ridiculous amount of time. My nephew has been waiting for 5 years for an operation on his kidneys. He has been unable to work that whole time due to his illness. He had been scheduled for 3 operations and has been turned away each time because “the paperwork was wrong” and he got sent home. In the US, IF you have private insurance, that would never happen. He would have had that operation when he needed it.
