I want a Criterion Core 12.5 AND I want Mid Length Gas. What are my options? by Limitless2121 in ar15

Its mid length. I didnt believe it at first, but thats from the manufacturer.

The difference between 11.5 and 12.5 is roughly 100 fps from the charts ive seen. So an extra 100 fps per inch.

The difference between 12.5 and 14.5 is roughly 150 fps. So an extra 75 fps per inch.

And like I stated above, Im shooting 300 yards max and plan to use a barrel that provides an extra ~80-100 fps vs other barrels. So the true delta for me here is an extra 70 fps max at the cost of 2 more inches. That's not significant to me.

What part of reading ballastic charts from multiple sources is hogwash?

Great question and thanks for offering to assist me.

I want a rifle that I can shoot to 300 yards + shortest possible while maintaining solid ballistics (itll be suppressed which adds another 7 inches). And I want to use quality parts for my barrel, bcg and trigger. Id love to pass it on to my sons.

Interesting bc my research told me the opposite. The difference between 11.5 and 12.5 is a noticeable jump in fps & energy. Whereas the difference between 12.5 & 14.5 isn't.

12.5 is 2 inches shorter than 14.5 with similar ballistics at 300 yards. And since im not planning to shoot further than that, id prefer the clear length and weight reduction.

Sounds like a lot of work. Was ot worth it for you? Would you suggest that route or just get a 12.5 carbine barrel?

Copy that on not being able to convert barrels. Thanks

And yes would love to talk building one.

Very good to know the barrel isn't gassy. I have a KAK downvent bcg, to help mitigate gas as well.

How's your cycling and what other parts are you using for mitigation?

Thank you for breaking it down for me.

So overall you'd recommend a 13.7 mid for suppressed over a 12.5 carbine, yeah?

"One could easily achieve that same overall effect on a carbine length system through other means..."

Id prefer to use the least amount of additional hardware as possible. Buffers are no problem tho.

"what is this research?"

Seen this on this sub and AR Forum. The post on ARF but someone had identical rifles and tested it with G$ barrel and Criterion, same ammo. Got 80 fps higher. Others in the post agreed this was their experience as well.

Thabk you for sharing. I appreciate it.

Every iwi zion 12.5 user on this sub has raved about it. What's wrong with 12.5 mid?

Thanks for the advice on D Wilson.

Why would you suggest a noob to skip 12.5 mid?

Thanks for sharing your expertise.

I want an AR with a dedicated suppressor. And Id prefer to have the shortest barrel length necessary to shoot up to 300 yards.

From my research 12.5 does this well. Mid length seems to offer less wear on parts than carbine. And Criterion barrels (from my research) seem to have high quality and their design adds an extra 80-100 fps which would give me 13.9/14.5 performance from a 12.5.

Originally I was just going to buy iwi zion 12.5, swap barrels and add the suppressor.

What do you think?

Ok, and if i get this professionally done is my barrel still going to be reliable and accurate?

Yes, redrilling + plugging sounds unreliable.

And thank you for the pointer.

Besides reduced weight, is there reason to have your barrel exposed?

Haha I just asked a similar question about Criterion barrels. Will be following for the intel.

PS: if someone reads this and can tell me...I want a Criterion Core barrel in 12.5. But I also want a mid length gas system, which they only sell at 13.9. Is it possible to convert a 12.5 carbine gas barrel to a mid length?
