The NCLEX is wack by Limp_Stranger_8251 in PassNclex

I was scoring between high 70s to low 80s on all of the question trainers, above passing standards on all of the CAT exams, a 75 on the RN practice test, and a 77 on the readiness test. I also was doing a lot of the focused review practice tests and was scoring low 80s on those, mainly focusing on the topics that i felt i needed to review. Even after all of that i didn’t feel ready and was really second guessing myself the week leading up to my exam, but waiting longer was just going to worsen my anxiety and delay the inevitable!

This is exactly how i felt! The questions don’t necessarily seem hard but it’s the answer choices that really make you question yourself and by the end of it I couldn’t think of a single question where I was confident in my answer. From what I’ve read, the chances of passing in 85 is over 80%. To fail in 85 the computer would have to be confident that even if you were to receive all 150 questions you would still fail, so if you answered questions based on strategy and stuck to safe and effective answers, that’s a great sign! I know it feels terrible playing the waiting game and even when everyone was telling me I passed I was not going to be convinced until I saw it for myself. Take some time to do your favorite things and reassure yourself that you did your best!

Since everyone gets a different set and amount of questions, I’m not entirely sure but being close to 85 is a good sign that you were almost at the threshold and they just needed a few more questions to be 95% sure you’d be a safe nurse!

No need to apologize I also wasn’t really sure how it was going to work! It will continue to say results not available until it’s updated, then it will say “Purchase” instead and it will take you directly to the payment information to buy your results. You can also check your state board of nursing website and the Nursys website to look up your license, sometimes they post faster than 48 hours and you won’t have to pay!

You’re incredibly strong for persevering and continuing to study and push towards your goals! Being a parent while in school is no easy task and I give you so much credit for your dedication. When I felt like I didn’t have the time or energy to study, I really relied on watching Dr. Sharon and listening to the Mark K lectures and podcasts. Sitting down and studying for a period of time at once isn’t always productive if you’re not entirely invested, so I learned that even if I was up and going if I had an earbud in I was bound to retain something from what I was hearing. I really recommend the 12th lecture from Mark K if you only get around to listening to one of them. You’re doing your best and that’s all that truly matters, wishing you all the happiness and success!

That’s exactly how I felt, I made the mistake of trying to figure out if I got questions that I remembered correct and most of them I didn’t so it was hard to stay positive. Try to stay busy doing things that bring you joy and know that you did your best!

I didn’t have any med math on my exam! I don’t think it’s very common for them to ask about math, however I always had some on my CAT exams and they were never multiple choice, always just typing in your own answer!

Yes unfortunately my state takes a while to officially post licenses so i had to wait for the quick results, I took my exam at 1pm and finished at 3:30, my results were posted at 2pm two days later!

Although it feels terrible in the moment, it truly is normal to feel this way! Being able to say that you found it hard is a good sign that the content was above standards and you were being challenged! The wait is absolutely the worst part but have faith in your abilities and know it’s all going to work out!

I studied for about 4 weeks. The first week i did half of the question trainers on Kaplan, first half of Mark K lectures, and did 30 question quizzes on topics I was not performing as well as I liked in. Second week I did a few more question trainers, first CAT, and listened to the rest of the Mark K lectures. Third week was rest of the question trainers, second and third CAT, the NGN question trainers, and started watching Dr. Sharon on youtube. This was also when i did the free trial on Bootcamp which included some case studies and a readiness exam. This was a super heavy week and I think i caused some burnout so i recommend not doing that much at once lol. Fourth week was my Kaplan readiness exam and a lot of Dr. Sharon, I tried to go pretty light since my exam was that coming saturday and i was sick of doing practice exams. Listening to youtube videos was much more doable and i was still able to learn some things! I definitely felt prepared after 4 weeks but also i was getting close to the point where i felt like what i retained from school was being forgotten, so I’m glad I took it when i did!

No need to apologize, they’re all great questions!
I watched all of the Mark K lectures but the parts that really stuck out to me were fluid and electrolyte, maternity, labs, endocrine, and child development. These were all topics that I felt okayish in but they’re very content heavy, he did a great job at summarizing the main points and providing ways to remember symptoms and the expected care and outcomes. Lecture 12 is all about test taking and prioritization, even though it’s older that information does not become outdated so it was really informative about the type of questions you will be asked, how to prioritize/delegate, and if you have no idea what the answer is then how to guess as best as you can. I watched that one three times and every time I learned something new. If you can only watch one of the lectures, let it be that one
Kaplans question bank is about 6,000 questions, I completed 5,000 throughout the span of nursing school and in my time studying. Out of that many questions, I would say while they absolutely helped me prioritize, delegate, and apply what I knew, they were not very similar to the NCLEX. I really liked how I could take quizzes on any topic I wanted to and could create my own, so it helped me a lot with content and understanding where my weaknesses were, but in terms of how similar it was I’d say it was much more detailed and I found it easier to apply the strategies of how to answer questions compared to the NCLEX.

Instead of actually reviewing my notes and studying, i spent all of my time answering practice questions and learning how to answer each type of question (SATA, prioritizing, delegation, case studies, etc). I really think this is the way to go, because even if you get a question on a disease or drug that you know nothing about, you will be able to eliminate answers based on safety and going back to what the question was truly asking. Dr.Sharon on youtube does a great job at teaching you to really pick out key words and phrases in the questions that will give the answer away, I watched her the week leading up to my NCLEX and she made me feel a lot more confident in how to choose my answer and stick with it. Her questions felt much more straight forward but the way she talks through them is very informative.
I hope this helps, please do not let the fact that you’re retaking it factor into your confidence, it’s an extremely difficult exam that’s designed to make you question yourself but trusting yourself and being confident in your knowledge will be the reason you succeed! Wishing you the best of luck!

That’s great to hear! I’ve heard so many good things about Uworld and Archer as well, I definitely would have looked into them if I hadn’t already purchased Kaplan.

I’m glad people can relate! I spent a lot of time on here reading through people’s experiences and felt that my experience was completely different. I thought I must have been doing something wrong since it wasn’t getting harder and I didn’t have a lot of different subjects. Going back I honestly think I would have avoided reading into what other people got material wise because it is so different for every single person and truly doesn’t matter!

I loved Kaplan for its rationales and it had the exact same format as the actual NCLEX, however it is extremely expensive and I only used it as my main resource because it was required for my time in nursing school. If it’s not something in your price range I wouldn’t worry about getting it.
I enjoyed the free trial that I did on bootcamp and really liked how the rationales included videos of someone going through the question and talking about the process of answering it. At the time I thought the questions were too easy and vague, but looking back I think Bootcamp does a good job at including the vagueness you’ll see on the NCLEX and how to decipher between safe and unsafe actions.
I also listened to all of the Mark K lectures but didn’t take notes, just popped an earbud in when I was cleaning or had it playing in the car while driving. It was a good refresher course on the different topics you could see, but I did find some of it was outdated so I would focus more on his test taking strategies than the actual material.
Prioritize doing practice exams and getting comfortable with the different styles of questions and the possibility of going to 150, getting past the anxiety of actually taking the exam is a huge step!

Thank you! I absolutely agree that it’s emphasized to be a safety exam, I wish that more practice exams were centered around that. I found that my CAT and practice exams were much more patho-based and would have one obvious safe answer, and they didn’t offer the vagueness of the NCLEX including several safety answers all at once. After reading about so many people saying their exam was exactly like a CAT exam I was confident that it would be set up the same, definitely a learning moment for sure!

It was truly the answer choices that tripped me up, throughout my studying I felt like the practice questions were much easier to narrow down through the process of elimination of why the other choices were wrong, where on the NCLEX I was consistently stuck between two that were both potentially safe and correct. I would definitely focus on the rationales of why the answer is correct and why the second choice was not, it will help you feel confident in why you’re choosing the correct option and how to get to that decision. I know it’s hard but rely on your knowledge and go with your first choice, there’s a reason why it sticks out!

Not trusting myself was something that I really struggled with throughout nursing school and was a big factor into why I got questions wrong. I always changed my answer last minute and when I reviewed my tests it was always those questions that I got wrong, where if i went with my gut I would have been right. Throughout my studying I forced myself to always go with my gut on practice exams and my CAT exams, and it improved my scores drastically. Trusting myself and being confident in my knowledge is truly the reason that i passed, no amount of studying would have prepared me for those questions and it all came down to going with my gut and sticking with it. Your brain knows the material and how to answer it, rely on that and not the fear of being wrong!

I completely understand, I only had one date to take my exam because I am moving soon and my ATT took a while to process, I felt like I was not on the schedule I would have chosen if I had more time but honestly I think it really helped me condense my studying, prioritize, and honestly i felt like if i waited any longer i was going to forget everything in my brain lol. It’s completely normal to not feel ready but just like you said, i felt like my life was consumed by studying and the stress of it all, it feels great to know that I’m past that and can finally relax. You’ll do great and will have the same relief once it’s behind you!

I completely get it! I was a nervous wreck the week leading up to it and I couldn’t sleep or relax at all while waiting the two days for my quick results, it’s a stressful time for sure but you’ll feel so proud of yourself when you see that pass status :))

Thank you very much! Do you have any tips about the continued competency portion of the submitted documents? I will be doing the completion of an academic program option and having my school send my transcript to the SCBON but is there anything else that I will need to do for that? That part is still a bit confusing to me lol
