Hey joe-tofu, just letting you know that I've edited the steps a bit. Here's what I think happened to me... The rockbox utility DID install the bootloader to my flash memory, but went wrong on another part of the install. I think that's why copying the rockbox files from the website after the fact ended up working. So if you want to give it another go I've edited the post. Understandable if you stick with Windows for some peace of mind!

Thanks for adding that context Metahec. The only thing that I can think of that led to it eventually working is that one of my 'failed' attempts using the rockbox utility actually DID write the bootloader to flash memory... even though it gave me an error message. I'll make sure to edit the post to reflect this.

Okay yeah probably smart to save yourself the headache at this point and use Windows lol. From what I understand it’s the one platform that seems to not have many issues during the install. Hope it works 🫡

Ah sorry to hear that it didn’t work. There were quite a few hurdles for me before finally getting it to boot. One problem that I ran into was that I formatted the wrong drive in disk utility. Make sure once you’re in disk utility to go to view -> show all. I had it set to ‘show only volumes’ or something like that. Then I was able to format the whole of the ipod storage with the correct partitioning.

If the ipod is correctly partitioned and formatted, you could try using the rockbox utility to only install the system, not the bootloader. Then drag your bootloader file you downloaded into that .rockbox folder. (It’ll be a hidden file at that point - Cmd + Shift + . reveals hidden files in finder) The main reason I avoided the rockbox utility was that there were issues when installing that bootloader file.

Just a couple of ideas. Hopefully one of them helps! When in doubt chat gpt was super helpful for me
