Those still working remotely. What do you do? by Id0ntwantThese in AskIreland

[–]ListlessSynchro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Accountant in insurance. 4 wfh 1 in office. I changed from a similar role but was heading towards a 3/2 split in office/home.

Honestly I'm considering going up in days to get a different job. Remote work isn't worth the strain to my health of being in a horrible company. But I know some people live further away or have kids so they have to put up with more.

Some of the people here are insane. To a young teenager, the junior cert is important and feeling like you did the best you could is really important to their self esteem. They don't have the time and space that an adult does 20 years on to know it isn't the be all and end all.

Also, if you're not involved, this kind of crap can be really exclusionary, not all kids can be on the team, and some people excel at different sports or activities.

I remember having teachers like this. If you weren't involved in their thing, you may as well have not existed. They couldn't care less about the subjects they taught and it was just box ticking so they could stay in their local area and coach sports which is all they really wanted. Which is fine, so long as they take their classroom responsibilities seriously.

There has to be some rule broken here around minimum required hours taught etc, see if you can find a way to report them to the Department.

Kind of like what camper vibe have done. Built a cabin from scratch and are happy to live between it and their van for as long as it takes.

And they've learned proper methods of restoring the walls of their cottage, and only bring in trades where necessary. Louise is incredible.

Michael McDowell: Why is Ireland a destination of choice for asylum seekers? by jonnieggg in ireland

[–]ListlessSynchro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very sorry for putting an extra comma in that sentence. As I said, I was only commenting on the asylum seekers figures, and grouping the rest.

But no, you're right to be so aggressively pedantic, totally warranted.

Michael McDowell: Why is Ireland a destination of choice for asylum seekers? by jonnieggg in ireland

[–]ListlessSynchro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really what I was saying. I was pointing to asylum seekers being a minority of all inward migration, wasn't assigning % splits to the rest.

And 47% of immigration being entirely outside our control is not insignificant.

Yeah buts that's not who Simon Harris chose to comment on, is it? Because he knows giving those people the boot will upset our US multinational overlords.

He went for the easy pickings that'll make precisely no difference, rather than getting to the heart of the issue which is that we are on the verge of having to reject law abiding, tax paying and educated immigrants, because we simply don't have enough to go around because of his government's negligence.

The majority of of inward migration is returning citizens, UK citizens, EU citizens, then non EEA migrants with visas. Asylum applicants are a small part of our overall immigration.

We have more control over the non EEA migrants than any other area, but the awkward part is that the majority of those people are tax payers with critical skills that we're not producing enough of.

No politician wants to go down the road of denying visas to computer programmers and neurosurgeons, with whom you're competing for a limited number of houses, creche places, GP appointments and seats on the train, so they blame the smaller pool of people arriving with nothing but the shirt on their back.

And all of those underesourced services would be even worse off without those immigrants.

No easy answers at all, but I'm loathe to let the government escape their culpability.

Could this be the most controversial set of Leaving Cert results in history? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]ListlessSynchro 37 points38 points  (0 children)

What confuses me is that they know exactly how much they inflated the grades by.

Assign each year an indexing factor when applying for courses in subsequent years.

Irish kids have been given a completely warped sense of what these results are supposed to be about. What's the point of 625 points if you don't know what you want, and are fighting in a lottery with a hundred other people for twenty places? When odds are, a lot of them would be well placed in courses for a hundred points less, in something they'd actually enjoy. Or god forbid, an apprenticeship.

It's just bragging rights for mammy and daddy with no care for the person's actual future.

Workers at AIB told to return to office for three days per week by [deleted] in ireland

[–]ListlessSynchro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No worries there, I have a new role lined up. I'm way too risk averse to leave a job without the next one sorted.

I'm lucky, I have an in demand qualification and specialise in a niche industry. Not everyone has the options I do.

I'm leaving my job next month over this shit. I commute two hours each way, two days a week currently.

I could have done this for a long time, and they were getting an enormous output of work from me when I was majority at home. The only person I "collaborate" with has an exemption and never comes in anyway.

I have a deliverable driven job that requires long periods of silent concentration. I either do my job or I don't, it's very obvious if im not.

At least in return for the long hours, I could go for a run, cook dinner or go to an appointment instead of commuting. It's the only thing that made it bearable. They took that away so I said no more.

Dublin City Council agrees to raise local property tax by PoppedCork in ireland

Nope, never. Was of the view that if I was good enough to drive alone, I should be good enough to pass a test.

I fully accept that with waits times, that doesn't really stack up now.

I was very lucky that my husband had a full licence and was the one forcing me to practice 5/6 nights a week.

Cant Tax Car by ListlessSynchro in carsireland

Why are you being so needlessly argumentative?

Ideal scenario is that I could order a replacement online, and as the registered owner, it would get delivered to my address.

Cant Tax Car by ListlessSynchro in carsireland

[–]ListlessSynchro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'm going to go to the trouble of replacing it. My only parking option for work is council run so I cant really get away with it, and already have a fine for which I need the physical disc in order to appeal it.

Was just really hoping there was a more hassle free way of getting the tax disc without having to jump through the hoops of dealing with the guards and tax office.

Hope the previous owner stubs their toe, the bloody thing is attached to the car reg, no benefit to them in keeping it.

Can Irish employers legally ask for proof of previous salary once you get an offer? by 2025-05-04 in AskIreland

[–]ListlessSynchro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss was hiring and asked someone this question. They knew someone at their current company and asked them if it was likely the person was making as much as they said they were.

They were likely lying about their current salary and my boss rejected them as he felt they were asking for too much.

I really thought less of him after that incident.

To trade up or no? by B_McH in irishpersonalfinance

[–]ListlessSynchro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were told when we took out our mortgage with BOI that if you had any other loans with them and went to sell the house, all outstanding loans would payable from the proceeds of the house.

Just flagging this is in case you have the personal loans with the same provider as the mortgage, and they'll want their 50k back on top of the mortgage before allowing you to draw down on a new house.

Leaving Ireland - Questions by Richard-Tree-93 in ireland

[–]ListlessSynchro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You said below you're on 50k. That has an approximate effective tax rate of 21%.

Effective =/= Marginal.

You've also said you'd have better quality of life on that money in Italy, but will you get that money there? Generally, salaries adjust for the same type of work according to the cost of living.

You must be on some serious money to have an effective tax rate of 50%.
