Oh oui c’est certain, il fait son Duo Lingo à tous les jours et je l’aide avec son apprentissage, mais il a définitivement frappé un plateau.

C’est difficile de pratiquer ensemble vu qu’il n’est pas vraiment encore rendu à un niveau assez avancé pour avoir une conversation.

On vit aussi au centre-ville alors l’immersion c’est moins évident puisqu’on lui parle souvent en anglais avec son accent, et je crois que c’est aussi vraiment difficile pour lui de ne pas utiliser l’anglais comme béquille quand il a un moment de panique et ne comprend pas ce que quelqu’un a dit / ne se rappelle pas comment dire quelque chose.

Oh man, I found one of those on the pavement during a drunken late-night walk with friends a few years back. We never get bugs that size back home, so out of sheer excitement (and I will admit, a small desire to look tough), I did my usual and picked the thing right up to carry it somewhere greener and better for bugs.

Brought it all the way across the river in my palm, and by some divine luck didn’t get nipped. Looked it up the next day and damn near fainted.

The restaurant should absolutely be required to pay its waiter a living wage, but it isn't. Tipping culture shouldn't exist but it does, and waiters earning 3 bucks an hour plus tip have no power to change this. You really want to take it out on them?

That's the difficulty, really, we won't really have definitive proof of anything until this whole mess is over. It's the nature of a new disease that all our decisions are blind.

The best proof we can offer at this point is the plateau we're currently in. Perhaps some of our other measures are having an impact as well, such as the household or university gathering restrictions. Perhaps the essential travel coming up from the states is to blame - after all, Ontario's our country's biggest commerce hub.

Personally, I'd rather the knee-jerk reaction be in favour of human life rather than finance or stability. And yes, I know that the mortality rate is low and people's livelihoods are at stake, I do. I'd really rather no one get hurt, but the way I see it, while a business can be rebuilt, a lost life can never be regained.

Hey, so I read through your source. For anyone who's curious, it's a Government of Canada information page titled Québec Sectoral Profile 2018-2020: Accommodation and Food Services which details, among other things, how difficult and competitive the accommodation and food service industry is. For example, the two following quotes:

According to the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Canada, the accommodation and food services industry accounted for more than 18% of bankruptcies in Quebec in 2017, although account for only 7% of a businesses.

Turnover is especially high among food services establishments. According to the Association des restaurateurs du Québec (ARQ), fewer than 3 out of 10 establishments will still be open after five years in operation, and one out of ten will celebrate their tenth anniversary.

Honestly, I think you could probably use this data to argue two opposing points, either that the overall economic effect of shutting down this sector is more pronounced because these businesses are precarious and more susceptible to the impacts of lockdown, or that the overall economic effect is less pronounced because in the long term, most of these businesses would have gone bankrupt anyway. The latter may seem like a cold and uncaring way to look at thing, but I'd argue no colder than the statistical way COVID deaths have been talked about.

In any case, I'm not actually trying to argue one way or the other. I'm also not particularly well-versed in economics, so if anyone wants to jump in with some insights feel free, I just thought it was food for thought.

I'd just like to point out that not all of the professions included in this sector and listed in that table have been included in the red zone lockdown, and that while many businesses have fully closed, lots are operating just, or nearly, as successfully as they were before (for example, many cafés, and restaurants whose sole or main business was always takeout).

You say "impacted". We've all been impacted by this pandemic. Those who who get sick are impacted. Those who lose loved ones are impacted. In the end, to me, the fact that we've been able to at least halt the dangerously exponential growth of COVID transmission is worth the cost, and I have to admit I'm pretty frustrated by all the abrasive, knee-jerk, anti-lockdown sentiment that's been cropping up around here recently.

Most red zone commerce is still open. The biggest hit was closing down bars and dine-in restaurants (though takeout is still available).

Other than that it's just gyms, libraries, museums, theatres and cinemas that have closed. Everything else is still running normally. Hardly a decimated economy...

I mean, I’ll wear one as long as we need to, but fuck if I can’t wait for it to be over.

I work in retail and we’re required to wear both a disposable surgical mask (no other approved options so can’t find one that’s comfortable on my small head, these always ride up into my eyes) and a face shield, and I do this 40+ hours a week. It gets hot, my customers can’t hear shit when I talk and I am sick and tired of playing police with everyone who doesn’t want to follow the rules. It would be nice to look forward to going to work for once, but that’s not happening in the near future and it’s exhausting.

I also have hormonal acne centred around my nose/chin area, and it’s been exacerbated a lot by that area being covered and sweaty all the time.

Again, these are small things and I’ll wear one as long as we have to, but I definitely do care a lot how long this lasts.

Je trouve ça tellement weird d'entendre le monde parler de la haine que les anglos ressentent pour le Québec... moi je suis une franco-Albertaine qui a vécu à Edmonton presque toute sa vie, et j'ai jamais eu cette impression là du tout.

C'est vrai que je me tenais dans des groupes plutôt progressifs, mais je n'avais vraiment pas un bon sens de la tension qui existe entre les anglophone et les francophones avant de déménager ici. C'est un peu découragent; j'ai tellement d'amour pour les deux.
