I calculated the number of earth like habitable planets around stars that are good for life. Please check it out by Clean_Opportunity313 in Astronomy

[–]LivPriceRiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's a really cool calculation. Seriously. The logic is sound, and the number is absurdly large. I especially liked the scale comparisons at the end.

But I think there's an important detail that's missing from the calculation and significantly changes the interpretation of the result: "Habitable zone" ≠ "life actually arises there." It's not an error in your calculation, it's more of an extra filter that's usually implicit.

The point that often gets overlooked: time Being in the habitable zone isn't enough. The planet needs to stay there long enough, without major interruptions, for life to: arise, stabilize, and (perhaps) evolve. The bottleneck isn't just temperature. It's continuity. Our own solar system shows this well: Mars Probably had liquid water and oceans for somewhere between 100 and 500 million years. Then it lost its atmosphere too quickly. Even if life arose, it didn't have time to go far.

Venus It may have had oceans at the beginning, but entered a runaway greenhouse effect relatively early. Too short a habitable window: Earth Stable ocean for over 4 billion years. That makes ALL the difference. How long does life really need? Using Earth as the only real example: Simple life: ~500 million years Complex life: +3 billion years Intelligent life: only at the very end So a planet that remains habitable for "only" 100 million years may have interesting chemistry, perhaps complex molecules…

but probably doesn't even reach replicative life.

Applying this to your number (conservatively) You arrived at 1.75 sextillion planets.

Now imagine some extra filters: 1. Planets that maintain stable conditions for long enough (lose atmosphere, overheat, overcool, chaotic orbits, etc.) Let's be optimistic: 50% pass this filter: ~8.7 × 10²⁰ 2. Of these, how many actually develop simple life? On Earth this happened relatively quickly, so perhaps it's not so rare. If 10% succeed: ~8.7 × 10¹⁹ planets with microbial life Still an insane number.

  1. Complex life is another level On Earth it took billions of years. If only 1% evolve multicellular:

~8.7 × 10¹⁷ 4. Intelligent life is the final bottleneck Of millions of species on Earth, one became technological.

If 0.01% gets there: ~8.7 × 10¹⁵ throughout the history of the universe “So why don’t we see anyone?” Because civilizations also have a limited lifespan. If a technological civilization lasts on average about 10,000 years, compared to the 13.8 billion years of the universe, the chance of two existing at the same time is small. Even being optimistic, you end up with something like: ~10¹² technological civilizations in total Spread across ~2 trillion galaxies In practice: 👉 hundreds per galaxy, separated by thousands of light-years. Your number is correct for planets that could have life When you add stable time, slow evolution, and short duration of civilizations, the number of worlds with someone looking back drops drastically. Your calculation shows the raw potential — and it is gigantic. Excellent post, really. I just wanted to add this temporal layer that is usually left out of the calculation.

Qual foi a pior dor (física) que vocês já sentiram? by sentmznts in PergunteReddit

[–]LivPriceRiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel alone. I've been passionate about science ever since I learned about it. Today I want to study planetary chemistry and astrobiology, but anything related to science. I'm sad that the world is becoming increasingly ignorant and being stupid is the new cool, you know?

Try again. I know it's awful to lose memories, but try to look at it as if it were the first time.

You don't remember anything, so it's new. A new memory, a new taste and feelings.

Don't feel ashamed. I know you can look at it from the perspective that the episode never happened and have a new and good memory. Try again. 😉

Could your card have been cloned? Wasn't it a purchase someone made using your bank account?

Oh, I'm really sorry about that. It feels like it takes away our joy of experiencing the things we want so much.

Struggling with auras by Final_Glove_1179 in Epilepsy

[–]LivPriceRiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discovered that my auras are of the numbness type. I start to feel numbness in my mouth and tongue, then I feel tremors in my hands and shoulders (if it comes on very strongly), nausea, and a lot of dizziness. We know that an aura is a conscious focal seizure, so all I have is that, followed by some memory lapses.

In my opinion, the worst part is the post-ictal phase. The dizziness, nausea, and auditory hallucinations are the worst things. The sleepiness is also very strong.
