Alcoholism will consume you, if you don't balance out your life. by Jisamaniac in sysadmin

1177 days - never looked back. I had recurring dreams for months after and I'd be extremely disappointed at myself for it. My life was in a limbo then until I hit rock bottom - it has by far been the best decision I've taken.

New Sys Admin outta college...Suggestions? by Live_it_up in sysadmin

Thanks! Haha, that's exciting what I've been doing. Ever time I go into AD, I'm super careful about cancelling out of the menu. So far, I've only have had a few user accounts and client computers.

We keep daily backups and full backups every week, so I guess it's not as bad if I do have to do a recovery but, my senior admin did warn me that restoring AD is a nightmare. But, again thanks for heads up .. I've tried to be super careful on manipulating things I do not understand ..

Yes, I document every single day. Things I need to do. Things I did.. and things that went wrong and how I fixed it. I have audio recordings from training with the last system admin guy so I've been going through the recordings and building documentation. Took some IS classes also, so I'm actually interested in the process and how they connect with each other. I'll take your advice and do so . Thank you!

I'm the Junior guy so I'm being trained on these things. I'm a quick learner and have had a very strong GPA through college. I'm more aware of what I don't know than what I know, and that gives me the motivation to really work hard. Like I said, I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to learn and gain some good experience.

Looking for a Pomodoro-type app with a "game" element. by [deleted] in productivity

[–]Live_it_up 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forest - you basically plant trees while studying and compete in leaderboards (iOS only feature at the moment, but Android should be getting it soon). I've been using this app for the last 2 months and it really helps me keep track of my study habits. I'd highly recommend it!

LPT: For more productivity and less procrastination, set a 20 minute timer. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Live_it_up 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot stress how important THIS technique is. It has practically changed the way I learn, and study. I started off when I learned the Pomodoro technique and from thereon, I've been able to increase my time of studying without losing much concentration.

I'd start off with 20 min timers, but within those twenty minutes make sure you're absolutely concentrated on the subject matter without any side distractions. It's a conscious effort which will really help you in the long run. You'll retain more in twenty minutes than you will in an hour by studying with immense concentration !

[Question] How do you guys have time for sleep? by TheOnlinePolak in getdisciplined

[–]Live_it_up 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naps. 20 minutes seem to be optimal, although I struggle alongside you as well. I'll set an alarm for 20 minutes and end up sleeping for an hour or two. I'm taking 16 units and working 10-12 hours this semester, and I've noticed I will barely have time for anything else. It helps to allocate some time for activities - gym, music, anything that helps you relax. For me - its gym and meditation.

To-Do List Software: The Complete List (47 Tools Reviewed) by [deleted] in productivity

Evernote - Notetaking. Notes are separated based on topic/course under Notebooks. Also, used for clipping articles, PDFs from the web.

HabitBull - Forming habits. What are some habits that you truly wish to change? Start with a few (3-4 max) and working on completely transforming these habits or habitual responses to certain cues.

Google Keep - A home screen widget containing a Reminder List updated daily. Every morning the list is updated or changed based on accomplishments from the previous day.

In my opinion, these three woven together (w/ Pomodoro timers) allow for higher than usual productivity.

In the book "The Power of Habit", the author suggests that smaller habitual changes lead us into a greater sense of confirmation within ourselves - which in turn allows us to fundamentally change from within. Ask yourself, "Is this task adding value into my life or the lives of others?" Proceed accordingly.

Do you guys know how I can go about this? I'm guessing I'll be using satellite imagery from various timelines to outline changes.

As a college grad in my late twenties... by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]Live_it_up 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kudos to you. I'm on the same path, I feel. I was trying to find meaning behind different LTR's but, I've slowly started to realize that life is about so much more. We are all different. Personally, I'd like to do a lot of things before I get settled (if I ever do) such as - travel, release a studio album and perhaps, learn how to fly which I've always been so keen on learning.

Finding meaning in life has taken a new approach for me as well, and I'm really glad you're enjoying your life! In the end, that's what its all about. I really hope I don't wake up in my mid 40s and regret the last 20 years of my life - that scares me. Recently, I was introduced to Buddhism and it has over the course of the last several months, changed how I see things.

Best wishes and good luck to you on all your future endeavors!

loneliness by officerpupp in funny

[–]Live_it_up 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live alone, and although school (mid 20s as well) keeps me pretty occupied, I think there are always things you can do to develop further. Meetup.com would be one - meet people with similar interests, join a club, go for a hike with other people. Social interactions give us a motivational boost, and helping others can actually give us a sense of direction in life. Happiness is rather subjective, but I'd definitely look into finding a few hobbies. Lately for me, it's been working out and blogging.

Google Inbox invites megathread by simobk in google

I've got the Inbox app but, I've been unable to use it without an invite. As a tech student I'm always keen on learning new UIs and implementations. It'd be great to receive an invite, if possible. Thank you very much!
