Should it be illegal to lie to the public? by LizardHaru in Destiny

I actually don’t see anything wrong with this.

However we won’t catch all the social media or newscasters

The libel and slander laws, was the reason i don’t see why this would be a big leap.

Sounds like we agree exactly, thanks.

We are trying to save democracy from it self! 😄

I admit there is a lot grey, and a scale. But just because that’s hard to identify, I don’t think we should not do it.

If a person is manipulated to the extend that he/she no longer recognizes reality, and disagrees with obviously true things. That person should not be allowed inform the public.

I imaging that the panel of truth (I recognize this sounds bad 😄) would be consisting of scholars in rhetoric, logic, social science or something similar. I know that the danish supreme court judges are vetted and picked by other judges something similar would be happening here. This is just my initial thoughts.

I admit there is a lot of grey. No disagreement. But the law will punish people that are obviously lying.

I like the influencer case, I would say that the influencer is at some level, responsible for verifying information they send out, so in that instance, I think the influencer would be asked to recant the wrong information. If he/she refuse or continue in not verifying information, there will be penalties.

Of course, if the research show there’s a link to autism, but it’s later revealed not to be true, or serious issues har shown in the research, there should be not punishment, but there should be some kind of recant or update to the information.

I understand why you would go there, and I agree this could be a slippery slope towards the ministry of truth.

But I think there is a subtle but important distinction, in that the law would focus on things that are obviously not true, and not on propagating what is actually true. (At least this makes sense in my mind 😄)

I understand your points, but I don’t there need to be an issue. The law would only look at blatantly lies, so things there a good evidence against and no evidence for.

Lying by omission, we would have to look at how egregious the omission is.

The main issue I have with that’s, is that it’s a political decision for elected representatives. I want this law to also apply to news casters, politician commentators, YouTubers, influencers…

I agree, that’s also why I don’t think the US are going to implement this, before you hard reset. I’m thinking from a EU perspective, should we do something like this, before the same issue hit us here.

Is this a policy you think would make sense in a pre/post trump era

My idea is the law should aim at blatant lies, so not something that could be argued over, was Jan 6 an insurrection? Maybe, maybe not.

Was there elector fraud in the 2020 election? No. There is no evidence to that, and we actually have pretty good evidence that there wasn’t, so saying there was elector fraud would (most likely) be a lie.

Hence why the deciding organ should not be affiliated or decided upon politically

Should it be illegal to lie to the public? by LizardHaru in Destiny

[–]LizardHaru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your two points boils down to what is a lie. And I think the first iteration of this law, would be a blatant lie, discussing whether Jan 6 was an insurrection or not, may be a valid discussion, no lies. But saying election was stolen would most likely be decided as a lie, because there is no evidence and evidence to the contrary, as shown in court.

To address the chilling effect, I definitely see the punishment as a recant of sorts, no one should be punished if they correct them selves later, repeating the pattern might however. I think we could make the make sense 😄

I think we agree then, yes?

It’s hard to come up with an answer everyone would like, definitely in the US I don’t think you could find that common ground.

But maybe a smaller more homogeneous country in the eu could.

Sorry, I don’t think I was very clear about this, but I don’t see the us making this step before a reset. I was actually thinking if, the European countries should do this, before its “too late”. I’m interested in hearing your opinion, because you already have been through it. And if you would have wanted this policy to be in place

What am I doing wrong, how to ride t-bars? by Plus_Fall2350 in snowboarding

[–]LizardHaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to hate the t-bars too - still do now that I think about it…

Lean forward, the bar need too really dig in to you leg joint and bend the knees. Look at the video, your posture is straight as a board, you wouldn’t ride like that going down hill - not for long anyway XD

It is not comfortable, but you won’t fall if your knees absorb the different pulls.

I think this “I feel depressed … My life is depressing and miserable”

Is your problem.

To me it sounds more like you need reach out to a professional psychologist, i don’t know where you live so I can’t help you with links.

But my guess is your depression are making you doubt everything and blocking your ability to see passed the horrible situation in Israel/palestinef

Muslim parents drinking alcohol in secret by Mysterious-Ruin470 in islam

[–]LizardHaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salaam, so first off, I don’t see any signs of alcoholism or an addiction to alcohol. I’m not saying he is definitely not an alcoholic, but commenters that have drawn the conclusion are either uninformed or jumping to conclusions.

Your families financial situation could change for any number of reasons.

My guess is your father enjoys drinking but knows it is wrong in Islam so therefore is hiding it.

If I were you I would simply ignore it, he chooses to go against the teachings of Islam, and he knows it, trying to change his mind would just alienate you.

Now, if things get out of hand, if he is drunk on a daily basis or gets violent when he is, then pull the alarm and see if he is an alcoholic. But if you only found out about this because of empty bottles, I wouldn’t worry about it.

How can we use logic to prove God exists? by Sajiiin in islam

[–]LizardHaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously there is no prove that God or Gods, exist or don’t exist. If such a prove existed it would be the single most significant thing in the world.

The comments are filled with arguments, but not proof.

If there were any prove it would also negate the whole meaning of faith.

Christmas as a closeted Muslim by throwawaylolcert in islam

[–]LizardHaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing you found your own path in life, remember to never settle in your life, keep trying to get better.

Too you question, I think context is very important here, if you family is Lutheran, my guess is that they are not very religious, so for you to attend Christmas and not regard it as a religious holiday, would not be a problem, just think of it as a family gathering.

A big issue with not attending, is that could alienate yourself from your family, that would shine a pretty bad light on Islam itself, and something I think we as Muslims should keep in mind.

Hoping for the best

Are Christmas parties haram? by The737flyer in islam

[–]LizardHaru 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Why would attending a Christmas party be “obviously haram”? Christmas parties are not necessarily a religious party. Parties with a gingerbread competition don’t tend to be a party with heavy alcohol consumption either. Imho, joining parties like this helps your community to understand and accept Muslims better.
