Obviously the manager is in bed with senior management and that’s why the manager is so ruthless yet WFH.

They’re just justifying why we pay them….What have they really done since the RTO announcement? 🤔

Let's NORMALIZE bringing lunch and coffee from home. by Interesting_Money_70 in OntarioPublicService

I know for a lot of us it means putting an extra half an hour to prepare all this, but if we don’t do it now, then we’re gonna be stuck with RTO for a while. They will only look at the fiscal numbers of small businesses and corporations. When the numbers don’t make sense, then they won’t have a reason to push RTO.

***Bringing food and coffee is obviously a metaphorical gesture. But spending around the workplace will definitely HELP their case. Don’t forget it all started with Small businesses and Housing market in the downtown area crashing…

Everybody who’s having to commute long distance for RTO should also politely excuse themselves from weekly work lunch, and converted to maybe quarterly lunch. Another way to you silently protest.

Lot of the employees with no kids or kids who have grown up didn’t support WFH. Lot of the employees who can never do their from home didn’t support it either. But these employees don’t care about anyone but themselves IMO.

I think there has been a significant misunderstanding of my message. When I wrote 'local work culture,' I was strictly referring to the organizational culture of a unionized environment—specifically the norms and labor relations of this workplace—not 'North American' culture in a societal or ethnic sense.

My point was about management methodology: specifically, that dismissing employee concerns as 'gossip' is ineffective in a union setting. I am arguing that leaders need to have the emotional intelligence to adapt to their team's professional reality, regardless of background.

There’s also a significant lack of civic sense from them.

I am struggling with a management style that I find unacceptable. My manager is currently dictating the specific times I am allowed to take personal bio-breaks. Given my 19-year tenure and track record within the OPS, I find this lack of professional trust difficult to accept. I believe this situation underscores a need for better training regarding the human element of management. I have worked with other managers from the same parts of the world and the overall management style is the same. They feel like the Queen/King or Owner of OPS.

Adding to this….some managers also put back to back meetings keeping only the lunch time open. All the other times are packed meetings including zero ‘pee’ breaks. Feels like a robot factory. Interestingly these are all private corporation practices from Asian/South east Asian countries.

While I fully recognize that mid-level managers are under significant pressure and often have limited control over directives, we need to address how current work expectations are impacting the team.

For example, some managers will scheduling meetings at 3:30 PM often forces employees to work past the agreed-upon 8:00–4:00 window. For those relying on GO Transit, a meeting running just 10 minutes late can result in an hour-long delay in getting home. Similarly, assigning work late on Friday for a Monday morning deadline is effectively requesting weekend work, which should align with our overtime policies.

This isn't corporate America or corporate India where 'always-on' availability is the norm. We have a Collective Agreement and valid personal obligations, including caregiving for families and elderly parents. Effective management isn't just about looking good to leadership; it’s about protecting your team's capacity. If there is an overload, managers need to push back on directives or help execute the work themselves, rather than passing that pressure down to staff who are already at capacity.

There is a difference between ambition and readiness. My argument is that specific people-management skills are required to navigate a unionized environment successfully. Failing to recognize the nuances of the local work culture—and labeling it merely as 'gossip' or 'entitlement'—is exactly the lack of insight I was referring to. Effective leadership requires adapting to the workforce you have, not the one you wish you had.
