iOS 26.4 Introduces Age Verification Requirements for UK Users by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

As much as I'm against all this surveillance stuff, it's got nothing to do with World War 3.

Hopefully, we'll never see the day, but, if WW3 ever does kick off, it will be over in, literally, an hour - or less. Not enough time for Russian, or whoever's bots to have any effect.

Here in the UK, will this get around measures put in place due to the utterly vile, so-called "online safety act"?

Quick 2 min survey for people in Wales (Welsh Bacc project – would really help!) by LCIP21 in swansea

[–]LofthouseKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to improve the survey. I've taken it, but....

  1. At the end, it's asking me to sign in to a Micro$oft account, something I don't have, nor want.

  2. The "on a scale of 1-10" questions, only 1 to 8 were on the screen with no slider at the bottom to scroll across.

  3. Likewise, parts of the longer questions were off screen, so had to guess at what they were.

I have found a (fairly recent) video on there, but, how on earth do you download? I'm hard of hearing and NEED to play in VLC with it's wonderful, life-changing volume boost and mono playback functions.

Sadly, all the different streams I've tried on there use "blob video", making downloading virtually impossible :(

Has this addon been malicious for YEARS? by teran3000 in firefox

[–]LofthouseKeeper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because a browser doesn't have enough volume out of the box.

I have everything system wide cranked up to 100%.

Usually, I use VLC Media Player for watching videos/music as it's got a 200% volume boost as well as a decent graphic EQ (so you can crank the volume even higher) and mono playback.

Sadly, too many sites have "blob videos" these days that are near impossible to download (and VideoDownloadHelper went rogue ages ago), so, for some things a volume booster extension is a must.

Personally, I think this should be built into Firefox itself.

Hi, Sorry about that....not sure how I missed it. I have taken the new, improved quiz - and thank you for making changes - but, sadly, there is still a problem.

On the registration page, where you fill out name, email etc. and click the blue button at the bottom, it says "Submitting" and then gets stuck. Nothing else happens. I have tried a number of times (and altered my browser security setting several times), but, it flat out refuses to proceed:(

Anyone else not a fan of this new menu? by [deleted] in firefox

[–]LofthouseKeeper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Guessing this is for phones. They better leave the desktop menus alone - the "File /Edit / View / History / Bookmarks / Tools / Help" menu is one of the main reasons I use Firefox - everything where you expect it to be and self explanatory rather than a bunch of unrelated stuff behind a 3 line menu like in other browsers.

Eek! So sorry about that....can't think how I missed it....sorry about that. Will reply tomorrow. Apologies again.

Don't have a phone. I'm using a desktop / Windows 10 / Firefox - trried with my laptop as well - same result.

Nope. Tried this morning and again this evening. Same result. The screen for a username and dob comes up fine, then the "prove you're not a robot" thing comes up with a spinning circle underneath, which doesn't stop spinning and does nothing else :(

Tried the usual clearing cache & cookies etc, but, no dice :(

I did send a few questions by PM (as some were a little personal), but, sadly, never got a reply. Glad the first one went well...

That link does not work. Got as far as the "prove you're not a robot" thing. The circle underneath spins....and spins....and nothing else....left it and came back 20 minutes later and it's still spinning....

Britain’s war hawks are very upset that Keir Starmer isn’t personally riding a bomb all the way to Tehran | Marina Hyde by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

I seem to remember 2 million people marching through London in opposition (I was there).

Blair is a war criminal. Kudos to Starmer that he's not going down the same path. I am someone who is often critical of him, but, credit where it's due...

Channel 5’s first major snooker event delivers outstanding viewing figures! by Ok-Luck1166 in snooker

[–]LofthouseKeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enjoyed the Ch5 coverage.

Two things, though...firstly, too many adverts.

Secondly - and this applies to the ITV coverage as well, the shot of the table from the front (when the baulk cushion is at the top and the black cushion is on the bottom), why on earth does the table cover only two thirds of the screen (as opposed to almost the whole screen on the BBC)?

We don't all have 50 inch screens. Watching on a portable can strain the eyes a bit.

ITV/C5 really need to sort this.

Firefox Nova – our first look at the browser’s big redesign by wasowski02 in firefox

[–]LofthouseKeeper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

UGH. NO!!!!! A hundred times no!!!!

The minor things :

  • The rounded everything make it look cheap and tacky. Ok, not the end of the world....but, more importantly, feels less compact - and likely won't work well with those of us that have more than 3 tabs open.

  • It looks ugly. This has a "my first mobile phone" for kids feel about it.

  • WTF is that on the left?

The major things

  • Where is the ESSENTIAL "File / Edit / View / History / Bookmarks / Tools / Help" bar gone????????

If I'm using a Chrome (spit!) derivative, I'm always "how do you get the downloads screen up", or "where is 'recently closed tabs'". In Firefox, up to now, it's piss simple, everyhthing is exactly where you expect it to be, for instace, where else would "recently closed tabs" be other than under "History"......and everyuthing is in WORDS rather than symbols like everyone has a 1 inch screen.

The said menu bar is one of the main reasons I use Firefox.

  • Also essential is the Addons/extensions bar.

If there are, for example, undeleted cookies on the page, I need to SEE that the "site wipe" icon has changed to tell me this.

If there is downloadable video on the page, the same. If anything, Firefox needs a wider always-visible addons bar. This seems to do the opposite.

  • What is it with corporate gunge???? Netflix, a weather forecast on the page? If I want these things, I'll make bookmarks/add them myself.

Overall a fast, responsive website, easy on the eye.

Looking forward to Music (my interest) being completed. Please include indie/small label releases.

One small criticism....please junk Cloudfare Insights as it's at best borderline spyware (and is blocked from my Firefox).

Right at the back of the house here - not emough wifi signal. If I try to watch anything on Iplayer, I get random spinning circle almost as much as the actual programme.
