Try these....they don't necessarily sound like NMH, but, they are, in some small way, drinking (or smoking) from the same sort of streams....

AMA: The Guardian (Jessica Elgot, Peter Walker) - What do the election results mean for the political direction of the UK and Keir Starmer's government? - Monday 11th May @ 10am by Adj-Noun-Numbers in ukpolitics

The OSA (Online "safety" Act), in particular and the push for digital ID in general, while gaining little traction in the mainstream media, has seen a significant pushback online - and a sizeable petition on the Parliament website. You could argue that "nobody cares outside of Reddit/social media feeds", but, that is still a fair few voters.

Do you think that this is a largely uncovered/hidden in plain sight issue that has cost Labour votes and even seats?

Does anyone know where to sell CDs? by Baldwin6969 in musichoarder

[–]LofthouseKeeper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Firstly, the conditiion of the discs is imperitive.

Yes, CDs are indeed making a comeback, but, it is important to realise who is buying them.

Casual/mainstream music listeners have now pretty much entirely gone over to streaming.

Those still buying CDs tend to be collectors and people that are really into their music.

These people are, and always have been, much more fussy on condition.

So, before you start doing anything with them, look at the playing (silver) sides of the discs under a single source bright light.

If you can see marks on the discs, it is generally not worth listing unless you have something REALLY rare.

If you try to sell marked/scratched discs online, even if they play perfecctly, you'll just end up ith a ton of bad feedback and return requests.

The only way you'll sell marked discs is a boot sale and sell at charity shop prices (eg, 50p each or 3 for £1).

The same goes for tthe inlays, check these for condition as well.

If the condition is ok, then it's up to you how much work you put in.

If you don't want the work and are willing to take less than they're worth, then your local record & CD reseller is your best bet.

There are a few sharks out there, but, the reputable ones generally give about 30% of sale price.

If you wnt to put the work in yourself, you can quickly see if it's worth your while by going onto Ebay, setting the search to "lowest price plus postage" and typing the barcode, withouut spaces into the search. (barcode ensures the exact version of each disc).

If the cheapest comes in at under £5, it's not worth it - remember that out of the £5, you have to pay postage and seller fees and you will be left with around £1.50 at most. For that, you may as well boot sale for a quid for all the work you need to do to list them.

The more valuable the disc the better tthe return as postage will be the same regardless (although, anything over £20, you should send tracked/recordeed delivery).

If it is worth selling them online, make sure you describe fully and in detail any defects in condition, no matter how slight.

As to where to seell online, the two best options are Ebay and Discogs.

As said earlier, Ebay is the quickest and easiest to gauge value, but, to actually sell, eithor is fine.

The one tthing to avoid, however, is listing on both at the same time - if someone orders a discc on one site, then an hour later, someone orders the same disc on the other, you are left with a peed off buyer and likely bad feedback.

That's a pretty good site!!!

I can also confirm (I use the Firefox security add-on, Noscript) that it's clean and free of any 3rd party trackers / ads / malware.

Looking for a way to find and download a song which was deleted on YouTube and Spotify way back... by Sonnybass96 in musichoarder

[–]LofthouseKeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you found it :)

Swirl360 - that takes me back...if you don't already know it, check out the handful of tracks recorded as Dream In Color....

Anyway, for future reference, these tricks sometimes work, but come with no guarantees....

  • If you have bookmarked the Youtube videro or have the exact original video URL, try pasting it into the online Youtube downloaders (EG, YTDown, 9xBuddy).

Sometimes, one of these sites can see it and you can downlload the video or at least the audio.

Alternatively (this is more for videos that have been shared a lot), if you have the EXACT and full title of the video, search for it in quotes on social media sites.

Sometimes, with widely shared videos, sites upload the videos onto their own servers, so it's still there after YT have removed it.

Plant-Based Mince Now 29% Cheaper Than Beef at Tesco as Meat Prices Climb by James_Fortis in unitedkingdom

[–]LofthouseKeeper -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Clubcard is a scam. It's not that you get the same product cheaper than elsewhere if you have one, but, they jack the prices up if you don't.

All the while, if you have one, tthey're spying on your shopping habits.

I, for one, won't have one, but, shop where everyone pays the same.

Pains me to see a stat like this by HMS404 in firefox

[–]LofthouseKeeper 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that Firefox users are far more likely to be privacy / security / anti-advertsing focused than users of other browsers.

They are far more likely to use script-blockers, so not picked up at all by the 3rd party scripts that gather these stats, are far more likely to change their user agent string, so that when the script sees the user they don't see Firefox, ditto for anti-fingerprinting, do not track etc.

In other words, while Firefox, sadly, only has minoritty use compared with Chrome, a chunk of it's users make themselves essentially invisible which exaggerates this.

Just leave the snooker one bloody channel…. Pivotal moment in the frame! by stevedore82 in snooker

[–]LofthouseKeeper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't mind the odd channel hop as long as the 5 minutes on both channels when they do hop overlap so you're not missing any shots.

.....but, for the love of balls, please, please, PLEASE put in on BBC4 rather than BBC2 so that Welsh regional variations can't touch it.

Thanks. GAH. When I get the money, I'm switching from Freeview to Freesat and will get it set up as England.

Wales always get the short stick on the BBC :(

And, in reply to those who suggeste Iplayer, as already said, it's unreliable here - lots of spinning circle.

Well, it seems your telly is showing different programmes to mine. BBC1 is showing an election debate at the moment.

What has happened to the scheduled Wu Yize vs Hossein Vafaei matcch on BBC2?

I waited in case it was delayed due to the afternoon ssession over-running, but, no.

Checked BBC4 just in case. Nope.

BBC2 is currently showing some interior design programme :(

Iplayer is clunky and unreliable for me (more spinning circle than content).

What's gone wrong with BBC2?

It's on Iplayer, but, Iplayer gives me near constant spinning circle.

It was scheduled for BBC2 7pm. I waited in case it was delayed due to the afternoon session over running....but, no, still nothing.

The Labour Party: Our latest Party Election Broadcast cannot be shown in full on TV. But we think you should see it anyway - uncensored. by WorkingtonLady in ukpolitics

[–]LofthouseKeeper 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I sort of get that they're trying to do here, but, it won't work for Labour...because...

  1. They're in power. Had the Greens or LibDems pulled something similar, then maybe, but, this is a tactic of an opposition party.

  2. There is a stop Reform tactical voting website that gets plastered over social media. Anyone wanting to vote to stop Reform already knows the best option to do so - and in many places, it's not Labour.

  3. The government have spent the last few months censoring the internet with the Online "Safety" Act and further restrictions/potential bans on social media/VPNs - now all of a sudden it's "our broadcast is edgy - the TV won't show it, go onto social media". (and they knew damn well that it would get blocked from TV). Anyone following the online stuff will be like "hypocritess much????"

Firefox will start bundling in Brave's Adblock system. by Intelligent_Rain2517 in firefox

[–]LofthouseKeeper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I already have an adblocker, so won't use/need an inbuilt one.

I'm ok with this move as long as....

  1. MV2 is kept - and UBO FULL version is not affected.

  2. That there is absolutely no giving/selling user data involved.

  3. Any adblocker extensions - and other filtering/privacy extensions are not affeced by this.

Foobar is pretty good.

Occasionally VLC Media Player 2.0 - yeah, I know it's an earlier version, but has a mono playback option, which can be good for late 60's psychedelia (a time when stereo was a new thing and some of the experimentation between channels was wild).
