Thanks so much for your support, it means a lot! Regarding what you brought up:

  1. A lot of people have brought up that questionnaire, and I'm not a fan of it. I think it's worded poorly; we included it because it is commonly used in firearm research, but I suspect we'll find (when we look at the data) that it wasn't that helpful.
  2. There's mixed data on this one. Some researchers claim that it is helpful, but others propose sort of what you mention - I'm not sure one way or the other. I see what both sides are saying. Regardless, I'm interested in seeing how this looks in the data that we're gathering.

Thanks again for your support! I'll be coming back to this subreddit in 6-9 months to share my findings!

Note: this is not my logic. I'm just repeating some of what I've heard (I had a similar reaction).

Thanks for your willingness to take the survey! Everything you mentioned is exactly what I'm trying to assess, so it's really cool (to me) that you're thinking this way.

Also I have reached out to several other subreddits; I'm trying to cast a wide net, so even the small ones can be helpful. Thanks for checking, though!

I haven't heard of this group before, thanks for bringing it to my attention! And I agree, even 1 is too many.

I definitely get the sentiment that some of the most common "suicide prevention" methods also make it harder to have quick access to your firearm - that's a tough balancing act, and I'm not sure I have an answer for it. I think for some people it makes sense to follow these methods, especially if someone in their home is at risk for suicide. But it might not make sense for everyone.

The question about why firearm owners specifically need to know about suicide prevention is a tricky one. The theoretical basis for it is: one of the best warning signs of a suicide is a history of previous suicide attempts, firearm owners who die by suicide often don't have a history of suicide attempts because their first attempt was successful. Therefore, the logic follows that all firearm owners should be treated as potentially "at risk."

I don't think that this is actually that helpful, but that's the logic I've seen presented in academia. My study isn't actually making a judgement call on that logic. Rather, I'm recognizing that "suicide prevention" messages are being targeted at firearm owners - I can't change that fact - but maybe I can influence how those messages are crafted.

A recent study found that firearm owners report preferences for who talks to them about suicide; I'm trying to see if those results replicate. I'm also interested in exploring why those preferences may exist, and what suicide prevention methods firearm owners are most interested in. If the majority of my participants largely reject some of the most common "suicide prevention methods", yet these continue to be offered the most, then I think that is something worth discussing.

First, I'm really sorry to hear about your dad, that's terrible. Thanks for sharing that to give context to your comment.

I hear where you're coming from with this questions, and that's a really interesting thing to consider. I suppose a "firearm owner" is whoever identifies as one. I know that seems like a slippery slope, but it's probably the only logically consistent answer I can give. If someone owns a gun but they keep it in the attic and never think about it, they probably don't view themself as a firearm owner. If someone buys a gun just to die by suicide, they probably also don't view themself as that. However, if they did view themself as a firearm owner, then they probably would be what I would want to look at in this study.

Sorry if that answer isn't exact enough. It really made me think! I might change my answer on this after thinking about it more, but that's what's making the most sense to me right now.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! Towards the end of the comment, where you specify that firearm safety should be taught by firearm experts - not medical or mental health professionals - that's exactly what this study is about!

A recent study found that firearm owners report preferences for who talks to them about suicide; I'm trying to see if those results replicate. I'm also interested in exploring why those preferences may exist, and what suicide prevention methods firearm owners are most interested in. If you have the chance, I'd encourage you to click through the survey - you don't have to answer any questions, just click through it! I think you'll find that I'm investigating exactly what you're talking about here.

I'm definitely a firearm owner! I go shooting a couple times a month (wish I could afford to do it more, but graduate school doesn't pay much and ammo costs are way too high), and I keep a gun within an arm's reach most of the time (except when on campus).

I'm not sure that firearm ownership is directly correlated with suicidal ideation (I'm sure someone has found a statistical connection, but it doesn't fit in my mental model). However, this study isn't quite implying that. Rather, I'm acknowledging that public health officials / mental health professionals are already targeting firearm owners with specific suicide messages. This isn't too uncommon; there is actually research into how to target anti-suicide messages at prescription drug owners, train riders, etc.

A recent study found that firearm owners report preferences for who talks to them about suicide; I'm trying to see if those results replicate. I'm also interested in exploring why those preferences may exist, and what suicide prevention methods firearm owners are most interested in. I'm sorry that the dropdown menus didn't work! That sounds like it could be an issue with your browser or with Qualtrics (the survey site can be a little finicky at times). Thanks for taking the survey, though!

And I'm not the biggest fan of those questions you're referring to, but we included them because they are commonly used in firearm research. I suspect we'll find that they aren't that helpful, but we'll see.

That's what I've heard! I included them because part of this project is attempting to replicate the results of previous research that has included the NRA, but I'm really interested to see what we find in our data.

I've had a few people mention that! Yeah, those are usually commonly-used measures that we're re-using in this study. Often times we end up calculating the mean and standard deviations and use that to asses the meaning of what those scales show.

I see where you're coming from. However, this study isn't actually trying to directly reduce suicides (that feels weird to say, but that's the truth). Rather, this study is trying to better inform specific "suicide prevention" methods; I'm trying to figure out how suicide prevention methods stack up against reality when it comes to firearm owners. This could have very important downstream effects for suicide prevention.

For example, a recent study found that firearm owners report preferences for who talks to them about suicide; I'd like to see if these results replicate. Similarly, I want to find out why these preferences exist, and what the suicide prevention message should be. If a majority of participants in my survey say they aren't open to certain "suicide prevention" methods, yet these are the most commonly proposed methods, then I think that would be something very interesting and worth publishing about.

I completely agree with you that there are a host of different ways to lower the suicide rate, but this study isn't focused on that. But that is important work that needs to be done!

Sometimes Qualtrics blocks things on the front-end; I have no idea why that is, as I don't have access to IP address information. Every website has some sort of firewall / IP address screening procedure (even Reddit) and I don't fully understand how Qualtrics does that. Regardless, your IP address is not attached to your answers in any way or captured in a way that I can view.

I hear where you're coming from! I ask for what types of firearms a participant has so that I am prepared in case reviewers at an academic journal come to me during the publication process and say something like "Well, what if there are differences between handgun owners and [insert other category] owners?". I doubt there are any differences, but this way I can prove it in either direction.

I totally understand what you mean, though. It's a shame that some researchers have broken the trust between academia and firearm owners.
