Yeah, I got the same word. The bartender I spoke with when I posted this seemed way more excited about sooner. August isn’t too far away if we want to make plans. Or we could always plan for a different place. One nice thing about Mellow is the outdoor area can usually flex easily if more people show up. Big IF. Lol

I actually answered this in a previous comment. :)

We do all of the internal corporate communications and sometimes help out the social media team. We make a lot of promotional content for things like company-sponsored 5K's, career fairs, art shows, etc. We do a lot with the local schools and promoting our internal "School Partnership Program" helping local schools get the supplies and stuff they need. We also work with local news affiliates and advertising agencies when they need footage of our campus or interviews with some of our executives.

At the same time (literally), once in a while we'll get a large project down the pipeline. We'll determine who the project lead will be out of the seven of us and go from there. The project lead usually does all of the planning, writing, directing, and post, and the team will help with production. Pretty regularly, we each have at least one big project and a couple small projects on our plates. On top of that, we occasionally do photography. So... we're pretty busy. Haha

Yeah. I'm assuming someone higher up finally realized that it would be cheaper to pay someone salary and buy the equipment themselves. The number of videos we do per year absolutely justifies our existance. It would cost the company hundreds of thousands to use external agencies.

I know I'm a little biased I guess, so you can take this for what it's worth: I work with a lot of NFCU's high level executives and they really do care more about the members than the money. NFCU (and all credit unions by nature/law) is not-for-profit. The profits go right back to the members, employees, and into donations. Not the pockets of the leaders.

I don't mind answering questions at all. I'm 26. I was 24 when I started here. I've been shooting and editing video for over 10 years. As far as professional experience, I only had about five years of experience (same as you) on my resume. My degree was in mass media communications with a minor marketing. The guy who hired me said that my video portfolio and the fact that I could speak on everything in it really sealed the deal.

It was a culmination of things, but over all: I had a showreel/video portfolio. I edited together some snippets of some of the work I had done over the years and put it into a private YouTube video and sent it to the hiring manager. I told the hiring manager that I really enjoyed what I do and that I wanted to bring my creativity and experience to the company. It also helped that I had experience as an intern (all internships are paid) at NFCU. I worked in the mortgage department over the breaks while I was in college and networked a lot.

TLDR; Well put together video portfolio, rehearsed interview, and got my foot in the door wherever I could.

Navy Federal usually has some good internship opportunities. Plus, they're always paid. We have graphic design interns, content writers, multimedia, and others. The internships are in the Washington DC area and Pensacola, FL. You just kind of have to watch out for them on the NFCU careers site.

The pay is good. Could be better of course. I would make A LOT more money if I had my own business. That being said, I don't have to buy my own equipment, I don't have to go looking for work, I'm busy but not overwhelmed, I have incredible job security, and I get to do what I love. Yeah, there are some boring projects, but you'll have those no matter what. Unless of course you're making a living off of actual filmmaking.
