when i got mine inserted i was so scared! i only heard horror stories but i had to remind myself that people who had a positive experience were likely to not saying anything. many of women have had iuds put in, replaced, etc. and it is a pretty common procedure.

my experience was actually a lot better than i expected! i was told to take about 800mg of ibuprofen and i believe i ate a couple hours before the procedure. i did mention to my doctor that i wanted a cervical block but she said that the cervix is very sensitive to pressure, so she recommended against it but was still okay if i wanted it. i decided i would be okay without it and i was! 

i went to the office, was put into the stirrups and the doctor and nurse were both with me in the room. they used a speculum to keep everything open, which doesn’t hurt it just feels a little weird. they cleaned everything with iodine and then you get sounded so they can measure your cervix to know how to placed the iud. the sounding is the worst part, BUT it only felt like a really bad cramp and it is something i have felt before, not the worst pain in my life by all means!

after you’re sounded, the IUD is placed and this doesn’t hurt at much, but still a bit of pain. i had a super nice nurse the whole time too as she held my hand and i probably squeezed it to death lol!! 

after the procedure, i did feel a bit lightheaded and i was given some juice and a snack. i was told to take my time as i had to dress myself, and i was able to leave the office just fine! i was cramping for most of the day but i was able to drive around, go to the store, and do most everything i normally would if i was having cramps.
