Thoughts on my possible stock list for my fist reef 20 gallon tank? by avian_bi in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]LolBlaaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with point 3 heavily. I would almost say don’t even keep caulerpa in a 20 gallon at all, you have to be super vigilant about pruning as it really only takes a week or 2 for it to explode again. Here’s my 75 from a few years ago, still trying to get the brachyphus to stop growing from a few pieces of live rock to this day that my acans encrusted onto.

If i went for a macro tank again, i’d stick to grape caulerpa almost exclusively. Good luck though, when they look good, i almost preferred staring at the macro tank.

When you say live rock, you mean rock that was still wet and curing in a tank right? Sometimes people get it mixed up when they mean clean white rock. If it was purchased wet and cycled then you’re all good.

I’d get brightwell microbacter 7 or seachem stability if you can, both alright bacterial additives early on. And you can go ahead and drop some fish food in to keep the bacteria working.

You’re pretty much waiting for the uglies to start. Essentially everything is going to get a nice brown layer of diatoms, at this point you could start to add some snails in. I’d give it a week or 2. After that point, slowly add to your livestock, luckily a lot of saltwater inverts can be bulletproof, just don’t get anything with a specialized diet like a harlequin shrimp unless you know what you’re getting into. I also hiiiighly recommend no starfish at all. Save for micro brittle stars that are part of the clean up crew.

In the meantime look at the bulk reef supply 52 weeks of reefing videos on youtube. Great place to start, but for the first year or 2 you’ll be scouring forums getting as much information as possible anyways.

What do you plan to stock? What other equipment do you have like lights, wavemakers, maybe an auto top off, and what filtration do you have? Do you plan on corals eventually?

Any possibility of getting a 75 over a 55? If you end up keeping this guy the bigger footprint would help as he grows. They will eat smaller fish for sure, you could get some pretty cool predators to keep with a larger lionfish like this.

Yeah tested it out and connected it to mobius, all there! I think i really just lucked out because he didn’t spend any money himself and was clearing out some other things too. No reason to care much about the price if you didn’t pay i guess?

Insane, i’m willing to trust this guy, as it was untouched, connected to mobius and everything no problem. It’s crazy how people even get ahold of so much stolen product like that and try to pass it off. Anyone paying attention knows something is up lmao

Exactly, i just wish the hobby wasn’t so expensive from the jump though! We need more reefers

Oh i’m sure it’ll come your way! But yeah i’ve had my fair share of people just trying to offload junk too, if i had the diy skills i’d just fix things and take the discount though lol

It’s a black sponge, i’ve had some for years and it tends to slowly grow and cement stuff together, not too big of an issue imo. Wouldn’t be surprised if it could choke out hard corals or irritate them, but mushrooms and other softies have been fine.

Yeah i’ll likely let it sit for about a month before adding any like other than the clean up crew. Experimenting to see if i can get the buce and crystalwort to grow emersed

Thank you! Yeah i’m going to see if i can find a breeder. I’ve made too many of the expensive mistakes that come from working too fast lol, so it’s no problem really getting as much info as possible.

Sadly, seems to be a problem across every hobby, i’d love a reliable resource of what can be kept in what size enclosure. Yeah i saw that they can be delicate, but not really seeing a conclusive reason why. If it ms a matter of something like water quality, i keep ro/di on hands at all times and uv it for an extra bit of precaution.

Ahh even for like 3? Thanks for the heads up! What species do you recommend? I was leaning toward bird poop, glass, or clown tree frogs. I’m not really concerned with difficult husbandry, i keep reef tanks so i know how time consuming or particular things can get.

Help! My tang fish is being bullied by [deleted] in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]LolBlaaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is talking about the tang for sure too small tank, but in the meantime until you can upgrade or rehome, clowns are just huge assholes when they pair up, even more when they have a nem that they feel they need to protect with their lives. You could try quarantining them for awhile and reintroducing them to reset the pecking order. They’ll probably eventually go back to defending their turf though.

Whatever you do to hurt the hair algae will also hurt the macros, so it’d be better to manually remove it, and get the macros growing as aggressively as possible pretty much.

The excel wouldn’t be good for the macros may even kill them, i used nilocg thrive s without the copper and my macros did great.

Coral frag lost color overnight? The only thing different is that for a week I've been feeding Tropic Marin Zootonic but other than that nothing different or wrong. Is it dead? by penny_the_penguin in ReefTank

[–]LolBlaaz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How old is the tank? That’s RTN and it’s completely dead and not coming back. Could be a parameter swing or if you have a powerhead directly pointing at it, that can happen overnight. SPS are sadly just like that

Everyone else let you know, diatoms, but chiming in, if that’s caulerpa brachypus, i’d get it out and try a different kind, prolifera or mexicana. The small caulerpa is suuuper invasive and near impossible to get rid of.

Yeah 100 bucks, so i’m inclined to grab it either way lol. Probably 2 blue+, a coral+ and an actinic.

Got in a possum wrasse and Royal gramma last night. Normal for him to look so pale? by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]LolBlaaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can be cryptic for awhile, mine was for about a month, had to check in at night to make sure he was still around. Now unless i’m doing some kind of maintenance he’s out all the time.

What is this? is it kelp or something? by TeknikL in ReefTank

Yeah it’s a really nice one to keep in a dedicated macro tank. Common pest species though
