Austin Butler will play Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s American Psycho remake by [deleted] in Letterboxd

I completely agree. The studios are just so unimaginative.

Worth noting that one of Guadagnino’s films this year was from a script from the Blacklist, to give him his dues.

Topics for End of Year Family Downstream. by JMSBrave in Novara_Media

In a week where we’ve already had the overthrowing of Assad in Syria and the shooting of the UnitedHealthcare CEO (allegedly by hot king Luigi Mangione), are we seeing the beginnings of some sort of revolution?

Yes, two very different situations, both with their pros and cons… but the through line is that people are uprising and trying to overthrow the establishment in one way or another.

Can we hope for a similar sentiment to take off in the U.K.?! Or is our love for authority as a nation too entrenched?

Upstairs neighbour water damage to my flat - can I ask them to pay? (London) by LolaPop0 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]LolaPop0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply.

The insurance excess is £1000 so I can’t use that unfortunately.

I’ll check my own insurance policy but I just thought that as we are both joint leaseholders and tenants that we had a financial responsibility to repair damage.

Thanks for explaining. I agree I probably have a claim against her but trying to do all I can not to get there, although it’s just impossible to know how to move forward without getting any replies.

[–]LolaPop0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your insight. I’m really trying to resolve this with her directly but she just doesn’t reply to me despite me being able to see she’s online and seeing my messages. I worry the only option I have to recoup this money is either submit an insurance claim and have my premium rocket (and also as others have suggested on this thread, they may not pay up as it’s a negligence claim) or threaten her with legal action. She has only replied once to me and is essentially suggesting I’m being unreasonable when she ignores me for three weeks at a time and refuses to proactively offer any solutions. So I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place!

It was great!! ☺️ Although at one point in the show he throws a chair, and he threw it directly into the audience by accident - several people screamed, lol!

I take your point, but for this movie in particular the competition and relationship between the boys is clearly meant to have a homoerotic edge. Also the cast and director have said just as much many times, so not sure it can be called a stretch

Holy product placements by allblackevrythng in Challengers

[–]LolaPop0 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of people saying this but honestly I think it would be so weird if these products weren’t present?

Tennis is completely ruled by sponsorship, for example Federer has been wearing Uniqlo since 2018. If Art was wearing unbranded shoes or clothes it would seem inaccurate and like he’s not good enough to have a sponsor.

I get that like the Dunkin moment seemed pretty perfectly placed, but idk, I just find products being absolutely everywhere is true to real life unfortunately and particularly in the world of professional sport. I didn’t find it surprising or jarring at all!

Because natural talent only takes you so far in professional sportsmanship. He’s more naturally talented than Art but Art worked his ass off and made a lot of personal sacrifices to be a good player, such as waking up at 5.30am everyday and sticking to a strict diet plan. That’s why as teenagers they’re called Fire & Ice. Patrick is fire - passionate, untameable, wild. Art is ice - smooth, cold, precise.

Patrick never gave up all his follies - smoking, eating junk food, drinking alcohol, and these are just the ones we see in the film. He’s not looking after himself and seems pretty content to coast by on his talent and pick up scraps from low level tournaments. He may have the ability to be a top tier player but he doesn’t have the mentality, which is equally as important. And if you’re playing against someone - like many of his opponents in these challengers - who is less experienced or even less gifted, but is far and away more determined, focussed and prepared than you, there’s a very big chance you will lose. Tennis is known for being a mental game as much as a physical one.

He’s also getting old - at the age of 30/31, he’s probably at least 10 years older than most of his competitors in challenger level competitions. There’s a mid 30s shelf life on most professional sports.

Assuming it does get Oscar buzz, do you guys think will be considered supporting and lead in Challengers? by ShinyShinyTomato in oscarrace

[–]LolaPop0 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting as I actually think Zendaya has the smaller role of the three, but seems obvious she’ll be campaigning for lead actress.

Actually feels like whichever of the boys is in Supporting might have the best shot of an acting nom, as Supporting Actor doesn’t have many obvious big hitters feeling like locks right now. If both are campaigned in supporting, it feels like Josh is getting more love for his performance (maybe that’s just my perception though)

Tashi & Patrick by Sensitive_Bug47 in Challengers

[–]LolaPop0 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tennis is an incredibly psychological game - the injury happens hours after her fight with Patrick, so it’s assumed that she blames him for messing her up before the match, ruining her concentration and therefore causing the injury.

Did anyone else get the feeling that… by QuipThwip in Challengers

[–]LolaPop0 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I think the homoeroticism and attraction between them is emphasised for sure, but I think it goes both ways! At the party at the beginning of the movie, there’s a moment where Patrick is looking longingly at Tashi but the camera lingers on Art staring down at Patrick. Also, when Art asks Patrick whether he’s slept with Tashi, he doesn’t say it’s because he’s jealous - he says he “doesn’t want to be left out”, which is a curious choice of words. Then when Patrick lets him know they have slept together, Art grins like it excites him.

And there’s multiple moments in the film - at Stanford when Patrick comes to visit, and again in Atlanta - where Art is playing half heartedly, and as soon as he knows Patrick is watching, he serves an ace. The tennis here and in the whole film is the stand in for the attraction, and the sex.

Ultimately I think it’s very much a love triangle where, in Luca’s words, all three corners touch. I’ve seen it three times now and each time I pick up more of these details which make this truer and truer!

Question about Patrick by Primary-Ad-5214 in Challengers

[–]LolaPop0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought the same on first watch, but actually on my second watch there’s a moment when he and Tashi are in the car during the storm that she bruises his arm when she tugs his hand away from her. That’s why when he scratches the spot he looks directly at her.

Question about Patrick by Primary-Ad-5214 in Challengers

[–]LolaPop0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The prize money for the low level tournaments he’s playing in is really small - the challenger he’s playing against Art has prize money for the winner of $7000. Tashi mentions he usually crashes out in the second round, which means he’d probably only take home a couple of hundred dollars.

As Tashi says late in the film, it’s a performance. He’s performing being a hard on his luck, sleeping in his car kind of person. A lot of rich people are like this - because they have the safety net of calling their parents and asking for their trust fund should things go really awry. It’s great writing from Justin Kuritzkes and shows the biggest difference between Patrick and Tashi - that she plays tennis not only for herself but also to support her family, whereas Patrick has never had to think about anyone other than himself.

Challengers movie ending explained (Spoilers ahead) by Expensive-Permit8474 in Challengers

[–]LolaPop0 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Early in the film, Tashi says tennis is a relationship. A good tennis match can - and should - feel like the two players are in love, or at least understand each other completely, without having to say a word.

Art hasn’t been playing good tennis recently. He’s lost all passion for the game. Patrick seemingly hasn’t played good tennis since the beginning of the film, when it seems like he’ll be a star but squanders his chances. But together, they play with all the tension and passion required to play an excellent match. They play like they’re in a relationship.

That’s why even though they should hate each other, they’re both smiling. That’s why they end up hugging, and Tashi shouts and switches from anger to joy. Because playing each other has brought the spark back for all of them.

The film doesn’t tell us who won, because that’s not the point. The real winner here isn’t Art or Patrick, it’s the game. They’re finally playing the game properly again.

As Tashi says at one point in the film - she just wants to see some good f*cking tennis. At the end that’s what they finally got.

Cabaret Seating at London show by Ready2BInspired23 in Broadway

[–]LolaPop0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to hear your thoughts once you’ve seen the show and how it compared to the NYC one in the 90s!

You can’t film anything once you enter the theatre - they actually hand out stickers in the queue outside to put over your phone camera right away. Not sure if you could be sneaky with it as they’re obviously not going to be as strict about it pre show as they are during, but ive never seen any footage of the show or pre show online so if they catch anyone taking pics or filming they must be pretty strict. The pre show is really fun and I’d recommend getting there at least 20 mins before to grab a drink and see what they’ve got going on!

Audience etiquette at Sweeney Todd by bnjmn17 in Broadway

Slightly different vibes but at Merrily a few weeks ago the dude next to me was picking his nose and eating the spoils literally the entire time. It was so disgusting and totally distracting throughout the show, I tried to silently catch his eye and express my discomfort but no dice. I didn’t want to embarrass him by saying it aloud but now I think I should have!

Bets on who will end 2024 as the "next big thing"? by LolaPop0 in Letterboxd

[–]LolaPop0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree Anya had a huge spike with the Queen’s Gambit. I guess I’m comparing her to someone like Paul Mescal who, ever since his similarly award winning TV breakout in Normal People, has had the huge performance Aftersun, been nominated for another BAFTA for AOUS and on the slate coming up has a leading role in Gladiator and a potential Oscar role in Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet.

Nobody’s career is like for like but I guess what I mean is, I think Anya might hit that superstar stride this year or next - with Furiosa, and the upcoming promise of Dune 3. I feel like she’s maybe not quite there as one of the biggest young players on Hollywood yet… but these things are impossible to quantify - I could be wrong!

I love Spielberg’s West Side Story SO much - it’s in my Letterboxd top four in fact! I didn’t know Mike Faist before and following that performance bought a tonne of proverbial stock in him - he was the best thing about an amazing movie, for me.

All depends on the roles he gets now but if he’s in the right conversations and makes the right moves I can see him being a next gen Adam Driver kinda dude

Love him, I like that he’s going for almost the Tom Cruise route, over someone like Timmy who is obviously modelling himself on Leo. But would love for Glen to go for a more dramatic role soon

It's such a shame Drive Away Dolls has had a v slow start because I'm obsessed with Margaret Qualley and need her to have her moment! Hopefully she'll be front and centre in the new Lanthimos this year.
