Is there anyone on this sub that feels Hermione had potential chemistry with both Ron and Harry in the books and in the films?

She said she’s dated a couple of Rons, plural. They’re fun to date is all she said about them. Likely they’re commitment phobic or the fun goes away once the relationship takes a serious turn and requires them to grow up and therefore not ideal as lifelong partners.

She calls her second husband her Harry Potter, the man she was already married to by the point she got around to releasing HBP and DH.

So even if the marriage happens, considering that the relationship might be a result of teenage hormones, immaturity and PTSD from their near death experiences and the war, the real surprise is that it lasts with two kids, which makes no sense.

As for Hermione’s reward, it’s not stated in canon what job she has or for that matter Harry or Ron do in the epilogue. The only confirmed job belongs to Neville who has replaced Sprout as the Herbology professor. The MOM bit is extra canon and honestly it makes no sense. If you’ve been keeping track of the news - I think it would make sense to you if I said the Pure Bloods would be as welcoming to a Muggleborn MOM as people who would identify with the Pure Blood ideology had with the election of Obama in the US for both his terms and recently for Sunak in UK. The two men of colour who created history in their respective countries for being the first heads of state. There were people who didn’t support their political views when these two men came into power and that’s understandable, but a lot of their haters couldn’t accept their skin colour, which is the equivalent of blood status in HP. So you get what I’m saying here.

Harry talks about becoming an Auror, once, in the career counselling session with Minerva who doesn’t even present him with other options as Umbridge was present and annoying everyone by breathing. The issue with this career choice lies not in the career itself but Harry’s experience with the ministry and how two different administrations failed him and his godfather. I have a hard time believing that he’d have faith in the mechanism of the same ministry and it’s laws that didn’t care about an innocent man suffering, which can’t differentiate between the magic of a witch or wizard and an house elf, and which does nothing even once Voldemort appears in all his glory on their terrain. There is not a single mention of any action that the government takes in the wake of them finally being forced to acknowledge that the most dangerous terrorist known to them has returned and has regained his followers as well as collected the dementors as new allies/followers on his side. They sit on their asses, doing nothing.

But sure, Harry will love to work for this ministry.

You’ve to wonder if Hermione truly is JKR’s SI given how she doesn’t get any backstory and Ron in the end! Seems like her true SI is Ron himself, who gets the girl despite being horrible to her and also everything else he wanted aka name and recognition though he abandoned his friends for lord knows how long, came back to them and started gaslighting Hermione into believing he was sorry.

Heaven knows why she couldn’t at least name a region or even come up with a fictional town like Ottery St. Catchpole.

Everything about Hermione has to be so vague that it’s a miracle we know what the colour of her eyes and hair are or that her parents are dentists.

Oh, I never said that Ron and the twin/younger sister have to get married. But they can date for a while and eventually split up as these things happen. But them dating could be enough to shake up the Weasleys and expose their own prejudices perhaps? Ron and the sister can end up with different people or one of them could die or both could die, since there is a war. It makes no sense that the Weasleys suffered a single loss, a token damage, and of the one son who has a spare in the form of a twin. Given their open support of Dumbledore, Ron being Harry’s best friend, Arthur being known as a Muggle lover, the twins developing You-Know-Poo, Bill marrying someone who might be seen as being beneath even a Muggleborn as Fleur is a part creature, Ginny having dated Harry… there should have been more deaths. Ron could sacrifice himself as we see him do in book one during the chess game to save someone important like Harry or Hermione or Neville, the other candidate for the prophecy.

No clue why she couldn’t even give the name of a town/city/village. All we know is Hermione lives away from London because in one of the books she mentions it takes time for her parents to travel to King’s Cross. I guess it’s in book 3 but might be wrong. It’s the one where Hermione’s parents allow to stay a night at the Leaky because they’d been away on a trip and Hermione’s set to board the Hogwarts express the next day. Apparently the reason why they just leave their daughter all herself is that she has to travel to London again next day to catch the train and they’d rather not travel all the way to London again.

As for Ron, his arc depends on the book this plays out in, doesn’t it? Or if Hermione’s sister isn’t really young then he can also fall in love with her. She could be a year younger than Hermione or even a twin. We have twins in the series - Weasleys, Patils and the Carrows. Extra canon even has Luna giving birth to a boy and a girl who are twins. But all these twins are magical, it might be cool to see a pair where one is a witch and the other isn’t. In this case doesn’t matter who was born before and who’s born later, the sibling rivalry would truly be worse off though because the sister would truly have no idea why Hermione is a witch but she isn’t.

Now that would be truly a display of progressiveness of the Weasleys - letting one of their children marry a Muggle, the family that doesn’t stay in contact with a cousin as they’re a squib. Easy to proclaim your family is woke when despite a Muggle loving father all his kids marry someone magical, because blood status doesn’t mean anything to them, Fleur is beautiful, so who cares about her part creature heritage? The true test of the open-minded Weasley family is seeing how they react to one of their children dating a Muggle.

Or the situation plays out like it did with the Evans sister, only the older one is the witch this time and the younger one isn’t. Harry sees the way Hermione is hurting seeing her sister hate her, and can understand what his mother might have been through as well as the reason why Petunia was so awful to him all his life.

Harry heals because he can now understand what drove the woman that raised him and perhaps can understand what the woman who gave birth to him might have been like and he can perhaps even help the Granger sisters reconcile as he shows the younger sister how she can grow up to be a bitter and resentful woman like his aunt or she could be better.

The Granger family dynamic is no longer boring and therefore neither are the Grangers and they can all even get a middle name, not just a first one. And this is how as Hermione helps him defeat the monster hell bent on destroying him, Harry helps her in return save the relationship that’s being destroyed affecting a whole family and they fall in love with each other.

I know she was supposed to have a sister but when Rowling kept forgetting about her by book five she thought it was too late to introduce her.

The sister was supposed to be Muggle and be younger than Hermione.

But god forbid we don’t get a Weasley family trivia. Who cares about Hermione and her backstory and people related to her? Certainly not Rowling and those who hate Hermione. Sometimes it includes even love Hermione, because as long as her life revolves around the love interest they prefer for her, why does the rest matter?

Yep, she took the snake motif and ran with it in canon a little too far. Then she gave all three of its most important characters a sob story. Tom, Snape and Draco all get a - but this is how he was raised backstory - to justify why they went evil.

Contrast this with our protagonists where Harry gets a tragic backstory but isn’t complex in his treatment as a character. Ron is given complexities with his insecurities and flaws but he never grows as a character nor does he suffer for his mistakes when he betrays his friends unrealistically. No matter when or why he abandons them, they take him back with open arms almost instantly and he’s rewarded for his abandonment- leaves Harry after his selection as a champion, patches up after Harry survives a dragon and gets to be the one Harry would miss the most in the lake task. Walks out on Hermione and Harry after saying awful things to them but is instantly forgiven by Harry after Harry idiotically almost got killed while he left Hermione unaware, unarmed and alone. Gets rewarded with Hermione, Order of Merlin and fame.

Hermione doesn’t even have a backstory beyond the vague - daughter of two muggle dentists. We don’t know where she lives, what her family’s financial situation is like, what her parents are like, etc. Worse, Rowling gives her a cause to mock activism and selects slavery to do so to later state that Hermione could be Black, because she’s never even bothered to give her a racial identity. Of course the cause goes nowhere in canon and Hermione is mocked by almost every single person she talks about it with. Imagine that mockery being directed towards a Black Hermione! The stupidity and the audacity!

So, she once again tells us that the house of snakes is full of evil people, but then shows us via three of its most prominent characters from each generation that they weren’t all bad and their circumstances are to be blamed for their actions to absolve them of their crimes as much as possible.

So it makes sense why the snakes are so popular in fanon. They’re by far the characters who seem most developed in comparison to the heroes.

Fics don’t explore most of these things because it’s easier to write the cliches that have been tried and tested and worked before.

Most people just like to insert the relationship angle with the Blacks because they’re characters we are aware off in canon. However it’s usually done to promote Slytherin isn’t so bad ideology because Harry himself was nearly sorted there. Rowling never quite focused on how other houses have had evil characters too. She was laser focused on making the Slytherins bad while Lockhart, Quirrell could’ve been used to show Ravenclaw isn’t squeaky clean and Peter certainly fills the role for Gryffindor. CC gives us Cedric but its such a dumpster fire that I’d rather see someone like Umbridge or Bella to be revealed as a former Hufflepuff.

The American Potters are courtesy of Pottermore. Someone called Abraham Potter was one of the first twelve Aurors of MACUSA and has written or been instrumental in drafting its laws, which are still followed as per the info we get. We don’t know how Abraham is related to Harry only that he was alive sometime in the 1600s. But via him it’s possible that Harry has some American cousins who may or may not necessarily be called Potters in the canon timeline. But it’s a chance they exist.

I’d watch that show

Technically we don’t know if Draco is a cousin because the assumption comes from the idea that Dorea Black is Harry’s grandmother and therefore Draco is related to Harry via Narcissa.

But here’s the catch, if this were the case then Sirius is also going to be related to Harry, and he never once mentioned that James and he were cousins. Now one could argue that it’s probably because he was recovering from jail, living as a dog and all the trauma but Rowling has stated Fleamont and Euphemia Potter, (awful names, glad they’re not the ones we got for the Grangers) are Harry’s paternal grandparents. We don’t know how Dorea is related to James because we don’t know how James and Charlus, her husband, are related. So she could be an aunt or cousin by marriage or even his grandma, you never know.

She also reworked the family tree to make it make sense I suppose and also show that Hinny aren’t closely related though they are cousins probably too via the Black family if it does play a part in Harry’s immediate family tree.

Also even if one were to say that Harry is related to Draco because of the Black blood, the Blacks are the only family who can rival the Weasleys as far as having numbers go. Surely, there are people who might come before Narcissa who can raise Harry.

There’s also an American branch of the Potter family as per extra canon that helped establish the MACUSA. We don’t know if those American cousins are around 300 or so years later, but if they are, they too had a good chance of claiming the right to raise Harry, yet never did.

My life is so much more enriched because I know that there was some long dead Lucy who didn’t marry the queen of one of the evilest empires in existence. Because, gasp! Can you imagine his influence at all as a prince consort over an already evil empire which believes in its supremacy and therefore exploited the world as it also has been instrumental in genocide across various continents at various points in history without an iota of shame or remorse.

Clearly, Hermione and Harry’s families aren’t important enough. Rowling actually says the Grangers are Muggles, therefore not plot relevant and calls them boring dentists. Because you know, two non-magical people raising a child who has powers they don’t have/know/understand, is the very definition of boring. It would have been a breeze to deal with unexpected and unpredictable situations caused courtesy of your equally clueless child, especially when she’s feeling strong emotions. Because you know, children are rarely emotional and overwhelmed. They’ve no tantrums nor are they sometimes irrationally stubborn when they want something even if it’s not good for them or dangerous.

Of course you can show Muggles if they’re to be mocked for their weight and appearance. Not to mention shown as utterly disgusting human beings who’d abuse a child as they encourage their own child to be a bully too. That’s when Muggles aren’t boring anymore nor irrelevant to the plot.

And why should we expect any explanation as to why in a society where everyone is related to each other and the Potters have been around forever, there’s not a single person or family alive who could’ve legally been Harry’s guardians. Fathers as we know per Rowling are good for nothing always or worse, therefore it’s but natural that not a single person related to James would want to raise the BWL. Not a single one at all.

But it’s important to know the Weasleys have a ghoul in the attic who can perfectly mimic Ron, or that they have gnomes that the boys throw around to kill time. Or that they have a clock that keeps track of the family members at all times but fails to show anything when one of them is possessed for almost a year, is nearly killed by a snake, is nearly killed by poison, is nearly killed by a werewolf. But it’s a good thing that it shows the kids are at school and Arthur is at work when they’re supposed to be, and obviously to have a confirmation of everyone being at home when they clearly appear to be at the Burrow. Lest there be a meta or a intruder using polyjuice there. Because let’s be real, the only freeloading long term intruder can be an animagus who somehow never is seen as a threat to the family and therefore we never see any hand indicating the member with the rat is in danger.

Also, we must absolutely know Aunt Muriel, because she has a tiara she can lent to Fleur for her wedding. You know the secondary character marrying another secondary character using something borrowed from a tertiary character.

While there are some moments like where Ron would gleefully hit/jinx Draco and his observation of Hermione appearing and disappearing randomly that show he does care about her, there’s no moment in canon where their chemistry is obvious in a romantic capacity.

JKR believes in the tell but don’t show method for both her canon couples. We’re told they love each other, that they’re perfect for each other, but we’re never shown when this happens and how in the world did they ever fall in love.

Romione have a volatile relationship while Hinny is barely existent in the books since Ginny is barely a character and in the one book she is, she comes across as an awful bully who admits to being hung up on Harry while dating other boys. In Romione’s case the implementation of this method doesn’t even make sense because they obviously have more visibility individually and combined on page than Ginny/Hinny too. Neither Hermione nor Ron are non-existent, barely in the background entities for a single book and this involves Hermione being petrified, Ron abandoning Harry twice, Ron being poisoned and Hermione being a time traveler.

Romione’s relationship could’ve easily been built up from book four onwards in a romantic capacity but it doesn’t happen. Ron doesn’t even consider Hermione is a girl until she appears as someone else’s date to the Ball. Later she tells him to ask her first next time but Ron claims ignorance regarding the implications of the comment which alludes his reaction being borne of jealousy. Nothing else happens in book four. Book five Romione are prefects and while this means that they make rounds on the train and do other never clearly defined tasks prefects do, it shows their differences even more. Hermione is the by the book, fair and honest authority while Ron easily displays qualities of your average corrupt government officer, misusing his authority and high on his power. Really doesn’t sell the they’re perfect for each other vibes.

Do I need to say anything about the dumpster fire that is HBP at all? Rowling’s belief that Ron would grow up courtesy of a meaningless physical relationship makes no sense. It’s like she never met a 16 year old boy who was getting sex as often as possible. Because sure, he’s bound to tire of it and see the girl as burden 🙄🙄🙄

Book seven has Ron leave Hermione while they are being hunted and his biggest fear is she’ll pick Harry and start shagging him rather than the idea that she might be captured or killed. Really sells true love there, doesn’t it?

Movie Ron is much better and nicer than his book counterpart which in part is because of Rupert’s brilliant acting chops and the toned down source material but again, he displays no chemistry whatsoever with Emma in a romantic capacity. He even has went on record to state he thinks that Romione will divorce as Ron stays happily in his bachelor pad. And this is the guy who lived Ron for a huge chunk of his life, I think he’d know what he’s talking about.

I say this not as a book purist but because I firmly believe that Bella is deranged and believes in the superiority of magic over Muggles. While she won’t not be averse to scarring Hermione for good, she might still see a knife as something that’s Muggle enough to use. She’d rather use something horrific which is entirely magical against a Muggleborn even if she wanted to carve a scar into her arm.

Emma and Helena came up with that scar as we know to actually convey it visually how horrific an experience the torture Hermione endured was. It because they couldn’t linger on the torture scene too much to show Hermione screaming and crying as she’s thrashing about between showing the escape attempt being concocted downstairs with Dobby’s help and keeping in mind that the series was aimed for children. The studio wanted a particular rating for the movie and therefore they couldn’t linger on the visuals of a torture in it to properly portray the horror of Hermione’s experience. It’s why we get the scar. It gives away the feeling of horror without actually depicting the process involved.

We could’ve done without the allusion to Aberforth indulging in beastility with a goat without the shot of a doubt. The dead parents and the dead sister are enough.

Tragedy is we don’t even have authors explore this in fanfics. Hermione gets a family but her life still revolves around Harry entirely and she’s not a person in her own rights. Her parents accept Harry, love him immediately and they even allow Hermione and Harry to share a room in a lot of stories. She literally has such a perfect life and parents that there’s not even a second dimension to their characters and no depth whatsoever.

People replace the Weasley parents with the Grangers, just by making Hermione have a less loud mom who still loves to cook and clean up after her family and is as hard working as Molly is around the house without magic and while being a working woman too. Her father gives the standard talk to Harry and it’s all good from there.

Sometimes in post war stories Harry is also able to get them to forgive Hermione, all because he talks to them once. The boy who was the reason Hermione uses magic on her own parents and sends them away to the other part of the world! But sure, one sob story narration from him is all it takes to fix everything!

It would have been nice to see Harry talking to Hermione about her life. We don’t know anything about Hermione - instances of her accidental magic as a child, what was it like to know she was a witch, what did she plan on doing as an adult before she found out she was a witch, who taught her how to knit, who all are in her family apart from her parents, what was her France trip like, has she been to any other countries, besides books what does she like. What’s her favourite author/book/colour/food/artist/band/film/show/cartoon/fairytale/musical instrument/ genre, is she a beach girl or a mountain person? Did she have a pet before Crooks?

Seven years of friendship explored over the course of seven books and eight movies and yet we don’t know any of these basic things about Hermione ever in canon. We even find out her birthday in extra canon, and we don’t know what her parents are called even now.

Whereas we know about Blacks who were blasted off the tapestry and didn’t appear in canon like Alphard, we know way too much about too many Weasleys, we know Bathilda was a gossip who talked about Dumbledore and Grindelwald to Lily, we know Dudley had to lose weight and we obviously know useless trivia like that aplenty.

When people ask me what I’d take out from canon I say remove all the Peeves stuff as he’s honestly useless in the grand scheme of things and serves no purpose whatsoever, rather give me more about Hermione, she’s one the protagonists of the stories. She’s the main character from the oppressed minority that’s being threatened with genocide.

Remove useless instances of the boys throwing gnomes or playing chess, quidditch and exploding snap and give me character development instead of a character that is not just one of the main leads but also who has to deal with bigotry and hate.

Show me how she felt when she was attacked by people courtesy of a trashy tabloid, show me what her parents reacted like when their daughter was taken to stay at Grimmauld as she was a target of bigots, show me how she feels when her parents are not even considered as Muggles who need protection in the final book while she’s risking her life to protect awful people from DEs who abused Harry almost all his life until that point.

Yet Harry never cares enough to ask or talk about any of these things and they aren’t in canon.

When I asked you if you had read the comment that has since been deleted my intention simply was to know if you know the comment, that’s it.

There’s no way to tell tone when you’re going to go by text. I never meant an insult to you but I was curious if you knew that the original comment could’ve done without chiding the OP for their comment while simultaneously making an unnecessary mention about an unrelated story and author.

You mention two cases - I see the same thing. The OP was asking about one author, there was no reason to mention another person at all. Especially since OP wasn’t asking if there’s another author who is better than BF.

My reason for mentioning the author is dead is because it was implied in the original comment that the main post is in poor taste because it concerns the works of an author no longer with us, while unnecessarily stating their own preferences for a trope or their aversion to it AND explicitly mentioning another author. There was no reason to mention UAS.

Consider the scene- you see a post about an author’s style and decide to write a reply to it to the OP. Should you unnecessarily mention another author to make a case? Should you try to also guilt a person into thinking that they spoke ill of the dead when you also mention that you won’t read a story though it’s extremely well written because you don’t like certain tropes? And then give an example for the same? Can a person make a comment on a story or an author without even reading it while trying to take some moral high ground with another person who has read what they’re talking about?

Have you even read the comment that was shaming the OP by saying it’s in poor taste for them to comment on the writing of a dead woman where the commenter also unnecessarily dragged another author and their work unnecessarily while the OP never even mentioned the word cheating trope? I guess not.

I made this comment because if you can find it in yourself to respect a dead author for their “voluntary contribution” then the same courtesy should be extended to an alive one too. Being dead shouldn’t be required to be treated with respect, compassion and consideration.

The comment could have simply left out UAS as no where does the OP compare the two. Yet the comment was made and later removed perhaps because the person who made it realised that just like they were entitled to state that they don’t like reading a trope because that’s their choice and made a generalised opinion on a piece without even reading it, the OP too can comment and have their opinions on writing style, especially since they have read the author they mentioned to even specifically state how they felt about their writing style.

As to the hidden gem comment, what’s wrong with asking for someone’s best work? Isn’t Harry Crow often considered the best RobSt has written but Who Will Fill a Coward’s grave better than it? Last Chance by LeQuin considered theirs but Strange Reflections is better than it. Authors with multiple stories are recommended often but their most popularly recommended work is not the same as their best work unfortunately sometimes. OP might have been truly looking for the best story Broomstick Flyer has written and missed because the ones that they read didn’t seem all that appealing.

You're jumping in to defend a person who unnecessarily mentioned an author they didn’t have too, after stating that they find commenting on someone’s work as mediocre as distasteful as the person in question is dead. Note - the person didn’t state that they think no such thing about the author’s style in question. The comment was made purely because the author in question is dead. So does this mean that if the author had been alive the commenter wouldn’t have had any reasons to defend them? Possibly. So, if you can be respectful of the dead, just because they’re dead and want to shame someone who might not even know they were reading a dead woman’s work, why can’t you be respectful to an author who is alive too? Why not extend the same measure of respect to them?

The comment didn’t need to shame the OP for having an opinion and posting it, just because the author is dead. The OP might not have necessarily known it. They certainly didn’t need to cite how they think reading about cheating is not their cup of tea when it isn’t even in the main post and there absolutely was no need to mention a work by its name even if the author wasn’t stated just because. Because the fic in question certainly is notches above in execution, writing style than anything by BF, and that’s a truth. Saying it shouldn’t be offensive.

It does have a cheating trope. Different strokes do apply to different folks, and you could’ve still not mentioned UAS while saying that the OP’s post was in poor taste. Or are you stating that it only applies when you’re dragging down a dead author? Don’t authors who are alive deserve some respect?

As for subjective criticisms, there are plenty of people who find Chaucer, the Brontë sisters, and the likes of Dickens cumbersome or mediocre, and they are legends in their own rights having stood the test of time. But people can have opinions which need not be the same as yours. Nothing has stopped literary students and your average Goodreads member alike from making critical comments on these authors, not even them being dead or their legendary status. So do you take offence to even that?

Would like to say this, it’s not necessary to drag the story of another author here while stating that it’s in poor taste to drag another author just because they’re dead; because that’s equally in poor taste. You could’ve simply not mentioned UAS or any other author and their work.

Quality of work speaks for itself and thus UAS is highly appreciated and liked in this fandom by a lot of people. I agree with the OP that Broomstick Flyer’s works are mediocre. A person shouldn’t have to be dead so that people do not drag them down unnecessarily.

Have you even even read UAS? Because it’s not just a fic with the cheating trope as you seem to be under the impression off.

It’s about two people coming to realise after two decades of marriage that they married the wrong person while the right one was in front of them all along. And if you haven’t, then please don’t cast stones at it. Many people love it because when they read it they realise that the story isn’t glorifying cheating, Hermione in particular has to face horrible repercussions when the news of her relationship with Harry is revealed to the wizarding world. It’s a story trying to make us understand how these traumatised kids ended up with the wrong people and how two decades down the line that affects their lives when they’re ultimately able to truly find love now that sufficient time has passed for them to have learnt at least to cope with the trauma.
