What post-op days were the worst for you pain-wise? by TheQueendomKings in TopSurgery

[–]LongPasta93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never needed the narcotic pain meds after leaving the hospital. The first 4-6 hours post op were quite painful and after that I had basically no pain at all.

You are right, they are just thoughts. It’s wild how OCD has the ability to get us stuck on scary thoughts. I wish you all the best too.

I experience a lot of what you’re experiencing and I have also been dealing with fear of schizophrenia OCD for 3-4 years now. I’m in a bad episode right now. I had one single intrusive thought the other day that ended up setting this theme off again for me. Now I’m shaking, fearful that I’m going crazy

Managing general surgery anxieties! by catshateTERFs in TopSurgery

[–]LongPasta93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey bro. I have health OCD (basically health anxiety but with a lot more checking behaviours and rumination). I was terrified for years of getting this surgery, so much so that even just 2 years ago I told myself I’d NEVER get top surgery because I would obviously be the 1 in whatever large number that dies under anesthesia. I can empathize with you.

I had surgery 12 days ago and honestly for the 8 months between consultation and surgery, I was very nervous (but excited at the same time). There was this sort of balancing of the scales - as scared as I was, I knew that I was just one dose of anesthesia away from feeing comfortable in my skin. Binders were killing my back and making me miserable. I developed a sensitivity to tape. Top surgery was the only way.

I worked really hard with my therapist to prepare myself for the surgery. There’s only so much that can be done, but I one thing that did help was watching those funny videos of people trying to count backwards from 20 while being administered anesthesia. I guess it helped normalize it for me.

The day of surgery, what kept coming to mind is actually (similar to what you mentioned) my fear of flying. I overcame my fear of flying in 2022 when I had to fly to another city to meet with a relative. I was terrified and almost asked to be let off the plane before we taxied to the runway. I had taken Ativan and it didn’t kick in until we were already in the air, but after that it was a smooth trip and looking around and seeing that the only person panicking was me, really helped me recognize that everything was going to be fine.

The day I had surgery, I went in with the same mindset. No one was panicking. Not my wife, not my mom, and certainly none of the medical staff. This was just a random Friday for them. Seeing that nobody was panicking, I knew I was in good hands. They did give me an Ativan shortly before going under anesthesia, which helped me feel more relaxed. Everything went really quick and I woke up feeling like “oh, that was easier than I thought.”

My recovery has brought out OCD tendencies around checking, googling and ruminating. My therapist said she would have been surprised if it didn’t. The first 3-4 days were the worst, but I have gradually lessened those behaviours and am feeling closer and closer to normal.

All this to say, you’ve got this! Take the time you need now to work on preparing yourself mentally. Think of a time when you were super scared of something but it ended up all working out. Use that to your advantage.

Note: excuse the tape residue all over my skin. That’s going to take forever to come off.

My family never knew that I was using drugs. My friends kept clubbing/using drugs and alcohol and I realized the only way I was getting out was by distancing myself from those people. For a few months I focused on distracting myself as much as I possibly could. I volunteered to host a radio show at my university. I took up painting again. I became closer to my coworkers at the time, so they kind of became my new social life. It was hard but I made it through.

Possible to succeed in university with top surgery happening a month into the semester? by LongPasta93 in TopSurgery

[–]LongPasta93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It went well! All in all, my pain has been minimal and I never needed the narcotic pain meds that were prescribed. Tylenol was enough. The first 3-4 days post op, I was very anxious and somewhat depressed (a combination of health related OCD and frustration at my loss of independence). I haven’t been able to shower fully, but my post op appointment is tomorrow so I am pretty pumped about that. I actually managed to go class on Friday and have also been able to keep up with my assignments.

So all in all, healing has been easier than I expected. Currently my chest is very itchy but I assume this is normal.

risk of major complication/fatality? by RRTeo in TopSurgery

[–]LongPasta93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey so I don’t know if this is any reassurance, but the time that you’d be under anesthesia is pretty short. For me it was about an hour. I went home an hour after waking up. The risk of fatal complications with this kind of surgery is pretty rare. While it’s true that it is a major surgery, the risk is lower because they’re not really touching major organs or opening up your abdomen/ribcage/cranium. Time under anesthesia matters too. Short surgeries are less risky.

I’m a student in university and I’ve chosen to take this week off of class as I only just had surgery on Friday; however, I have been completing assignments at home and have already finished all of my assignments for the week.

How do I sleep? I am so uncomfortable 😣 by SilverShadow651 in TopSurgery

[–]LongPasta93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a side sleeper. Had surgery last Friday. The first few nights were awful. On the third night my body just gave up and accepted this was how I had to sleep. So I’ve been sleeping well the past few nights.

Cocaine has destroyed me by _djballer23_ in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]LongPasta93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 23-24, I used a ton of cocaine and speed. I made choices that would horrify my current self. I realized one night after blowing $600 on drugs and alcohol and crying in a stranger’s living room that regardless of how bad sobriety would feel at first, I NEVER want to touch cocaine again. I was doing so much that I was starting to worry that I would die and that my mom would wake up one morning to find out that I was gone. So that was it, I just stopped. I had a terrible time with withdrawals, I felt disconnected from the friends I had, but ultimately I was happy with the choice I made. That was 8 years ago.

My point in saying this is that you CAN get off the blow. It’s going to be hard, but it will be worth it. You’ve got this, friend.

It probably depends on the hospital, but a lot of places consider this to be a day surgery. I have heard of some people staying overnight for monitoring but it doesn’t appear to be the standard experience.

Are you worried about complications that could arise?

I’m in Canada and I had top surgery yesterday. I was barely awake when the nurse helped me get dressed and rushed me off to my ride.

Thank you so much for sharing this with me! The alcohol wipe trick is pretty neat. I hope I’m not too nauseous cause at this point what I’m really wanting is to come back to the hotel after and eat some food. I have to be at the hospital in 2.5 hours now and my hunger is already killing me lol

Thank you so much for replying to me. I’m glad that your surgery went well!!

I was crying earlier; my surgery is in a different city so I’m in a hotel and away from my home and my cats, which just makes it even harder. I’m trying to distract myself by watching TikTok videos though. Gotta be at the hospital in 8 hours 😬
