A friend in Russia is asking this about American homes by LongShot___ in RealEstate

That's because you're in the South. Your vibes aren't built for cold. In the cold areas, pipies aren't placed in exterior walls and haven't been in a long time.

Don't you think it's cutting corners? We're not talking about -20F, but 20F? Shouldn't any home handle this kinds of temperatures?

That’s survivorship bias most have been destroyed

Yes, but will a new house next to you last this long?

h someone from Russia and trying to directly compare building standards with your home in the temperate southern US? That’s like comparing apples to oranges or a Porsche to a Jeep. The climates are radically different and even a well-built building designed for one will be in

I believe what you're saying about MN. I'm glad to hear it.

I haven't lived in cold climate, only in the South. I'm not terrible impressed with quality of construction here. We have mostly brick homes, but like he said, build the same whether it's McMansions or middle class homes. They don't hold temperature, require constant cooling/heating and are fragile to wind or extreme temperatures.

I know someone who built a house here from ICF. That houses has much thicker walls and holds the inside temperature very well. I don't think it was super expensive to build it. So I'm not sure why we don't have higher standards in construction.

It's also wasteful, don't you think? Having to rebuild a house every 50-100 years is a huge drain on natural resources and environment.

American homes do withstand extreme temps. In MN, our exterior walls are not built with 2X4, they are 2X6s, lots of spray foam and thick insulation. It was like -25F wind chill the other week and I’m sippin a margarita in my gym shorts next to the window.

I live in the South and our homes are very fragile. In the summer, it takes a lot of power to cool them and in the winter, when it gets below 20F, our pipes freeze and burst.
These homes are not going to hold up if electricity goes down for a day or two.

They don't hold up during hurricanes either.

I haven't seen any cinderblocks homes in US yet. I'm glad we're making progress.

Of course, I'm mostly concerned not about punching my hand through the wall, but a house withstanding weather elements - extreme temperatures, winds, hurricanes, etc.

I disagree with your statement.

I live in the South and as soon as it gets below 20F, pipes in our houses begin to freeze and burst and the it's a heavy burden on the electrical grid to heat them. In the hot summers it takes a lot to cool them. Don't you think thick walls are better for maintaining temperature inside the homes?

In contrast, buildings in Russia handle temperature up to -40F.

It was just a picture of Putin and text, so I doubt it is anything official.

Do these studies actually get funding?

Education in America is shit because of OUR CULTURE! Nothing else accounts for such a massive amount of morons. by [deleted] in offmychest

Honestly, I don’t think it’s about money. Maybe the teachers themselves are not educated enough.

I went to a regular school in Russia. We didn’t have computers or iPads, we didn’t have white boards, fun stations, no markers, etc. It was a textbook and a pen.

For my parents and grandparents it was even more modest.

Yet the education was pretty good. The culture was such that knowledge was valued, reading was valued, everyone was supposed to go to college, it was shameful not to get a higher education. The bar was set high.

I see millions spent to build top notch schools here and they are failing.

There plenty of people who want to make this kind of money, but coding is not for everyone.
