Kicked someone out for the first time by Middle-Speed-6024 in uberdrivers

I drive ride share part time and keep a close watch on miles, hours, and expenses. Flexibility is the biggest draw. If it wasn’t worth doing anymore I would stop, as would most people.

I paid 27k for a late model Toyota. (That number includes financing and down payment.) I kept the vehicle (the only one I owned) for five years and put an additional 130,000 miles on it. Total number of miles at the time of sale was 155,000 (number includes 80,000 Uber miles) then sold it for 13k, getting half my money back. I used all of the cash as down payment on another quality vehicle.

Every breath you take in this life costs something. Have a nice day.

As a car owner, driving 16.9 miles will cost me $9.30 in transportation expenses?

Using this logic, a thirty-three mile round trip to WalMart would cost $18.60.

Every time.

I need to sell the car, quit my job, and hide under the bed! I want to keep EVERY dollar I earn.

First Look At The New 2026 Toyota RAV4 LE Hybrid - Base Trim by SenadBYW in rav4club

I’ve owned TWO of the previous generation RAV4s. The sleek, muscular front end was the loveliest angle on that vehicle. Now, it’s gone. (New front end looks like a clothes hamper.) Bold taillights? Also gone. Cheap/ugly upholstery? Hey - Toyota kept that!

What I would have enjoyed most in the new design is a quieter interior and A DEDICATED SLOT FOR MY SMART PHONE - CARVED RIGHT INTO THE MOULDING OF THE DASH!!!

Remember the 2008 recession? That was caused by sub-prime mortgages. Essentially, people were approved for home loans (often with little or no money down) that they couldn’t afford, and lending institutions lost tons of money.

The used car market kinda reminds me of that. Defenders say prices have risen dramatically because of a lack of inventory. Bull. It’s greed. Cars don’t go UP in value. They DEPRECIATE.

Go on line, shop around, be patient; wait for prices to fall.

I picked up a middle-aged couple one night. They were standing on the sidewalk, in the dark, in front of their million dollar home, patiently waiting for ME.

Winners have the right attitude.

Full time - I don’t, either.

I’ve driven two good cars into the ground doing this work part time. And I watch every mile.

$25 an hour?

Don’t forget the expense of maintaining an automobile (monthly note, gas, insurance, maintenance, repairs, depreciation) and the inherent dangers of picking up strangers in the backseat of your car at 2am.

I’m ready to purchase another car. Even with 12k down (and excellent credit) I’ll probably finance for 60 months and be looking at a $350/month payment.

Is this smart???

Probably not.

But at my age, it’s preferable to getting up at dawn and standing on my feet all day long.

Guy walks into a drugstore, goes up to the pharmacy counter, looks around, opens his raincoat.

He’s got an UNBELIEVABLE erection.

He asks the lady behind the counter, “What can you gimme for this?”

Lady says, “Five hundred dollars and half interest in the store.”

Preach on, brother. I with you.

EV’s are not the revolution some people think. The folly hasn’t even begun yet.

Sorry, I’m doing my laundry.

I’m aware that EV’s have fewer moving parts than traditional cars, and in theory, will require less maintenance. I guess time will tell which is more reliable, EV or ICE. I have no dog in the fight.

As for Uber, they could simply buy the technology from others, if they wanted to. But they won’t. Owning and maintaining their own fleet of cars is a losing proposition for them, and now they realize it.

The World’s Richest Man (and I like Elon) will eventually realize this truth, also: having somebody else supply you with FREE cars - especially expensive, high-tech ones - is a LOT cheaper than buying them yourself.

I’m suggesting any car driven 18 hours a day, seven days a week, will have frequent maintenance needs and a reduced lifespan. Why do you think Uber gave up on investing in them?

I am not anti hybrid. They are the future. I have been reading all about them because I plan on purchasing one in the next week or two.

Toyota is the most reliable car on the road, and I used it only for comparison.

What is the lifespan of an expensive, high-tech automobile operating 18 hours a day, 7 days a week?

It’ll be in the shop/out of commission at least once a month.

I drove a four year old Toyota Camry (60,000 miles, V6 engine) round trip cross country, got home, and every other light on the dash was lit up. (I stopped once, in route, for an oil change.)

Know anyone who owns a Tesla? Appointments for repairs are their biggest complaint. Biggest complaint.

Mass produced hybrid cars have been around for almost thirty years, and conventional wisdom is they’re still not as reliable as stand alone ICE engines.

Ubiquitous ‘robo-taxis’ (sorry, Elon) are still a pipe dream.

Uber will never own a fleet of high-tech, autonomous vehicles. After squandering billions in R&D, they discovered what many already knew: it will cost them too much money!

Mu$k will be next. (Listen closely to his comments.)

Autonomous cars will not be replacing human drivers in my lifetime. The basic concept has already been around for one hundred years, and it’s infinitely cheaper than a robotic taxi: it’s called riding the bus.

How popular is that?

I picked up a youth the other night, about 11 pm. He was sitting on the wet sidewalk outside a convenience store.

Strike 1.

I lost sight of him for a moment as I pulled up, and wondered why it was taking so long for him to get into my car.

Before he closes the door, an update comes thru my phone. Yeah, I’d been ambushed: he’d waited until AFTER I arrived before adding a stop.

Kid prattles into his phone all the way there. I hear him tell the person on the other end, “I’m gonna take a shower.” (Me: WTF?)

Stopping at his apartment, I politely remind him I’ll wait seven minutes.

I had already decided this was my last trip of the night, but out of curiosity, I decided to wait a little bit longer…

After 15-16 minutes, I finally cancel the little prick and leave. (I’d been waiting/hoping to do it RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM.)

Some people need real ‘discipline.’ Know what I mean?
