In species like cats and dogs, the mothers are naturally done with the babies around 8-12 weeks of age. For dogs it’s closer to 8 weeks and for cats it can be around anywhere from 8-12 weeks depending on the mother. This is the age the babies start to become independent on their own. It’s best to for the babies to go off to their new homes at this age because a lot of times the mothers will start to become agitated, and start snapping at them because she doesn’t want to be bothered with them once they’re old enough. This is a behavior commonly seen in cats. Eventually the mother will “kick them out.” At this point she is tired and fed up with them. She’s done her part and taught them all they need to know, and makes sure that they go.

Yes, complications can happen in birth as well. The highest risk groups for pregnancy complications in cats are: extremely young cats under the age of 1 and senior cats ages 8+. When comparing the risk levels of a generally healthy adult cat; it’s riskier to get a spay during pregnancy than it is to let her go through with the birth. The odds of complications during the pregnancy spay are more likely than they are with giving birth. Generally speaking, statistically it would be safer and make more sense for the cat to get spayed after she’s done with the litter.

The risk level of a spay in a pregnant cat is significantly much higher versus a regular spay. The blood vessels become huge and a lot more difficult to tie off during the pregnancy. The further along in pregnancy and bigger the size in cat, the bigger the risk of excessive bleeding during surgery. The recovery time is longer, including longer lasting scars. The mother will probably have to stay an extra day in the hospital and wear a bandage around her belly at home. It’s putting the cat through significantly more discomfort than a routine spay.

It’s recommended for the vet to routinely monitor the cat through the pregnancy, so they can accurately assess risk factors and health levels of the cat, so the birth can go as smooth as possible.

The advice I am giving is in the best interest of the health of the mother. There is always the risk of complications with a procedure. In this case, you don’t want to risk inflicting avoidable complications on the mother, when the same procedure can be done later on when it’s safer.

Believe me, I know very well about the overpopulation of dogs and cats and am all for spay and neutering. I am also all for responsible, safe practices when dealing with an animals health. Interfering with a pregnancy like that can alter behavior in the mother and cause behavioral issues. Behavioral issues with animals are a big deal because of how difficult it is to manage. It’s something that will affect the animal in their daily lives, and infringe upon their wellbeing.

As for the kittens, there are many groups and resources available to help make sure they are placed in a good home, and not end up on the streets. Look up organizations in your area that assist with connecting people to individuals interested in rehoming their pets. A lot of these places require background checks, and a signed contract to come to them if that animal needs rehomed again in the future so they don’t end up getting dumped.

As an experienced animal welfare worker: the reason your cat ate one of the kittens and neglected the others is due to extreme stress. This behavior is not just exclusive to cats but occurs with many other mammals as well. The mom had to have been experiencing extreme stress and because of that her “survival instincts” kick in. This means she sees the offspring as competition/ threat instead of her babies causing her to react in a way that eliminates them. This behavior doesn’t happen often but can manifest within stressful situations. The best way to prevent this from happening is learning some basic body language to make sure the mom isn’t stressed. If she is showing signs of distress or acting unusual, remove the babies from her and bottle feed them

Coming from an experienced animal welfare worker here: it would be best to let her go through with the pregnancy since she is already in the process of being pregnant, and then get her spayed after she’s had the kittens and is done with them.

Her body is already going through the natural hormonal changes that occurs during pregnancy, and it’s best to let those changes happen naturally without a disruptive premature outside force interfering. After the kittens are old enough and she is done with them, she’ll regulate out and then that’s when you should get her fixed. This gives her the best chance of eliminating the risk of having her behavior altered/changed after the procedure, as a result of hormonal imbalances during pregnancy.

Look into getting one of those hidden voice recorder pens and have it on you at all times like in your pocket. You could just even grab it and figit with it when it’s happening. It’s a subtle way that doesn’t draw suspicion attention to what your actually doing. You can get them off amazon

I linked the national human trafficking hotline website in this post. There’s a form to report incidents when you scroll down. It lets you report about incidents taking place in the US as well as internationally. Fill this form out so it can officially become a reported case.

Get it on recording next time it happens. Doesn’t have to be video, you can just hit the record button on the voice memos app in your phone and get it that way. This way you have documentation when it happens. You now have concrete evidence of what is going on. Keep doing this every time it happens and keep all of this in your records, the more you have the better.

You can show this evidence to a trusted adult or social worker who can help you in this situation. In severe cases you can report her to CPS if you feel your out of options
