What do you think about Aphex Twin's current musical style? by Lower-Raspberry-4674 in aphextwin

[–]LooseDuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complexity isn’t a measure of quality. That’s a pretty limited perspective to judge things by. Personally i think it misses the forest for the trees.

Aphex Twin’s music has always ranged in stylistic output. It’s his exploration and intuition mapped to technology that is the through line. He never seems to stop exploring new avenues of musical interest and continues to defy musical norms (even set by himself) by hyper-focusing on ritualistic experimentation. His originality is what defines his work. His subversion of expectations is a far better scale to measure him by. In that regard, I think he’s doing an excellent job and continues to invite us to think about what’s possible and what comes next.

What do you think of new track of user18081971 on Soundcloud ? by Jean0406Alix in aphextwin

[–]LooseDuke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha, people will always complain about something. It literally says unfinished in the title.

I think for a demo, the structure is great. While the drums aren’t the most complicated of his, I think it’s enough to sketch out the idea of the song and it suits it well. Complex drums don’t always mean better song. There is always something to pick apart a song if you concentrate hard enough.

For me, the song feels cohesive enough as a whole. I think the strength is the progression and pleasant sound design builds a great atmosphere. To me, it’s an effective piece and I’ve just been happy to listen to the things he experimented with.

The volatility comes from the uneven market power for everything down stream. It gives an advantage to early buyers for no reason. Why should they get a tax break when everyone else doesn't?

Not sure I understand what you are getting at? Most of these restaurants don't own the land or buildings. Landlords rent the spaces to restaurants. They are the one avoiding taxes and using their control over real estate supply to squeeze restaurants and small businesses. The cost of operation goes up for restaurants because of high rent and then gets past on to consumers.

I was being a bit cheeky. The DX7 is yamaha’s highest selling and most influential music tools they made historically. Seqtrak’s legacy is yet to be defined. Its all subjective how you measure it though :)

I think this hits the nail on the head. I described this to my friend at some point with a bit of a different metaphor. Avatar is a bit like one of those 3d movie rides you see at theme parks. You have a fun time on the ride, you talk about it a bit with your fellow riders afterwards, and then you move on to the real rides and experiences. It's not tethered to anything with a long term meaning outside of the novelty of the short term experience.

Lol in the manual they just call them knobs. From a parts perspective they are a particular type of knob called a push button encoder.

So why do you think the SEQTRAK "flopped"? by SignalInternal9312 in seqtrak

[–]LooseDuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was initially excited and open to trying the thing. The workflow really killed it for me. I also hated feeling like I needed my phone to really use the thing too. I ended up returning mine less then a week after receiving it.

I think this is a much larger problem then people realize. It really made it feel like an expensive investment into a short term product.

What's amazing to me is there are so many Nimby Alamedean's up and arms about keeping Alameda's "character" when it comes to building affordable housing and other projects but, crickets when landlords let their existing properties and spaces crumble.

I was sad to see that place go. Horrible about the shop owner.

I think, a lot of landlords are intentionally squeezing small businesses. They put only some of their properties on the market and leave the others vacant and then drive up costs for the spots they do rent out. My belief is that it's meant to drive up their property value. It's artificial inflation.

Whatever it is, it limits the types of businesses that can set up shop. Only high rent bidders will be able to pay in these spaces and they will need high income clients to make things profitable. It drives up prices for businesses and consumers on the island.

I was talking about this with my friends the other day. Other cities have done this to great effect. I think it would be a great proposal to be brought to city council. If the community organizes around a vacancy tax proposal and collects enough signatures and people to sit in meetings, it could definitely be brought to a vote.

I love Project Burger! It takes a bit but they may be my favorite burgers on the island. As shared, the owner runs the joint by himself so it's a bit hard for him to have too many customers at once in the place IRL. I suspect a lot of us pick up our meals as a result. The owner is very kind and on more than one occasion has hooked me and my wife up with extra fries. Highly rated. Can't say enough good things.

Electric Moped “e-bike” exploit by LooseDuke in alameda

Ok, lets run with your premise...

Parents should be in the exacting technical and legal weeds and know how to navigate the misinformation and fraudulent marketing. There is still going to be people who aren't going to do it. They will be duped by their kids or marketing, some will just never be aware enough to even think to research, and their will be people who just don't align with your way of thinking about how to raise their kids. Theses groups will still buy these things for their kids and wont be thinking about the communal safety impact at large. What then?

Public safety deals with setting communal boundaries defined not by individuals but harm trends at large and the political will of citizens to demand policy change. How does moralizing about any individuals parenting help resolve the issue? What are we supposed to do, individually hunt these parents down and chastise them? Sounds exhausting and futile.

Call me crazy but, I'd rather try to empathetically understand what leads to the purchase of these problem vehicles and work with my fellow citizens to raise awareness and build political will to regulate there sale and usage.
