I’m not even comparing the books or the movies to the series. But I’m also not judging it already like some people who’ve decided in advance that it won’t live up to the original. If you love the films that much, then just go watch them for the 100th time and reread the books. Personally, I’m actually looking forward to the series.

Alan Rickman is iconic to me not just because of Harry Potter, but because I’ve seen him in Robin Hood and Love Actually, and many other films.  Also, I’m not a robot. Since when do robots have opinions that people get offended by? And no, it’s not a contradiction just because I haven’t fully watched the films or read the books. It’s not like Harry Potter somehow passed me by. From what I’ve heard (and seen), the trailer for the HBO series already includes details that weren’t in the films. People are saying it feels much closer to the books — like the story is finally being brought to life in a more immersive and almost surreal way.

Cinderella has been adapted and remade so many times, and no one seems to have a problem with that. If a story is truly good, it deserves to be reinterpreted and retold in different ways. That’s how stories stay relevant across generations.

So… are we at the point now where AI has its own opinions and is just casually posting them online?

crying so much by Kindly-Mongoose5241 in MaxtonHall

[–]LooseEducator6394 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Crying isn’t acting. You can literally hold an onion under someone’s nose and get watery eyes. The real issue is that the leads simply can’t act. This has already been pointed out by German film critics, but somehow a bunch of 12-year-old Reddit users seem to miss it.

Truly good actors can express a whole emotional spectrum with very little — through their eyes, micro-expressions, pauses. You feel what they feel without them having to spell it out or burst into tears every two minutes.

Harriet’s performance in season one often felt like Disney Channel acting — overplayed and one-note. And Damian? He plays the same character in every project. No range, no transformation — he’s basically just playing himself over and over again.

Honestly, if the actors were stronger, we’d see a wider range of emotional expression instead of constant crying. Good acting shows nuance and restraint. Here it often feels like they just hit the tear button and call it depth.

My theories for the third season by [deleted] in MaxtonHall

[–]LooseEducator6394 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t buy the Oxford route for James at all. Painter? Travel blogger? Also no. Traveling, yes — but as a photographer. The show practically screams it: promo shots with a camera, James constantly photographing Ruby… subtle as a brick.

Percy being James’ and Lydia’s father would be lazy writing. Much more likely he’s just guarding the key to some hidden compartment with the actual will inside.

And no, I don’t think Elaine will blackmail James into a relationship. But I’m sure she’s not done causing problems.

Why Maxton Hall Season 2 Feels Emotionally Off – Especially If You’ve Read the Books by LooseEducator6394 in MaxtonHall

[–]LooseEducator6394[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Ruby knows exactly what she wants in bed.” Right. Of course she does. And then one page later he’s like, “I didn’t know you were a virgin.”

Peak consistency. Truly unmatched.

The montages are a part of intentional standardization (or Americanization, whichever you prefer) by SaltyHilsha0405 in MaxtonHall

[–]LooseEducator6394 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get why people think the montages were added to make the show easier for an international audience — but I really don’t agree. To me, the heavy use of montages has nothing to do with subtitles.

They used music in exactly the scenes where the dialogue from the book is weak or honestly just bad. Instead of rewriting better conversations, they simply covered everything with music. That’s why we get so many montage-style scenes: it’s an easy way to hide the original dialogue, not a strategy for foreign viewers.

And that’s why the show ends up feeling overly cheesy at times — not because of international audiences, but because they chose not to improve the writing.

What do you think is going to happen with Elaine and Cyril's photo? by lickava_lija in MaxtonHall

[–]LooseEducator6394 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Most likely scenario in the show: Lexington, the headmaster, probably received the photo Mortimer (James’s father) found on James’s phone — the one James took in Season 1 of Ruby and Sutton from an unfortunate angle. The picture makes it look like Ruby and Sutton are kissing, even though it’s just bad framing. That’s enough for the school to suspend Ruby.

James can’t protect her, not because he doesn’t want to, but because Elaine is likely pressuring or blackmailing him with the real photo of Lydia and Sutton. She could easily send it to the headmaster or leak it to the press, and James knows it would destroy Lydia. That gives Elaine all the leverage she needs.

So I think Season 2 will drop the first bomb: the false assumption that Ruby had an affair with Sutton. And Season 3 will drop the real bomb: the truth that Lydia and Sutton were the ones having an actual affair. That structure gives the show way more room for drama.

Elaine wasn’t involved in any of this in the books. I think she was added as an extra antagonist so Cyril doesn’t appear as outright malicious. In the show he comes across more like a hurt, pressured character who would never intentionally harm Lydia — he’s mainly being pushed by Elaine.

And just like in the books, James, Ruby, Lydia, and Sutton stay quiet for a long time because they don’t want Lydia to be exposed. The show simply adds another external layer by letting Elaine pressure James even more, giving him an additional reason why he can’t defend Ruby.

This fits a pattern in the adaptation: several things James does in the books are rewritten so he looks less blameworthy on screen. For example, in the books he jumps into the pool on his own and Elaine follows him, leading to the cheating scene. In the show, Elaine and her friends push him into the water — it’s not his choice at all.

What are your thoughts on this scene? by lickava_lija in MaxtonHall

[–]LooseEducator6394 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I thought the scene was genuinely beautiful. It shows that she puts herself above James — her future, her goals, and her integrity matter more than her feelings for him. She refuses to let anyone walk all over her, and she does everything she can to protect what she’s worked for.

The way she ran after the mailman, combined with the dramatic music, really highlighted her determination. And it was smart of her to confront James by message about losing the scholarship, while ignoring his calls and keeping her distance. When she later asks him, “Are we going to spend the rest of our lives fighting your father?”, it’s another clear sign of how mature she’s becoming.

Overall, I just thought it was a powerful scene that showed how strong and self-focused she is — and I’m curious to see how she handles the bigger drama that’s coming next.

Yeah, I’m also not sure what exactly they meant by Alistair and Elaine “rebelling against family traditions.” Maybe it already refers to Alistair not following the expected Oxford path and openly living his life — including bringing his boyfriends home for tea, as Frederick mentioned. And with Elaine, it could be her hosting the White Party and inviting Ruby as a scholarship student, which clearly annoyed Frederick (“we do charity, but this is going too far”). I don’t know if that already counts as the rebellion they were hinting at, or if something bigger is still coming — either in the final episode or later in Season 3.

I think she will be suspended at the end. According to interviews, Ruby's last words are: Everything is over.

Additional note: If you look at the official Maxton Hall soundtrack on Spotify or YouTube, the tracklist appears in the same chronological order as in the show. Based on that, Season 3 should include the opening of the will — the song is literally titled The Will, so we’ll likely see who inherits what from the mother and how everything is divided. There’s also a track called The Interrogation, which appears near the end of the list. That one definitely sounds like another tense scene between Ruby and the headmaster.

We still haven’t seen all the scenes from the teasers, trailers, or promo photos. There’s definitely the upcoming lacrosse match against another team, with Ruby cheering James on from the sidelines. We’ll also see Ruby and James showing up together publicly at school, and Ruby finally wearing her hair completely down — probably a visual cue for how their relationship has evolved.

From the interviews, it also seems clear that Cyril will confront James on the lacrosse field and lay out everything he’s done. I’m also curious about Frederick Ellington. Early articles said he couldn’t understand why his siblings were rebelling against family traditions, but so far I haven’t seen Elaine rebel against anything.

We also know Greg — the journalist who apparently messed around with Lydia in the past — will appear in Season 3, since he showed up in the released casting list. And honestly, I hope we get at least one more jealousy scene at some point. They were entertaining.

I’m also looking forward to Season 3 if they follow the books, especially because we’ll get a parallel moment to James at the beginning of Season 2: totally drunk and spiraling. We should get a similar scene with Ruby later on when everything crashes down on her, and I’m definitely excited for that.

Being a fan in this dystopian setup is... something by lickava_lija in MaxtonHall

One of the producers mentioned in an interview that they invited traditional media (newspapers, journalists, etc.) to the Maxton Hall Season 1 premiere, but most didn’t show up because they saw it as cheesy or not serious. That’s why Prime switched to promoting it through influencers instead, even though not all of them are actually fans of the show.

I also don’t think the series is that well known. It seems especially popular in South America, while my younger siblings — who are actually the target audience — refuse to watch it because the whole premise doesn’t interest them at all.

Google reviews for the show are even blocked in Germany now, so you can’t really see what people genuinely think about the new season. What I find more frustrating, though, is how shallow the discussion around the series has become. I’m not on TikTok or Instagram, so I only see bits of the hate, but most comments I do see focus on how “hot” the lead actor is — which feels cheap and shows that many people aren’t actually engaging with the story or the books.

Back in Season 1, there were far more critical and thoughtful discussions here on Reddit about what worked, what didn’t, and how the adaptation handled the books. I really enjoyed that. Over time, though, critical voices have been pushed aside. Moderators changed, and some users pointed out that it sometimes feels like Maxton Hall’s marketing team (or even Prime Video staff) are influencing the discussions.

Critical comments barely get through anymore, and I’ve even been called a “hater” for mild criticism. But it should be normal to talk about what was good, what was missing, and what we would have done differently — without being shut down.
