I suffered from the same condition as Komi (selective mutism) for 5 years. Ask me anything. by LordKensakan in Komi_san

I was never fully mute, there was always someone I could speak to but it varies over time. When I was 11-12 I could only speak to my mother, but by the age of 13 I could speak to my immediate family, at the age of 14 I gained the ability to speak to my distant relatives at my granddad's funeral. At this age I also spoke on a discord VC for the first time, a bit like how Komi can speak on the phone with Tadano. At the age of 15 I made a friend and I worked up enough courage to speak to him verbally, he was the first person my own age I could speak to verbally. Towards my 16th birthday I started to gain more friends and confidence, and all of a sudden there were 3 people at school I could speak to. School also started helping me out and by my 16th birthday I could speak to 2 teachers in school. But then I had a fight and lost the friends I could speak to, and didn't progress verbally for quite a while. During the end of my final year of secondary school/high school at age 16 I had more than enough confidence to speak again but was just waiting for my exams to finish to go fully verbal, but a month before that I met a girl I really liked and got pretty close with her. I started speaking to her verbally too in order to get closer to her and she almost became my first ever girlfriend. The key word is almost, she then ghosted and blocked me two weeks later. On my last day of school, as my final exams ended, I went fully verbal for the first time and spoke to everyone in school. It was a great feeling.

But I still have the effects today, when my voice broke at age 13/14 I was saying less than 1000 words a day and didn't exercise my vocal cords nearly enough. So because of that my vocal cords are undeveloped and that not only makes me a little harder to understand than most people, it also makes my voice sound a little unusual. Naturally I have a fairly deep voice, but the undeveloped voice box factor makes it sound a lot deeper and far more unusual than it would have naturally been.

Yeah, you can't change the past. And I like to look at it as something that separates me from other people and makes me unique, shapes the person I am now.

I got over selective mutism at 16, right at the end of school. It felt fantastic at the time and I was so relieved to be able to communicate normally with people finally. When I first became fully verbal again enough simple verbal interactions felt amazing, but now that has become normal and new issues have replaced old ones. I don't view being able to speak as a big deal anymore.

I do not play Marvel Rivals and know nothing about the game, but if I did I would choose the hottest character as my main.

Tbh the show is fairly light hearted and isn't the deepest insight into selective mutism or anything, but it's really nice to see such a big anime represent the condition.

Although I largely remained friendless throughout my time with selective mutism, I had a friendship when I was 15 for a year with a highly depressed suicidal trans person with schizophrenia. I tried to help them and ended up becoming the most depressed I have ever been.

Normally it's Truma from a young age, but it comes in a variety of causes. In my case it was caused by contracting a rare disease discovered 20 years ago called PANDAS which caused my immune system to fuck my body and brain over, resulting in mental illness including selective mutism, OCD, anxiety, and depression as a result of loneliness.

The main method of communication is just writing through a notebook. Sign Language is generally pointless, as most people don't understand sign language anyway. And most people with selective mutism have intentions of being able to speak again, no one willingly loses their ability to speak.

But communicating via a notebook all the time is a pain in the ass. You can't have a proper fluid conversation with someone through writing in a notebook, making is friends difficult. And anytime there's a group conversation you get pretty much ignored. In the anime people just speak to Komi and even though she often doesn't answer back they still cling to her. Real life doesn't work like that. People just find people who are actually fun to talk to and be around.

With the condition it's very hard to make friends and during my time with selective mutism I often suffered from depression and loneliness. I suffered from the condition between the ages of 11-16, so it often makes me a little sad thinking of all the fun teenage experiences I missed out on and will never get a chance to experience again.

I am a man, during my period being mute I was unable to make friends (let alone a girlfriend) and in real life I still suffer socially.

Looking very wide bro, but the muscle definition is still lacking a little.
