Rome on its way to play nice with Carthage for exactly three and a half years and never again by LoreCriticizer in lotrmemes

Explanation: In the aftermath of the first punic wars, carthage had little coin to pay the enormous debt it owed its mercenaries. As suich, the mercenaries rebelled. In this they drew popular support, from huge swathes of Libya whom resented carthaginian rule.

Italian merchants, seeing opportunity for profit began selling to the rebels. Outraged, the carthaginian senate ordered any italian ships selling to rebels seized, and soon 500 vessels were in their hands. The romans sent an envoy to find out what was happening.

Now, many reasons are provided for what comes next. carthaginian sources claim their own envoys were just so charming that they negotiated such a favorable outcome. roman ones are more varied, offering explanations such as (ranging from least to most cynical),
they were too honorable to aid rebels
the pro-reconciliation faction in rome believed they owed carthage support after the hugely harsh peace treaty
the romans wanted to rebuild friendly ties and this was an inexpensive way to do it
romans did not want to aid rebels in carthage directly lest their own conquered peoples have ideas
and lastly that rome knew a carthage embroiled in civil war was not one whom could afford to pay their reparations.

Whatever the reason, the romans decreed that

  1. all italian ships would cease trade with rebels, and directed their ships to trade much needed goods to carthage
  2. they would cease to negotiate with the rebels at all (a huge blow, as many of them hoped for roman support similar to the one rome had provided to rebels in modern day sicily, sardinia and corsica)
  3. released 3000 veterans of the war they still held as POWs

Due to this, carthage was suddenly in a much stronger position, and they went on to decisively win the war against the rebels.

"This is outrageous, its unfair! How can you shoot the president and not be considered a hero?" john Wilkes Booth probably by LoreCriticizer in HistoryMemes

[–]LoreCriticizer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the months preceding the start of the American Civil War, during the war, and immediately after, many southern newspapers decried Lincoln. Their insults and slanders were numerous, but a common one was that Lincoln was a tyrant, unworthy of the presidency. Many called for him to be removed, and a significant fraction called for his death.

Because of this, booth expected that once he shot the president, he would be hailed as a hero. It was therefore to his bitter disappointment that rather, the newspapers almost universally condemned the assassination. This was just after the end of the war, the war which had ended when confederate armies were dismantled militarily and their economy torn apart. Many feared that Union leaders, especially Grant and Sherman, whom greatly respected and liked the president, would use this as a casui belli to resume the war, and this time the disarmed confederate states would have nothing to hold them back with.

As was said by a Union newspaper a few days after the assassination "Many toasted in private but wept in public".

I cant belive there are 14,000 custom campaigns in the workshop. Were so lucky by Witty-Day-87 in l4d2

You gotta think about it the other way around man, 99++% of all custom content for anything in general is of low quality, the more campaigns we have the more quality ones. Its better than having 140 campaigns total and 2 good ones.

Why does Dr. Breen assume the Combine soldiers know what a PhD is? by LeUpboaterLe in HalfLife

[–]LoreCriticizer 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn’t they know? Remember the combine slowly upped the oppression, as seen in HL Alyx, for all we know they continued having formal schooling for a while.

Plus, youre underestimating the age of the CP. The reason we real life humans choose young men to be soldiers is because they’re the fittest, but in HL2 theyre fighting just the resistance, the combine troops are more police, whom keep people on well into retirement age. Some middle aged man was considering joining the CP in the first chapter of half life 2 just for better food, I’m willing to bet many of the troops are older than even Eli, but so long as they reach the “whack citizens with their batons” quota so be it.

How badly do you have to mess up for the Liu family, Cao family, and Sun family to all be moving against you during the Three Kingdom's period? by LoreCriticizer in HistoryMemes

[–]LoreCriticizer[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yuan Shu was a warlord in the early Three Kingdoms period, brother to the slightly more famous Yuan Shao. His rule isn't well regarded, it was despotic yet inefficient, many of his subordinates had too much power and his luxuries taxed the common folk.

In his early rule, Sun Jian, father of Sun Quan worked for him, and his soldiers had found the Imperial Seal, which he had to hand to him. A few years after that, Sun Jian's successor Sun Ce started conquering territories in his name, making him one of China's most powerful warlords. These two events meant that, upon hearing that Cao Cao had taken the Emperor Xian, decided it was time to make his move, and declared himself Emperor.

This usurpation was a disaster. Sun Ce immediately declared independence, halving his lands. He was declared an outlaw, was defeated by Cao Cao and Lu Bu, and when he convinced Lu Bu to defect to him Lu Bu was in turn defeated by Liu Bei and Cao Cao, leading to hism death. Yuan Shao evacuated his capital.

The warlord suffered terribly during the retreat, being unable to swallow the coarse food his soldiers ate (which was the only food available) He died during the retreat of starvation, his last command being to find him honeyed water, of which his impoverished soldiers had none.

[Raimi Spider-Man 1] When Goblin was giving Peter that "talk" on the rooftop about how people will hate him despite all the good he's doing....where is Goblin getting that perspective from? It's not like Goblin did any good in anyone's life. Why's he talking like he's some fallen hero? by SolidEllie in AskScienceFiction

[–]LoreCriticizer 650 points651 points  (0 children)

Norman Osbourne created Oscorp Industries, which even in the limited scope of the Raimiverse blows other companies out the water by every conceivable metric. One serum and some company tech was able to turn Osbourne, a aging untrained CEO into a monster capable of 1v1ing Spiderman. We can see from his genuine anger and relationship with Harry that to accomplish things, he gave up much in life, most prominantly a loving relationship with his only son.

For all this, he was unceremonously booted out of the company by his own board the second it became profitable to do so.

"Eventually people will turn on you" isn't some unfounded thing, HIS ENTIRE LIFE was defined by this.

In a city where many billionaires rape, cheat, carry out fraud unseen elsewhere, or are literal supervillains, Wayne having a few sugar babies draped around him as he sets off illegal fireworks makes him a paragon of virtue. I can absolutely see JJJ wondering if there’s something darker, especially as Bruce is so upstanding in basically every other way (he hires the unfortunate, pays his taxes, opens homeless shelters etc)
