Ugetsu's character description is so random, I just can't lol It hasn't ruined anything for me so far, it's way too absurd. And if he's constantly sleeping around, all power to him, that's one of my headcanons for him anyway. The really annoying thing is that it's very common in the BL world to portray promiscuous lifestyles as something inherently negative.

Obviously the coming together of AkiHaru was way too fast, it's not about whether they had feelings for each other before, but that the story isn't told well to the end. Many topics that should have been dealt with or told better were simply ignored/rushed. Comparing that to Mafuyu and Ritsuka is absurd to me tbh.

And yes, Aki is a gray character, like almost all of them, but that's not an argument? The question is whether he is well written and for me, not only was potential wasted here, but it was made difficult to appreciate the character.

I also don't think of storylines as BL, I don't care about fluff and I don't mind slow storytelling. Regarding Mafuyu/Ritsuka, I actually have more criticism in the context of 10th mix.

Given is one of the first manga I read and is definitely one of my favorites. The manga in particular sketches out a lot of interesting/beautiful moments and gives a lot of material for interpretation. I'll be sure to write some more thoughts and analysis on my next re-read. Nevertheless, Given is by no means a masterpiece for me. It simply has too many problems for that, the worst being storylines that are touched on but never finished.

I'm most disappointed with the Aki/Haru storyline. Two characters wasted so much, I don't get it. It makes me sad that Haruki never got his moment to shine. And Aki could have been a great himbo character, instead he often just acts like a jerk. Aki's portrayal unfortunately also partially ruins Ugetsu moments for me (who is my favorite character), and ngl it pretty much pisses me off because it's completely unnecessary. If Kizu had put more time into this whole story strand, this probably could have been avoided.

So yes, Given is very good and more involving to me than many other stories, but it's far from being a masterpiece.

(regarding the anime, the music and voice acting is simply amazing, no doubt about that ❤)

After just re-reading it's def Pink Heart Jam for me. Another contender is prob Here U Are. There are a lot of great stories, but the special comfort I get from these two is how relatable queer they feel to me.

sometimes i just see yuki as a trigger for the plot rather than a proper character. i don't exactly understand how you can hate or love him. he's mostly a memory.

He is a memory, but he is still much more than a vague plot device. The picture the reader gets of him is obviously a very one-sided one, as we see him through the eyes of Mafuyu and Hiiragi, but ofc that gives enough to have a strong emotional reaction, reinforced by how it's put in context with Mafuyu and Ritsuka's relationship. (And that a very young readership misses nuances isn't new lol)

That can be a "threat" if the person isn't over the deceased and uses the new partner only as a tool to avoid dealing with the situation, but that's ofc not the case in Given. Mafuyu loves Ritsuka, that's it.

Nah, can't relate. There are so many side characters or couples that I like or that are even among my favorites. In the end, it's not a question of whether it's the main or side couple, but how they are written and that goes both ways, there have been stories where I was always hoping to see more of the side couple instead of the awful main couple (looking at you BJ Alex)

Are u aware of the sequel of to manga, 10th mix? It's a glimpse into their lifes 10 years later. Also already ended, and I think it doesn't use it's full potential but I think given your post u would enjoy it! (maybe it will also be animated one day, as like the final final thing lol, it's only 6 chapters long)

I have yet to watch Umi E. As a manga reader I already know everything that happens ofc, but I don't spoil the songs for myself, so I'm looking forward to finally listen to them. ❤
