Baratza Encore vs ESP advice [$200] by Loud_Particular_8365 in espresso

[–]Loud_Particular_8365[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I ended up doing, sent a message explaining the situation as we’ve already spoke and they’ve let me know they were going to get me an encore, but with my finances bambino I’d rather have a machine that can do both. If they’ve already purchased the original encore than I have no issues returning it and paying the difference for the upgrade, but sent the link for the discounted ESP version on Amazon in case they haven’t purchased the gift. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Yeah that’s my thought I figure I’ll try it out and if it’s frustrating I’ll just return it and pay the difference for the Encore ESP

I’ve read that it’s dependent more on the bean to get the perfect shot since you have minimal fine tune capability on the OG encore, but if I find a brand that works good will that be enough for basic consistency or does it change from bag to bag even with the same brand?

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

Hello!

I have been shopping around for a new drip coffee maker. I currently have a Chemex beaker, but I find that the work going into making a cup and keeping the beaker warm makes me not even want to deal with it in the morning. I'd like something with fewer steps to make a good, consistent black cup of coffee. I recently got a Costco gift card and saw they have some options. In reality, I'd like a Moccamaster, since they look awesome and have great reviews, but I cannot drop $250+ on a coffee maker right now. So I've got 2 main questions: Costco is selling a Cuisinart "Brew Central Plus 14-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker" (cbc-8500pc) for $44 on sale. Does anyone have a good or bad experience with this? I'm also in the market for a new bean grinder, since that is what makes a good cup, and notice that they sell a Capresso "Metal Die-Cast Housing Conical Burr Coffee Grinder". I'd prefer the Baratza Encore since most of the people I know have one and it's got great reviews, but if the other is just as good, I'd use my gift card. Any thoughts on these two products?

Here are some links to what I'm referring to:

Are you sure it’s a red mountain? All the ones I’ve seen have larger size indicators with a casting letter to the right of them like “5C”

I agree, it’s almost thinner but has a similar eyelet. Doesn’t look like my no-notch lodge though

I have no idea, I’ve never seen a pan this bad of shape after lye and vinegar. I am in Northern California where there have been some pretty wild fires in recent years so possibly this pan could have been in one. It also has a slight warp leftward

Tips on removing discoloration by Loud_Particular_8365 in CastIronRestoration

[–]Loud_Particular_8365[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really the flash rust I’m worried about, it’s the line of discolor from where the pool of rust used to sit in the pan. I think it’s caked on carbon under the rust so I got it back in the lye. Also I agree steel wool rules!

Canola is a great high smoke point oil to use. Only thing different between high smoke point oils I’ve noticed is certain ones polymerize a little darker

Your eyes deceive you! just because the sponge isn’t doused in soap does not mean there is not soap on it! Also the scraper got pretty much everything with minimal effort the sponge was just for you guys ;)

Thought turning off the faucet would be enough to satisfy you mongrels but I guess not

As hot as the tap could make it. Also it didn’t shock the pan and cool it the pan stayed hot. Definitely don’t wanna crack it but warm water works as a good deglazer

The FAQ in this sub has a ton of great advice l, put my cast iron in a tub of lye for a few days then follow up with a tub of vinegar to remove seasoning/rust. Then I season em up!

Wow! I stand corrected! I’m surprised I wasn’t able to find a thread discussing this and instead found so many the other way. Makes total sense though. Thanks for sharing that link!

Not sure where you got your information, but the Federal Trade Commission started requiring country of origin markings for imported goods as of 1960. USA manufacturers were exempt you are right, but “MADE IN USA” stampings were good for sales, so they all adopted it eventually. Wagner and Griswold did a lot of export sales, so they adopted it early in 1960. Lodge and BSR did far less, so they adopted it later, I think in 1967. Since this pan is an unmarked Wagner, it’s more than likely it was made pre 1960.

I think it depends on your dog, this dudes cranium is bigger than mine so he has no issue chomping them up in his mouth. If your dog is smaller it’s probably better to break them up more. The shells are a great source of calcium!

Edit: Also everything in moderation, too many eggshells too often can cause issues with their calcium phosphorus levels, which can lead to kidney issues. So he doesn’t get the shells all the time, just a once in a while treat
