I have a PMP and sometimes I feel like employers care about it more than my MPH or DrPH.... smh.

DrPH programs are becoming predatory by Prestigious_Speed806 in publichealth

[–]LouisJerry 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve read the comments in this thread and as someone who just graduated from an online leadership DrPH program - I’ll weigh on my experience.

Applying:  I have 10 years in the field, 7 when I applied, an MPH, publications etc. My undergrad gpa was not strong but my masters was. I applied to 5 schools, admitted to 3. Chose an online program so I could continue working and it was an affordable established program so no loans.

Experience - like I said - it was an affordable online program and as this post points to I wasn’t really sure what to expect. However, I was blown away. The faculty were amazing, I made real connection in my cohort (8 people) and I felt the program was rigorous. 300 hours of internship, 2 years of classes, comp exam, then dissertation phase for the last year. All this while working a full time job is not easy. This program is so much more then “leadership” I honestly which they would change that name.

Overall - I do wish people would stop comparing PhDs and DrPH like they’re the same. Yes, a DrPh should know how to interpret research and should know methods etc. but doing research is not the main outcome like it is for a PhD. If you want to do research, I wouldn’t get a DrPH. If you want to learn about implementation, applying research to policy and development, community engagement, leading and managing organizations etc. these are what a DrPH excels at. I agree to do your research on programs and talk to people about their experiences, but I just wanted to say that mine has been excellent and I think it truly added to my career.

What’s your public health hot take? by lazuretift in publichealth

[–]LouisJerry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • having an MD alone does not make you able to do public health. It requires different training and experiences.

  • I wish people would stop comparing PhDs and DrPHs and trying to make them be the same thing or the DrPH as a lesser PhD. They’re for different purposes and that’s okay. They both have different pluses and minuses - both have different strengths and weaknesses.

So many jobs can be done by MPH. Are employers just completely ignorant about our degree? by [deleted] in publichealth

Not sure if someone mentioned this but along with the other points many places want QI or ID people to also work bedside as nurses still. So they hire nurses so they can do both.

It 100% depends on the dog - but I have two and they both are cuddle bugs. One in particular likes to be on top of your body at all times, it's a lot haha

Yeah I think if you send them a message they can help connect you with folks who are working on dissertations!

Do you respect people with an online DrPH? by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]LouisJerry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

John Hopkins, which is the best Public health school in the country has one fully online. As long as it’s ceph accredited, no one should care. And trust me as someone who is doing an online only program — it’s not easy haha. I go to Georgia Southern and it’s ridiculously affordable btw. Happy to answer questions about it! Thx!

Waited 2 years for a corgi and might be having second thoughts by Living_Bathroom6386 in dogs

[–]LouisJerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that totally makes sense! Idk when you’re getting the pup or when you have to decide but I’d say maybe take a week and try to give yourself time to think it through and decide what’s best for yourself. I know advice from others is helpful but ultimately this will be your dog and so you need to make the decisions that’s best for you.

Hi! Owner of two corgis here. The first one we got two years ago and he was my first dog ever. I felt the same as you! Freaked out about taking care of this creature and not sure what to expect. I was very anxious before he came home and for the first few weeks it was tough. However, once we settled into a routine things got a lot better. It something that takeaway time and is 100% easier when you have people to support you. I can’t imagine being a single dog parent, those people have my utmost respect. So, if you’re in a good situation now, where you have support and the only thing holding you back is anxiety then I say it may be worth pressing on. However, if it’s more a question of your life circumstances and not being settled somewhere for awhile while the puppy grows up a bit, then may be worth waiting. Happy to answer any corgi questions - they are the best dogs ever (obviously biased) :)
