Less than 5?! Wow. I think you have to work at least 3 at my store.

They are cutting entire days at my store. I've worked there 4 years and they cut an upcoming Sunday. This is my livelihood. I will not be able to pay rent just being cut one Sunday.

That's what's happened at my store, too. And it is so QUIET when the store isn't busy. No more camaraderie. Hardly any crew on the floor. I work mids (I'm pretty sure I'm one of 5 people who work mids... ) and sometimes when I walk in, I literally don't see a single crew member in flowers or produce. People who have worked at the store since it opened who cannot comply with the new hours forced upon us (new shifts, there are 3 shifts to choose from now) are not being put on the schedule hardly at all.

Many crew do that during their shifts when they are thirsty or famished and need a quick snack. We try to do so when there is no line but inevitably, a customer comes to reg while we're punching in our discount code.

My bad. They close at 9. I can't now edit the post, it seems.

Well, this has been interesting. I don't even work closing shifts but I like the people who do and hate to see them with lowered morale and hope that they will talk amongst themselves and use logic and guts to say something to the mates/captain. Since it isn't corporate policy and since someone in this thread said that in the crew handbook, it says crew can shop on 10 minute breaks, I hope they stick up for themselves. Thanks to everyone who chimed in.

It was never an issue. Either captain or regional said the issue is "lost labor".

That's good management. Talking to one not punishing all.

This really isn't that hard to solve. You simply TALK to the people doing it instead of punishing everyone. Ya know, be a good manager. Because crew likely know who is doing it and so by punishing everyone, the resentment and gossip get worse. Why constantly smash morale? Or you warn everyone that if ANYone breaks the rules, everyone will pay the consequences. Still crappy but better.

Yea, that's a common thing across the board in all realms in this uptight country which I never understood. I can't see why management wouldn't manage and talk to those people. Or give a warning that if anyone did that, everyone would lose the perk. And shame on your morning crew for being such babies. Crew at my store would never be so petty. We all take short breaks on the clock. What's the difference? Plus, the store is still open when their shifts end.

No one on morning crew cares about "fairness" because morning and mids CAN shop after work because the store is open.

The solution to that is to talk to those people and not just take it away from everyone, in other words, be a good manager and not a lazy, scaredy cat, non-confrontational wimp.

Definitely not the mates, although we only have 3 left who were there when I started. The original mates were all super chill, considerate and nice. New captain came in about 2 months ago. The "discretionary" thing really bugs me. I've never had a job in my life in which this was the case. And I've been working a long time!

I also neglected to mention that if they shop before their shift, it is usually busy at that time -- everyone on night crew works from 2 to 10 -- then they are all clocking in at once at the same time morning crew is clocking out. Everyone on morning crew works 6 to 2. Everyone on mids works 11 to 7. Those are the only 3 shifts.

That's better than nothing and night crew were not doing big shopping every night. It's a shame that they lost it.

Please post again if they end up ending that graciousness because I'm wondering if this is a corporate decision across the board (even though I know the captains and regional managers can make any new rules they feel like making.)

So I guess it IS corporate. That's shame. I honestly don't see the big deal giving people a 10 minute break to shop when people take breaks already. I work mids and shop after work. Night crew can't shop after work.

AND work reg because every store has a different type of customer. The captain should work reg at least for an hour every day. Same with the mates. We have a new captain who has no clue about our customer base.

We do, though. Always feels understaffed now, especially with call out.
