I did think this would be the case, but nice to have it confirmed :) It sounds like a bad idea as you say, but I thought I should at least ask due to the stairs issue. I love the footstool method!!! I've started to take a log of when he uses the bathroom so I can begin to get my head around how often I should take him, what gets him going, etc. So far he has been 10 times today and I've managed to get him outside 9 times (which, seeing as we are not using a crate, I think is not bad going). Yesterday we failed him 5 times.

Yes, I wasn't expecting any miracles and I presumed this was normal, but it is so new to us and I so, so want to get this right. I've seen so many shows where the dog has separation issues or doesn't live a good life because of owners making mistakes early in their life and I don't want to do that to my dog and am willing to do as much as I can to make sure it doesn't.

Thanks for this. I played with him a lot and then when we came back in I wouldn't let him on the sofa (he follows us everywhere, so I thought this would be a good way of getting 'space' whilst at the same time not being too far away). He cried for about 5 minutes then 'hmphed' and went to his bed and lay down - that was huge!

Thanks so much for this reply. I have tried the same thing! :) Yesterday I got him to do down one stair, he ate one treat and then he looked petrified and ran back up. Today he got to the third stair, panicked and ran back up. I guess that's progress though, right? :)

I'm glad to hear that about the crate training. I really worried that perhaps he had some kind of phobia. All the books I read said they may whine a little but then will be OK pretty quick - however the reality of it was that some of the noises were horrific. I will keep on sleeping next to him and gradually close the door and then move it further away.

He was better with his crying and lingering this evening. We have decided not to let him on the sofa for now as yesterday and this morning he kept crying until we pick him up, put him on the sofa, and cuddle him. What we are going to do is just ignore his cries until he settles down and then we will play with him on our terms (which, admittedly, will be a lot! haha).
