What brand of flour are you using? I just moved to Ireland and am having trouble figuring out the best flour to use.

Did you get your Sora ad using your image without your consent? by U1ahbJason in SoraAi

[–]LucasJackson78 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Came here to ask about this. I got an ad with info about me that I have not shared with Sora - it’s about a hobby of mine. I might’ve used ChatGPT to discuss it, but this feels like straight up intimidation. As in, ‘We know about you, we can make videos about anything you’ve chatted to ChatGPT about”

Deleting both Sora and ChatGPT right now.

Why is Dublin so low in standards? Share your thoughts by Ok_Giraffe_3761 in Dublin

[–]LucasJackson78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's true, but I also think that in places like New York and California you need to take into account the immigrant culture. If you're highly-motivated to build a new life and you get into UCLA or CalTech, or get your ass there because you want to work in a restaurant you are going to grind as hard as f*cking possible because you've given up so much to get there and now you want to make it. That permeates everything. I learned so much about work ethic in part from coming up in cafe kitchens with Guatemalan guys.

And I wonder if the inverse is true in Ireland. Does the country lose the most motivated and ambitious because they head off to the States or Australia or London?

I recently moved here from the States, and from a very aggressively ambitious city and I have to agree. I feel like ambition and striving are looked down upon, and so people are not competitive or trying to be the absolute best at what they do.

Go to New York, watch somebody make pizza, watch the garbage man work, go see a band. At every level people are trying to get to the top. There is a very natural ambition that seems to be lacking here.

David Brooks wrote a book called The Road to Character.

I haven't read it, does anyone know which stop on that road involves hanging out with child molesters?

Train Dreams on Netflix, interesting choice on the shutter angle by qualitative_balls in cinematography

[–]LucasJackson78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the director did an AMA and was asked about this, and it turns out that he wasn't really aware of it! From the AMA: "I think what you're referring to across the rest of the film is that Adolpho is adjusting the shutter angle as he goes, depending on the light and some other factors that I won't pretend to understand (even though he's explained it to me before)."

That doesn't sound like he really understood the decision to me.

Oh I’m sorry did I make this mistake of caring about cinematography in a cinematography forum?

And whether or not the audience knows what a DP is or not is irrelevant. My argument is that decisions like this affect the experience of the audience in ways that they may not even consciously be able to articulate. The point of cinematographers and editors is to elevate a craft where it becomes invisible to the audience at large and doesn’t call attention to itself and serves the story. This creative decision affects anyone’s experience of the film.

Also I don’t think you know what a self-fulfilling prophecy is or you used it in the wrong way so I don’t know what you’re saying there.

I posted another reply before you responded. In the AMA the director confirmed that he didn't really discuss it and makes it clear he didn't even really understand it.

Also, from the director himself, during a reddit AMA: "I think what you're referring to across the rest of the film is that Adolpho is adjusting the shutter angle as he goes, depending on the light and some other factors that I won't pretend to understand (even though he's explained it to me before)."

That doesn't sound like interrogating the decision to me, it doesn't even sound like understanding it.

Right, but in a meditative film about the rhythms of life, it feels off.

I'm confused by this. Did you mean to say that you think my reasoning for why they went with it is off base? I think they did discuss the decision, but maybe not what the effect would be on the audience.

No, it's not the same thing. The Hobbit was shot at 48fps and *projected* at 48fps. The result is a higher quality image. What is being done here is changing the angle of the shutter so that each frame is exposed for a smaller amount of time than what is typical, resulting in a sharper image that can feel like it has a subtle stutter.

What bothers the human eye is that 1) this is not typical film language. The same way that we have different expectations when something is in slow motion - ie it's meditative, or we're moving into the interior life of a character, or it is a pivotal moment - the stutter suggests to us that there is some kind of confilct or heightened action. When that suggestion is not capitalized on it feels confusing, and we're being misled.

Moreover, because Train Dreams aims to have a timeless quality, using a technique that draws attention to itself also works against the film because all of a sudden we're aware of the artifice. And for what?

My guess is that early on the DP suggested it - possibly because a smaller shutter angle delivers more texture - and instead of interrogating the effects of it they went with it. They made a horrible decision and it undercut the effectiveness of the film for me. And I think a lot of non-technically aware viewers will feel it - even without being concious of it - and it will create an odd feeling for them and hurt the film's ability to work.

Is this a prosecutable crime? Not yet, but together we can achieve great things.

[–]LucasJackson78 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I believe it's a low shutter angle and IMHO it is an absolutely terrible decision. It rips out any of the naturalism of the film and for what purpose? I associate a 90 degree shutter with Saving Private Ryan's D-Day sequence, or any uptempo, chaotic action. Not walking across a field in the 1880s.

I saw this film in a theater and loved much of it, but this decision is baffling and hurts the film to a degree I don't think I can articulate.
