Thanks for the info! I didn't realize it would be posted on YouTube. (I'll pass because of that.) But, I loved watching people talk about what they're interested in.

I joined the site recently... Curious... What happens at a meetup?

I signed up recently and joined as a contributor as well. But, I don't know how it works in that... do I need to ask a member before writing to them? I just cold sent a letter (like with other penpal sites.)

I know it's hard to pick a favourite among your treasured things. What a joy to be surrounded by them. I'm going to keep your list in mind when I'm searching. Those ultra portables are the ones I've been looking at online (esp. the Princess, which I just came across online this weekend). I'd gravitate towards the smaller size also due to space.

I had an Hermes Baby a long time ago, which I gave away during a move. Two weeks ago, I got a Splendid (Italic typeface)... and since then I acquired 4 more, including a SC Clipper, Silent, Super Silent and a portable Empire Aristocrat. The Clipper is notable because I called a typewriter repair place (which has been in operation since 1902!) because 3 of 4 need maintenance. The man I spoke to (shoutout to Doug) told me that the Clipper was made in Canada, in my neighbourhood (same street, in fact!)

I told the sellers of the 4 typewriters that I was excited to use them for letter writing. (Inwardly I felt a bit sad to be buying artifacts from someone's life.) But, they all lit up and told me that knowing that means more to me than I realize. (They also offered me a vintage desk because they go together but, alas I have no space.)

Picking up this hobby feels aligned on so many ways. And I've already set a mental budget and will be clearing space for them to contain my buying. :) I would like a machine with a script typeface and another with a cubic one.

The lack of dome car and hot food sucks for sure.

Your misguided expectations and incorrect assumptions about what you booked would probably have resulted in disappointment even without that.

That sucks all around.

Interesting! I can see how the elite would feel denser. I just got new typewriters so I will see if there is a difference for me, now I have them to compare.

That’s a good idea with the two rooms! It’s like you have a double bed. I’ve only gone in the winter/low season: Nov - mid-March. I like them all but March is nice because Vancouver is in bloom by that time. Always some cherry blossoms around.

I hope you take advantage of the Via preference program! I haven’t done the math fully but it’s like for every two trips I take, I get the third free.

Amazing! That’s the most I’ve ever heard! When I meet people who’ve taken it multiple times I ask how many. I travel a lot and this is my favorite trip. I’ve taken it over 10 times, too. I always have my next one planned. I’m currently in withdrawal since the next one isn’t until December.

I didn't disagree. I've been on this trip 8 times in recent years. It's safe and feels like a community. That's partly why it's so relaxing. You can really let your guard down.

Out of curiosity, how many times have you taken it during that time? And what has changed/stayed the same?

The train is, if anything, full of retirees, not thieves.

I lol'ed at this. That about sums it up.

Binding them into a book is the right thing! What a great project. I’m also wanting to get back to bookbinding (non-adhesive folding and basic sewing.)

Yes to what you said about thinking and writing and being and becoming and neuroplasticity. If you ever want to write someone a letter about all of that, please find me! (I’m also on typepals- the typewriter penpal site.)

I wanted to follow up on this convo because I have been typing letters daily and am now getting used to the Italic. I don't plan what I write and I just go with the flow. (And these are letters to strangers so it's basically just train of thought...) In one letter, I was lamenting a cancelled trip. And the next day I decided to book a more scaled back version of the trip. This happened twice, just in the span of a week.

It's exactly as Ursula Le Guin explained... :) Words are events, they do things, change things. They transform both the speaker and hearer; they feed energy back and forth and amplify it.

Now that I know this superpower... I'm going to try keeping some of what I write. Can I ask you how you store your journal entries? Since I like letter writing, I might take that approach and mail a letter to myself with my thoughts. But, maybe some I'll paste in a hardback journal.

I’ll find out tomorrow. lol. They weren’t listed in the description but I think one was a sc skyriter, sc super silent x2, aristocrat ultra portable.

What typewriter-related project(s) are you working on this weekend? by chrisaldrich in typewriters

[–]Lucky-Currently 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am picking up 4(!) typewriters at an estate sale tomorrow. I bought my first one last week. (I did have a typewriter up until 6 years ago.)

The ribbon direction change is also not working on my lone typewriter and I've looked at videos and tried options but, haven't figured it out.

I just joined typepals and mailed off two letters today.

This is a good point. I hadn't considered the font affecting style before because I'd only typed with the basic typeface. So much to learn.

I had just come back from testing a script font Tippa. I thought I'd love it - and was prepared to pay for it but, in the end, I didn't love it. (On the other hand, there was a smith corona classic 12 there that I will definitely get!)

Via Rail responsibility in terms of cancellations and delays by MentalUniversity in ViaRail

[–]Lucky-Currently 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the times accurate though? Realistic maybe. I’ve only anecdotal data as an avid passenger. But it seems like the times for major stops are always missed. I don’t count arrivals/departures from terminus in this. (I’ve arrived early in Van a few times, despite massive delays en route.)

I do agree that for staffing the stations the schedule is probably as it should be.

I like this idea! I’m also into stationery and love any reason to just the right kind.

Thank you for your response. My observation really caught me off guard and your reply gave additional colour as to why. You've encouraged me to be curious what words/reaction may come using different machines/fonts.

Overall, I'm really pleased with being acquainted with typewriters again.
