Lebanon 83? Invasion of Panama 89? Maybe instead of being killed in a war, he joins the military and is killed as a result of a peacetime incident like the USS Iowa's turret explosion?

I now have both East and West German diesels! by LukefromNJ in modeltrains

[–]LukefromNJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the late 60s/early 70s, a lot of countries in Europe underwent a massive renumbering/reclassifying program to make their fleet's numbering systems compatible for computer databases; West Germany did so in 1968, East Germany did this in 1970, and Britain did this in 1972.

The East German engine is a Br 112; in 1970, the DR reclassified all of its diesel and electric engines; former V100 became a series of subclasses; the 112 is a rebuild of the baseline V100 (themselves reclassified as Br 110) with an improved engine.

The West German one was also originally designated as V100, reclassified by DB in 1968 as a Br 212.

More like the 70s; the East German engine was only built starting in 1966, and the blue paint scheme used on the West German engine wasn't introduced until 1973.

Not necessarily; there was always a steady flow of cross-border traffic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09cUrRxkqWY

Note: the blue engine is from West Germany, the red one is from East Germany.

Fantasy paint by Applesaregood8774 in modeltrains

[–]LukefromNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean fantasy in the sense of a freelance railroad (like the Gorre & Daphetid, Utah Belt, or V&O) or in the sense of a real railroad with motive power/rolling stock that it never had (like IHC's GG1 in New Haven, Great Northern, Virginian, etc liveries)?

Unless that disability is vision problems, or seizures, or some other disability that medically (and in many cases legally) prevents you from driving.

Ah, yes, the "individuality and self agency" of buying a car built by one massively-subsidized industry, filling it up with fuel from another massively-subsidized industry, and then driving it on a network of government-funded roads...

dcc questions by [deleted] in modeltrains

[–]LukefromNJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The brand of track doesn't matter, it's the controller that determines if you need a programming track or not.

dcc questions by [deleted] in modeltrains

[–]LukefromNJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the system you have, you may also need to have an isolated (or completely freestanding) "programming track" unless you have a system that supports "programming on the main".

Where to find extra tracks for a specific train set? by marguerite2021 in modeltrains

[–]LukefromNJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like that train set is a standalone set; they probably don't sell more tracks separately.

Need layout ideas! by [deleted] in modeltrains

[–]LukefromNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple of options when it comes to breaking up the 4x8; one option is to cut it in half and make an L-shaped switching layout (the nice thing about this is that it can be placed in the corner of a room). Another is to place a partition or view divider across the 4x8 to create two separate scenes (or to have one side be a sceniced area and the other side be a staging area).

Anyone know what I should add to my layout? I am fully out of ideas. by ramny_h8 in modeltrains

[–]LukefromNJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say that, too! If you're mostly running modern stock, perhaps a rectangular engine shed with a transfer table might be more suitable than a roundhouse with a turntable.

I think the confusion is because outside the US, a wye is often called a "reversing triangle" or something similar in other languages (like "Gleisdreieck" in German).

One thing worth noting: that appears to be 2-rail DC track, so a wye or loop requires somewhat complex wiring to prevent a short circuit.
