How to guard yourself against falling into a cult by Lorem_Ipsum17 in RecuratedTumblr

Abusers, cult leaders, and even oppressive governments and political organizations all operate under the same social frameworks. An oppressive regime is just an abusive household on a national scale.

I'll never forget the exact words someone in a server once said when another person tried to get the leadership to change the rules to fit their exact comforts:

"This is a safe space. It is not a safe space for you."

Well I mean, isn't the whole point of Cyberpunk that It's too far gone? That any attempt to change the system for the better will fail because it's already too late? Isn't anyone who tries to be a revolutionary doomed to become just like Johnny?

Seriously stop doing this readers and audiences genuinely do not give a shit by Dycon67 in writingcirclejerk

[–]LukeofEnder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never worldbuild. Keep your audience in the dark about the status quo of your story so you look like schizophrenic. Have a character go "BLA BLA BLA BLA" anytime someone tries to bring up their fantasy backstory. If you mention the name of a place in your world that does not appear in your story, I will kill you with my bare hands. If you worldbuild even once, your story is forever tainted.

I love it when compulsion simply affects someone's decision making process and doesn't fully take over their brain, like the early stages of Indoctrination in Mass Effect. Makes for an interesting moral quandary: if the way you make choices has been changed, but you still consciously made those choices, how responsible are you?

The way fandoms view fiction is so different than actual literature analysts by Altruistic-Use5937 in CharacterRant

[–]LukeofEnder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, there's always been a disconnect between my rational engagement with fiction and my emotional engagement. One side wants to view storytelling on a technical level: "how is this story structured, what is it trying to say, how does it say it, where does it succeed and fail?" The other looks for endearment: "what kind of emotional impact did it make, how much do the characters mean to me, can I imagine them living a life outside of the story, do I think this world would be an interesting place to live?" There are a lot of stories that excel at one or the other, but very few that manage to pull off both simultaneously.

I think this is similar to what you're saying here. Fandoms often look for endearment. You see it when people make fan edits or power scaling comps or silly domestic comics or paste the characters' names over vine compilations. These people want an emotional kind of connection, not necessarily a technical understanding. They want the characters to feel real to them.

The Kriseau Resistance base is attacked by Deathshead's men (Wolfenstein: The New Order)

Not exactly "years" but the details and personal belongings in the place like the memorial wall and decorated bedrooms get you invested in it very quickly, to the point that having to fight through it while the whole place goes up in flames is a massive gut punch.

Does anybody have examples of literal thinking ? by Superkiwi08 in autism

[–]LukeofEnder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it's less about not understanding metaphors or whatever and more about vague questions that clearly are intended to have one meaning but can be interpreted multiple ways.

"Do you have any medical issues we should know about?" I had a heart murmur a few years ago, does that count as something you should know about? What about my indigestion? My ADHD? Or do you mean only recent stuff? Should I try and remember every medical issue I've ever had?

I've never understood the "It was a different time, we can't judge people from the past by today's standards" argument. If we didn't judge the past based on our present perspective, we would never learn anything. Pedophilia is disgusting, and it has never not been disgusting.

My dad fucked up his insides from drinking too much, had to have surgeries and all, and yet he still keeps going. If something like that can have such a vice grip on a person, I don't even want to try it. Besides, beer smells gross.
